Re: [pinhole-discussion] pinhole swap
The rules are simple, send some of your pictures to anyone on the list, hopefully someone will send some to you. The photos have to be lensless, that's all. Ellis I AGREE WITH THE SIMPLICITY OF YOUR PLAN ELLIS...MICKEY
Re: [pinhole-discussion] small apertures
John, I've been working (slowly) on my own camera as well. I've found the following page pretty helpful in creating the design I am developing: http://www.mrp at ???/ There are a number of calculators for focal length, exposure, and pinhole diameter. Hope that helps a little, Doug - Original Message - From: John Aengus Burke john_aengu...@hotmail.com To: Pinhole-Discussion@p at ??? Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2003 7:48 PM Subject: [pinhole-discussion] small apertures Hello I have recently constructed a pinhole camera from hardwood. Apart from certain teething problems I am most concerned about the fstop of my camera. In order to be able to guarnetee getting a sharp image I got a jeweller friend of mine to drill a beautiful hole in a piece of thin metal for me and the camera has an adjustable bellows to allow me get the optimium focal length by trial and error. I haven't taken it out for a trail run yet because I haven't had access to a darkroom for a while. However that aside I am worried about the size of the pinhole. My focal length is roughly 12.5cm and the pinhole is between approx.0.5 - 0.8mm from what I can tell. I am worried about diffraction and also exposure time. Now given I will be exposing onto 120 film I don't expect to be waiting all day but still I would be grateful if anybody has any suggestions. Do you think the pinhole is too small? And given its size, as it seem sto me the projected image would be extremely small on the focal plain, do you agree? John Burke, Ireland. _ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. Hi Jean, Thanks for offering to coordinate another formal swap. You did an excellent job in coordinating the formal swap that I took part in a couple of years ago. It is good that you mentioned the distinction between the formal and the holiday swaps. Some things I noticed that were different about them are: 1) the the number participants; 2) the size and quality of images; 3) level of reciprocity. I think these are inter-related. The rules for the holiday swap were that any number of people could sign up for the swap, but each individual would send cards to only as many folks at they felt they could. If I remember correctly, there were 49 folks signed up for the holiday swap last year. I know that all 49 folks didn't send out 49 images. This is OK, since it was part of the ground rules, but should be kept in mind. On the other hand, so many people signed up for the formal swaps that they were broken into two or three groups based on subject. I remember about 15 - 18 people in each group? Some folks participated in more than one. Each person committed to send a photo to ALL other participants. Jean, I know this caused you a lot of work because some folks fell way behind the deadline and needed extra reminding. However, everyone in the group I was in (the self-portrait group) did participate in the end. This was truly remarkable and joyful. I've also noticed that generally smaller images were sent in the holiday swap, Christmas card size or smaller (5x7; 4x6 and down) and many were postcards that suffered from postal handling in the winter. The formal swap images were generally larger, up to 8x10 and all were carefully packaged for mailing. I hope all this doesn't sound like sour grapes, but it is something to think about when joining the swap. Jean, please count me in on the formal swap. And, if there is a holiday swap, I'll be in that one, too! Tom Miller -Original Message- From: pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ??? [pinhole-discussion] Pinhole Swap - 2003 or 2004
Sounds like other folks want to do a swap as badly as I do Okay, let us do one. We can call it Pinhole Swap - 2003. How to do this? If anyone wants to offer suggestions other than my thoughts below, please jump right on in. For the last swap, Rob put our addresses on his website [thanks, Rob]. The directions were to pick and choose the number of people you wanted to send an image to OR send a pinhole image to everyone. Since most of us were doing cards, they were not too big. So let's decide this: 1. Do you think this can happen before the end of 2003? [That's about 75 days away] 2. If there are over 40 people who want to participate, do you want to break this up into bite sized groups of 10 to 15 per group? 3. Do you want to limit the size of the image or let the person decide for his or her self? 4. I personally would like a brief artist's statement with the images I receive, so how about that idea? 5. If Rob doesn't want to use his space for addresses again, I'll be the keeper of the addresses. No matter HOW we decide to do this, I'll start gathering the snail mail information. Those of you who want to be a part of this pinhole swap, let me have your address sent to ME off list at rosa...@pinholeday.org For a small group swap, I'll give out the addresses to the individuals in the group [anyone want to lead a specific subject group?] If you don't mind hosting a huge group address listing, Rob, then let me know and folks can put in their own information. If this is really going to happen, can we say to have answers to these questions by this coming Saturday? We can finalize the premise for this swap and move on. From oh my gosh, I can't believe I am volunteering to do this image maker, Rosanne
