Bug#765969: [vlc] green line under some Mpeg-4 XVID videos

2014-10-19 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont

Le 2014-10-20 00:28, Francesco Muzio a écrit :

Oops, I have forgotten the screenshot

The video is really low quality so it's hard to say but we can clearly
see by zooming in that shades of grey are visible in the last lines,
even though the colour informations is discarded, resulting in a green
tint. I can't reproduce the problem with X11 or GLX, so I believe this
is a bug in your display drivers.

Bug#765969: [vlc] green line under some Mpeg-4 XVID videos

2014-10-19 Thread Francesco Muzio
The green line is visible also is visible also when the height of the
screen matches the height of the video. Hence the line is overlapped the
bottom of the screen, but don't change its colour o brightness during
the playing. (if I understand correctly your question)

The attached screenshot has been taken when VLC is playing the video
linked in my previous message.
I have tried the default output module "VDPAU", the OpenGL (XCB) and the
X11 (XCB). same result for all three.

I have also restored the options of VLC without sucessful.

Are the pixel rows at the bottom part obscuring the bottom of the picture or
are they added extraneous? If obscuring, do they lack colour or do they lack
both colour and brightness?

Which VLC video output plugin was used and does it affect others?

Just had a play on a hurd VM. Hurd doesn't define __GLIBC__ so you'll
need an extra "|| defined(__GNU__)" in your patch.

You can't do "all arches except xxx" in the architecture field, so if
you were going to do this the best you can do is:
"Architecture: linux-any kfreebsd-any".

After testing for some days, i also noticed that they tend to work
randomly. Most files show a video after start/stopping them a few
times.

Great! I will do that, and move those back to our team git!

Perhaps you are then also interested in co-maintaining Shotcut with me?

Bug#765969: [vlc] green line under some Mpeg-4 XVID videos

2014-10-19 Thread Francesco Muzio

Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~pre4-1
Severity: normal

Dear maintainers,

After the latest upgrade of VLC in testing branch I have expirienced a
problem when I playing some avi file with an XVID content.

Some video shows an horizontal green line at the bottom of the video.
The green line is seen especially if I play a fullscreen 16:9 video on a
16:10 (or 4:3, 5:4) screen.

Not all, but most videos shows this problem. I have tried VLC on i386
and amd64 machines ad the bug affect both architectures

I have found an already online video to reproduce the problem
http://thud.us/videos/misc/xvid-samples/flyby-xvid.avi

It's strange. I have tried to play sample videos attached by Sergej
Wildemann. And they sometimes work but not always. It's random. I have
attached logs for both cases.

I've never had any problem understanding the difference between
the two, thank you.

We clearly disagree on the interpretation of PROPERY_REALTIME.

For all of my plugins the following is true: if their output
is cached, or subject to significant latency, they will not
produce the expected result. Hence this must not be done,
and setting the property is required to restrict the host.

If a user expects to hear a note played on a MIDI keyboard
without delay, then this requires the entire processing
chain to do the right thing, not just the part that is
talking directly to the MIDI device. All plugins in such
a chain have the same real-time dependency. This is most
obvious for plugins that implement a synthesiser module,
e.g. a VCF, but in fact valid for almost all. Exception
would be plugin that implements e.g. a VU-meter or spectrum
analyser - it doesn't matter much if the result is displayed
with some delay (as long as that remains reasonable).

Another interpretation, closer to yours, would be that if
the plugin has REALTIME_PROPERTY set it can not be used in
any form of batch (non-real-time) processing. But that is
not what the text in ladspa.h says.

As I said, it's a bit confusing, since two rather different
properties include the word "realtime", and confusion about what the
plugin itself may do vs. what the user of the plugin (the host) may
do (and the use of the passive voice in the comments doesn't help to
clear the confusion ...)

LADSPA_PROPERTY_REALTIME indicates that the plugin itself *has* a
realtime dependency. That would be the case only for few plugins,
not really audio processing plugins, more plugins for I/O. The given
example is a MIDI device, and the restriction here is that when the
player presses say a key on a MIDI keyboard, they expect to hear the
corresponding sound promptly. So the *host* may not significantly
delay the processing, nor cache the output and play it back at a
later time. Whereas for a normal processing plugin, it may do the
processing any time it likes (if no other module in the chain has a
realtime dependency) and it may even cache the result, e.g. to
precompute a series of effects and play back the result at various
times. So this property adds restrictions to the host, and removing
it gives the host more freedom.

OTOH, LADSPA_PROPERTY_HARD_RT_CAPABLE (which you've set correctly)
indicates (among other things) that the plugin will not block and
"will take a [linear] amount of time to execute a run() or
run_adding() call". That means the host can use them in realtime
environments (e.g. JACK callbacks) that must not block and must
finish within the cycle. That's the case for most processing plugins
(unless they need a very variable processing time which cannot be
bound linearly). It would not be the case for a plugin that e.g.
needs to read data from files during run() (because reading might
block) or for I/O plugins unless they use non-blocking I/O or
similar (which they should generally do). So adding the property
gives more guarantees (and therefore more freedom) to the host.

So the upshot is that almost all pure processing plugins should set
LADSPA_PROPERTY_HARD_RT_CAPABLE, but not LADSPA_PROPERTY_REALTIME,
and indeed that's what I see is done in most plugin libraries.

See ladspa.h:

/* Property LADSPA_PROPERTY_REALTIME indicates that the plugin has a
real-time dependency (e.g. listens to a MIDI device) and so its
output must not be cached or subject to significant latency. */
#define LADSPA_PROPERTY_REALTIME0x1

So by removing this property you indicate that the plugin's output
may be cached or subject to significant latency. There will be
very few audio processing plugins for which this is true. The only
ones I could imagine would be those that only produce metering or
statistics and no audio output at all.

For all of the plugins I ever wrote the user would expect a prompt
response to control inputs and these may be bound to MIDI controllers
by the host as well. There is never any reason to add latency or
cache the output (whatever that would mean for an audio stream).

A world of exhaustive, reliable metadata would be an utopia.

and hysterically inflated market opportunities. (Cory Doctorow)
