Re: [PHP] Mass email

2008-10-22 Thread Andrew Johnstone

Before considering outsourcing this you should consider the following.

1. Frequency of emails, I.e daily, weekly, monthly etc.
2. Hosting, are you on dedicated servers, shared hosting.
  a) do you control the domain name, enough to enable rDNS.
  b) does your hosting company restrict out going emails? I had
issues with and1 doing this

3. Do you expect to increase the number of emails being sent?

If your expecting to send out frequently, and have close control over
what each recipient is sent you will most likely have to work with an
Api or look at creating an email system yourself.

I spent a couple of days writing an email system for a client and
ourselves,

Any suggestions as to the best way to do this?

Outsource it.

Letting a third party such as AWeber[1] handle it may be your best
bet. No worries about the obvious things like code maintenance and
blacklisting, nor the minor things like ISP mail-cap limits, bad
reverse-DNS issues, and so forth.

In my experience it's easiest to outsource this once you get past a
few thousand subscribers otherwise you'll quickly discover it's not as
simple as it sounds.

There are several off-the-shelf systems, some written in PHP, but I
can only offer a review of the one that I've used. That was phplist
but for nowhere near that number of subscribers so I have no idea how
it would perform. It's definitely worth checking out: http://www.phplist.com/

I wrote up a few tips a while back which you may find useful:
http://stut.net/blog/2008/06/18/sending-email/

One of these days I'll find time to clean up and release my home-grown
solution for this, a little something I call Phostal. It's a long way
off being ready for public consumption but it regularly sends emails
to a subscriber base of over 800k users as well as several smaller
lists, automatically handles bounces, implements several unsubscribe
mechanisms and includes open tracking.

It's been on the list a few times but personally I'd check out
commercial software first, then look at doing your own. The commercial
software has done all the hard work of testing, checking duplicates,
stuff like that, no point in re-doing all of that.

I'm sure someone will suggest phplist but the interface is terrible IMO.

Yes, the phplist seriously blow. The other suggestion, aweber, sucks for
seamless integration. Their terms of usage disallow you to create a
transparent bridge to sign up users even if they opted-in already in
your own registration. You have to force them explicitly onto the aweber
site.

Cheers,
Rob.

[PHP] Mass email with php on a windows server

2005-03-04 Thread Reinhart Viane

I use a while loop and the mail function to send email to
all subscribers of a site. This works fine for 50 users but I know there can be
some problems when you do it like this for 1000 users.

Eg. Limit of page execution is exceeded and even server
crashes because each time a mail is send a socket is opened and closed again.

Now I have found some functions (fsock_open of an SMTP
service) and some pear classes

Unfortunately I have a windows server hosting that site.

Anyone knows how to do mass email on a windows server?

Thx in advance

Reinhart
