[pkg-go] golang-github-libgit2-git2go REMOVED from testing

2023-09-09 Thread Debian testing watch
FYI: The status of the golang-github-libgit2-git2go source package
in Debian's testing distribution has changed.

The script that generates this mail tries to extract removal
reasons from comments in the britney hint files. Those comments
were not originally meant to be machine readable, so if the
reason for removing your package seems to be nonsense, it is
probably the reporting script that got confused. Please check the
actual hints file before you complain about meaningless removals.

[pkg-go] Bug#1050993: marked as done (podman: Podman should use overlay storage driver by default instead of vfs)

Package: podman
Version: 4.4.0+ds1-1
Severity: normal
Forwarded: https://github.com/containers/podman/issues/19811
X-Debbugs-Cc: onit...@gmail.com

The vfs storage driver in Podman has been the recommended upstream default up
until 4.4, but there isn't really a good reason to use it any more. The overlay
driver is faster and more conservative in most cases.

Please upgrade Podman to 4.5+ (4.6.3 is current) in Debian, or add the
configuration file /etc/containers/storage.conf with the following contents:

[storage]
driver = "overlay"

For reference, I ran into a serious storage explosion with the vfs driver
recently: https://github.com/containers/podman/issues/19811
This issue doesn't occur with the overlay driver.

Thanks!

Hi,

This package fails to build a source package after a successful build
(dpkg-buildpackage ; dpkg-buildpackage -S).

This is probably a clear violation of Debian Policy section 4.9 (clean target),
but this is filed as severity:minor for now, because a discussion on
debian-devel showed that we might want to revisit the requirement of a working
'clean' target.

solutions, is available at

Package: podman
Version: 4.3.1+ds1-8+b1
Severity: minor

Linux 5.13+ (so Debian stable+) added user namespace support to
overlayfs. Podman can leverage that and use overlayfs in rootless
containers, which results into performance benefits compared to
fuse-overlayfs.

See this older RedHat article for more:
https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/podman-rootless-overlay

As such, I don't think it makes sense for podman to Recommends:
fuse-overlayfs anymore. At best it should be a Suggests, if not dropped
entirely. What do you think?

Regards,
Faidon

Hello,

I am aware of #1000521, I dont see it as resolved.

The problem is that you can run podman as service, and clients
can connect on for ex. an exposed unix socket.

Practical example is:

- run rootless podman providing an unix socker
- run an container jenkins/inbound-agent container
binding that socket
- provide a binary that takes the same arguments as docker
while using the socket

Now the issue is, that you have to install podman and its many
dependencies in the jenkins/inbound-agent container.

Way better would be to use one of the simple remote-only clients,
this is a single file without any dependencies
(run ldd on both).

docker provides the docker-ce-cli package, podman the podman-remote
binary.

Debian should offer the package as independent package,
so client/server can be updated together.
Then containers can get a bind-mount to the host's
/usr/bin/podman-remote binary.

podman 4.4 introduces quadlet and with it "real" systemd style units to
manage containers. See https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/quadlet-podman

Please install the quadlet binary and the appropriate symlinks to use it
as systemd generator (see Makefile where they need to go).
