Just tried to load it up on my iPad and the load time was okay... Little slow.

But your navigation is completely non functional on my iPad... Might want to
look into that since mobile devices are becoming more and more common.

What part of the navigation doesn't work? Do the links in the content work?

I get much better datarates, around 1.5 to 2mb/s... But then again, the
server is in europe, and so am I.
But I guess a minute is OK...

Compatibility (also with non-desktop devices) will remain high on my

From what I can tell its the links on the top... The ones in the Content seem
to work but I didn't check all of them.

It won't be easy for me to debug the menu and button components (links on
the top), as I have no friends or family with an iPad i think. But i'll ask
around.

One piece of advice that I have been given is to make everything work at its
most basic structure first... Then add the fancy stuff to make it be what you
want. That way as you develop and grow with what you know you can add features
but your site will work fine without The fancy stuff.

And another thing I'll put on my to-do list is some way to detect slow
links and mobile devices, to send over much lighter artwork (no 2mb logo
when you're on a slow/metered link)..

I'm in Europe too, but your server is about 20 hops away. 470kb/s is
pretty good on my 6Mbit downstream though.

I don't like:

a) menus that just spring into life because you happen to mouse near them. You
should have to sick to activate a menu.

b) bright flashy distracting items on a website. Like the OP's menus.

I would say it depends on the situation. Forcing an extra click rather
than a mouse over (or activation by tabbing to the element) could be an
issue for some disabilities, but having said that, relying on a mouse
over only is a big no too, as there are plenty of people who are unable
to use a mouse well, if at all; we're talking old arthritic users, or
people without the use of their hands, for example.

That's why, for navigation, I'd rely on the standard links to do the
work, and then, as others have mentioned on this thread already, enhance
that with script. Add extra menus that can be triggered to show for
multiple events (hover, activation by tabbing in, etc)

Hey all,

I have been working with php for a few years but mostly simple stuff. I'm now
looking at doing some graphing but have no experience with dynamic images.

I have never used imagecreate but have seen one example of it and not sure if
it is really what i'm after.
It needs to graph changing data from a mysql db.
I also understand php might not be the best option due to the server load.

Just want to get peoples thoughts and suggestions.
Was so looking at jquery.

Looking forward your responses.

I would recommend rgraph, from one of the very good contributors to this list.
It works with canvas and has more options than you could ever need in one app.
You can get it at rgraph.net

Take a look at pChart2. It's the simplest and quickest way to generate a lot of
nice graphs. Only requires GD.

Look at the source and you can follow their syntax.

If you are looking at a js type dataviz, check out kendo-ui ( built on jquery )

If you want php based then there are tons of options (YMMV)

- phpplot
- jgraph
- etc ( a quick google will give you more)

understands what you want to learn. From the sound of things, you need to
do a lot of reading to learn the basics. Sorry I couldn't help you.

Everything that I have read online indicates that it is because

Just want to clarify something not directly related to the OP's question:

This:

153 |$csvCurrentLine = array();

Does not set a *type* for $csvCurrentLine, so if you're next line is this:

154     $csvCurrentLine = fgetcsv($csvFile, 4096, ',');

Any previous assignments are lost; the notion that presetting $csvCurrentLine to an array has no bearing when you then immediately set the same variable to something else.

The "type" $csvCurrentLine has after line 154 is entirely dependent on what fgetcsv() is returning, and nothing that happened prior to line 154.

In this case, Jay's attempt to fix the problem was simply wrong. fgetcsv may well not return an array, and the error in this code was simply that situation. If an array is not returned by fgetcsv then there was an error, hence line 155 fails every time you hit the 'EOF' condition.

After recently omitting a semicolon from the end of a statement, and having the
result be a JavaScript error in an odd place, I'm trying to pin down just what
PHP does with such errors. I made a small test script to run at CLI, which does
some echoes and then, after that, I miss out a semicolon. On the command line,
all I get is the parse error message with line number.

The script where I'd left the semicolon out of my production code is reached
via AJAX, and sends some results back. It consists of a number of functions,
then the main code appears, starting with two requires. The first such included
file has some functions, puts out a header and does an echo, and calls
set_error_handler. It's in the second included file that the semicolon is
missed off (inside yet another function).

I would have expected that the results sent back would just consist of the
Parse error: message, but for some reason the echo done in the first included
file shows up as well (this is important as it frames the parse error message
for me).

Is this the expected behaviour? The doc for set_error_handler says you can't
use it to recover from E_PARSE and the like, and the function I supply to it
doesn't appear to be called. I was just surprised that the initial echo
statement's output made it back to the JavaScript side.

(I obviously don't expect to have parse errors show up in production, but
having them nicely visible and logged during testing is useful)

This is expected. The error doesn't occur to the second file is included, so
everything in the first included file is parsed and run before execution is
halted.

Simon,

Thanks for that. Looks like I should be able to catch most places where an
error might occur.

Hello, when I pass a variable whose value originally came from $_GET
or $_REQUEST to fwrite, fwrite behaves as if it was passed an empty
string. Note that the file is successfully opened and written to by
the script, but the variable that originally came from $_GET does not
have its value interpolated in the text file, even though it does get
interpolated in the echo().

---- Code ----
<?
$meh = $_GET["q"];
$writeline = ":" . $meh . ":" . strlen($meh) . PHP_EOL;
echo ( $writeline );

$fp = fopen("/tmp/wtf.log","w+");
fwrite($fp, $writeline );
fclose($fp);

var_dump($writeline);
?>

---- Request ----

/search.php?q=meh123

---- Response --- ( expected )

:meh123:6 string(10) ":meh123:6 "

---- Contents of /tmp/wtf.log ----
::0

Some sort of security setting in php.ini maybe? If so, I'm not only
curious in how to fix it but also how this actually happens. Does the
value assigned to $writeline not get immediately evaluated? I mean,
does $writeline "know" it contains variables from elsewhere, instead
of just containing a string of chars?

Thanks!

I'm not at all sure what's going on with your code and/or site. Please look at:

 < http://mouseha.us/demos/larryproblem.txt >

To see the php code, and:

 < http://mouseha.us/demos/larryproblem.php?q=meh123 >

to see the demo.

Attachments get stripped by the list server. Stick it on an image hosting
service and send us the url instead.

Pass, not one I'm familiar with and a Google Image search for cms login doesn't
show anything similar. If I were you I'd tell him to give me access to it so I
can have a look for myself.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with PHP so doesn't really belong on this list.

Not enough for the caramilk secret!

Best just to ask for the server logins and get a look at the code

Instead of hoping for a USENET reader to recognise that screenshot, open
the login page in a web browser and view source. It's likely that there
will be a meta tag in the head that tells you what the CMS is.
