RE: [pinhole-discussion] Panorama printing question static

2002-12-31 Thread I Zarkov
Yes, using a larger format enlarger is the solution. I have been using an
Omeda D2V for years, had a mask cut at a machine shop as an insert plate for
the 4x5 negative carrier and print 3 35mm frame sequences. Works great for
sequential frames or panoramic compositions. You might try handling your
film on anti-stat mats that are grounded as are used in computer repair
situations or perhaps wiping the film with an anti-stat cloth prior to
loading into your cameras might reduce static.

God bless the master of this house and the mistress also,
And the little children that round your table grow,
The cattle in your stable, the dog by your front door,
And all that dwell within your gates, we wish you ten times more

A happy, peace-filled and productive year to all.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] digital wonderings

2002-12-10 Thread I Zarkov
Lisa has expressed exactly my apprehensions about what I read here daily
about the marriage of the digital with the pinhole. I began doing pinhole 12
years ago because I was already at that point disgusted with the critical
discourse that was then emerging as to how digital imagery would replace
film and what the inherent nature of the photographic art was, if indeed
there is such a thing as an 'inherent' nature of this process of image
making.
There seem to be multiple issues implicit within this discussion: the nature
of the recording matrix, film vs. hard drives memory sticks, the medium of
display: paper vs. cathode ray tubes; the capture device: lenses vs pinhole;
as well as ink vs light sensitive salts, photons vs 0's 1's, Pythagoreans
vs Neo-Platonists [well, maybe] alchemists vs. positivists.
While I understand entirely the allure that the digital choice offers, I've
never been able to shake the feeling that the prime reason for my doing
pinhole work was to restore the 'aura' to the photographic print that Walter
Benjamin says was lost to photography in his essay The Work of Art in the
Age of Mechanical Reproduction There is nothing about using digital media
that reinvests the print with that sense of the unique that chemical image
making allows, especially when one is involved with elaborate bleaching and
toning ‘post-processing’ of the print.
I feel that the fundamental difference between digital and wet photography
has more to do with our understanding of and complicity with time in the
art-making process more than the media of reproduction and that digital
manipulation of images further subverts a correspondence relationship
between an external world and what is presented as a photographic truth.
The conundrum to all of this discussion is that this dialogue/disagreement
would not be possible without our computers, networks, CRT’s or plasma
screens and software galore. It’s too darn hard to throw a ‘sabot’ into the
CD-ROM drive.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] Question on image circle and medium format pinhole camera design

2002-11-15 Thread I Zarkov
The recent discussion re the circle and vignetting and falloff leads me to
post this.

I have been using this camera [upload gallery
http://www.???/discussion/upload/
gallery2002.php?pic=donahoe_camera.jpg ] and others like it for about 12
years now. I wouldn't think of using anything else for doing pinhole work.
The barrel is about 6 though others I use are 4 1/2 and 3 focal lengths,
a good range of 'tele', 'normal' and 'wide' angle; no issues of falloff or
change of density as you approach the edges since only a small part of the
optical 'circle' is used. The pinholes were made by using either a #10 or
#12 sewing needle - sorry no laser drilled exactitude :-) and a tip of the
hat to Jim Shull's book too.
I began using these cameras as I am sure most people on the list have: to
get back to a simpler more direct means of making photographs. But trying to
compose on the circle rather than the rectilinear frame and anticipating
what may fall within the field of vision - how to use the near foreground
and sky - has kept me with them.
For an example of my work with this camera see the gallery at
Pinholeformat.com [http://www.pinholeformat.com/peterdgal1.html ]

Actually Steve, I thought that 'authentic space' aptly describes what
pinhole photography does best: the least-'mediated' form of optical
representation possible, the least mechanically altered form of vision
between the object and its representation.

Does anyone know of a U.S. supplier that has a copy of the Tim Rudman book

Re: [pinhole-discussion] FIlm reciprocity

2002-06-04 Thread I Zarkov
A good solution to deal with proper development after a reciprocity-adjusted
exposure is to use a compensation developer like Accufine. I expose HP5+
sheeet film and develop close to the indicated times for EI 800 and the
results are well detailed, if slightly flat negatives and print on Forte
Fortezo #3 paper or something similar.
The theory is that compensation developers exhaust themselves in the
highlights while continuing to develop up the shadow areas. I use Accufine
replenisher to keep the solution active and have been using the same
solution for almost a year now - not a bad thing when you have a well and
septic system rather than municipal water/waste systems, no spent developer
to deal with. TMax R.S. also is good in that regard, if you want the higher
contrast negatives that TMY TMX are prone to give and their lesser
reciprocity adjustments.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] used enlargers

2002-05-23 Thread I Zarkov
I agreee totally about getting an Omega D series enlarger. I've had a D2V
for about 20 years now and it's still great. Just found a point source head
for it and will be printing electron microscope negatives. Extremely
versatile assortment of heads: cold light, condenser, color fits many needs,
worth the cost. IF you want to enlarges neg to larger dimensions get the
longer column.
Always good to look locally if you can to avoid higher shipping costs. Save
the $ and invest in a good lens. Look for a package deal as the additional
parts- negative holders, lens cones, replacement condensers can get a bit
pricey if bought separately. I found it cheaper to have a machine shop cut
me neagive carriers than pay the photo-shop price.

Good luck,

Re: [pinhole-discussion] United States airline screening and film

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned using the lead shielded film bags
for airline travel. I went to France in Nov. and carried 4x5 HP5+ and TMax
100 120mm film. No hassle whatever and no ill effects to the film either
way.

Sally, if you're in France in July see the following

Re: [pinhole-discussion] pinhole is not about sharpness?

2002-05-08 Thread I Zarkov
Optical resolution is only one of many formal categories that one can have
'disagreement' over. We can prefer and promote the circular to the
rectilinear, the completely digital free to the photoshop enhanced, the
laser drilled to a #12 sewing needle or a tin can to a handsomely crafted
commercial model.
What counts most is the continuing 'discussion' going on in the WWPD
gallery. Such a global conversation. SO much good work.

Keep talking and shooting.

Re: [pinhole-discussion] reciprocity and TMY film

2002-02-27 Thread I Zarkov

Guillermo,
Your persistence is admirable.
Yes TMY does need very much less compensation than my usual HP5+ as I found
out in trying to print bullet-proof 120mm film negs. I had to develop for
the general exposures on the roll and not the 300sec. exposures done inside
an almost completely darkened medieval chapel with just a glint of light
thru narrow windows.
Thanks for the url for the chart from Kodak. As it is, I have been plotting
the curve on an excel spread sheet for TMY and playing connect the dots.
Thanks for the reminder that it is indeed a curve and not a straight line.
And cheers for that AXIS OF EVIL: Hurter and Driffield, those demons of the
d log e curve.

[pinhole-discussion] sheet film

2002-02-07 Thread I Zarkov

Sorry to join this thread so late, but I would also recommend the Doran cut film daylight developing tank. I been using them for years, just do be wary of burrs on the guide rails which can cause scratches on the film.
I use replenishment system developers [Ilford HP5+ in accufine replenishment dev. and TMY in T-Max Replenishment developer] so there is no real loss of chemistry. This is especially valuable for those of us on septic systems.
My $.02 US.
