Re: lives review

2010-01-12 Thread Harry Rickards
2010/1/12 Reinhard Tartler siret...@tauware.de:

I have some questions on the lives package:

  - it build depends on
   frei0r-plugins-dev[!kfreebsd-i386 !kfreebsd-amd64 !hurd-i386 !arm !powerpc],

However it seems to be available on arm and powerpc:

 rmadison -u qa frei0r-plugins-dev
 frei0r-plugins-dev | 1.1.22git20090409-2 |       testing | amd64, armel,
hppa, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sparc
 frei0r-plugins-dev | 1.1.22git20090409-2 |      unstable | alpha, amd64,
armel, hppa, i386, ia64, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sparc

You're right, it's available on powerpc (I've updated that on Git),
but I don't see it being available on arm.

have you tested lives on any of the excluded packages and verified
that it does work without frei0r-plugins-dev? If not, I think the
   arch restrictions can be simplified.

I've tested it builds, but not that it works. I think upstream might
have tested that LiVES (upstream not the Debian package) works without
frei0r-plugins as long as it's not built with frei0r-plugins-dev
though. I'll ask.

  - lives depends on libdirac-encoder0, and libdirac-decoder0. Should
that be pulled in automatically via shlibs?

Yeah. I've updated that in git as well.

  - it build depends on python. why? I didn't find a check in the
   configure script for that.

You're right, it shouldn't do. I've updated that in git.

  - package descriptions could be improved. typos and content-wise.

I'll fix the typos now, and the content later today. Was it just the
misspelling of originally you found?

  - it seems to be able to use cdda2wav. In debian we have a fork named
icedax. Is the current package to use icedax instead of cdda2wav?

Fixed in git.

  - what limitations does the lives package have without trancode,
mencoder and mjpegtools?  All of them are available in ubuntu but not
in debian. Perhaps these can be documented in README.Debian.

AFAIK they just allow for extra encoding options, but I'll verify that
with upstream. Once verified I'll add a README.Debian.

Thanks for your help!

I did remove frei0r-plugins-dev:

+ frei0r-plugins-dev[!kfreebsd-i386 !kfreebsd-amd64 !hurd-i386 !arm],

Moreover, we generally avoid commits that touch both debian/changelog
and other files. Instead, you might find the utility 'git-dch' very
helpful to generate entries for debian/changelog based on git commits.

Ok. Thanks for the advice. When would you advise on running git-dch?
(e.g if I'm going to make a few commits now, and then another few in

Bug#564786: VLC in etch segfaults on attempt to transcode to ogg theora format

When I attempt to transcode a video from Quicktime to OGG theora, vlc

does this also happen with non quicktime formats? I've tried with
another format with a newer vlc and I couldn't reproduce the issue. I'd
therefore assume that this defect is not present in 1.0.4-2.

Transcoding to theora in 0.8.6.h-4+lenny2 succeeds with MJPEG input
(actually I lose sound and it does segfault when done, but the
resulting theora video is fine). MJPEG is the only other (non-QT)
format I have to hand.

Command and output follow:

$ vlc -vvv -I dummy test.avi --sout
'#transcode{venc=theora,aenc=vorbis,scale=0.5,channels=2}:std{access=file,mux=ogg,dst=/tmp/lowquality.ogg}'

I think this is not enough. A short grep over the source shows that
lives searches for a binary called 'cdda2wav', so these places would
need to be replaced with 'icedax' as well.

In Debian there is still a package called 'cdda2wav' that provides a
symlink for the 'icedax' package. This is probably why this wasn't a
issue so far, but with this patch, it becomes one.

NB: I'm a bit biased about the cdrtools issue.

Hi ALSA maintainers,

I reported this bug earlier today. Basically, mplayer locks up
after some seconds of playback using the ALSA jack plugin, and
even ^C will not kill it.

After a little investigation, it looks like this is a known problem in
ALSA's jack backend. Any pointers for fixing this?

Perhaps it shouldn't be fixed, since the pulseaudio plugin takes
care of most use cases already (with pulseaudio's jack backend as an
added step of indirection). In that case, we should probably add
notices to the package description and NEWS.Debian to discourage use
of the jack plugin.

Tested with recent packages this time.

 Ideas?

Yeah, don't use mplayer with ao alsa when you really want ao jack. jackd
is for pro-audio, think of recording studios, and the alsa-jackd-bridge
is just a little hack to enable non-jackified apps to output in these
 environments.

In general, update jackd, run it with realtime prios, update the
alsa-jackd bridge or replace it by pulseaudio. (I see exactly the same
problems with the alsa-jackd bridge, that's why I switched to
 pulseaudio)

My friend has been working on getting some real-time audio processing
done, investigating various APIs for doing that. JACK looks like a
nice one. But unfortunately, if jackd is running, he could not play
movies through Flash. Adobe’s Flash plugin uses ALSA, so the
alsa-jackd bridge seemed like a natural fix.

mplayer was just a demo program to make sure the bridge was working.

Pulseaudio has plenty of advantages anyway, so I do think I’ll
switch to that.

In current Debian unstable, we have all these things, jackd operates
the pro-audio gear and pulseaudio-module-jack bridges between consumer
 apps and the pro-audio jackd.

Maybe jackd could Suggests: pulseaudio-module-jack for this. (But
if you'd like to discuss this more, we should probably take it to
pkg-multimedia-maintainers or a new bug report.)

To quote jackd author Paul Davis: jackd is not intended to be a generic
 desktop sound server.

This was clear from the home page already, but maybe the package
description should mention it too.

Thanks,
Jonathan

I think this is not enough. A short grep over the source shows that
lives searches for a binary called 'cdda2wav', so these places would
need to be replaced with 'icedax' as well.

In Debian there is still a package called 'cdda2wav' that provides a
symlink for the 'icedax' package. This is probably why this wasn't a
issue so far, but with this patch, it becomes one.

Ok. If I patch that (replacing all instances of cdda2wav with icedax)
can you think of any other problems that may occur?

I think so, yes.

NB: I'm a bit biased about the cdrtools issue.

Regarding your other email about not wishing to talk about this in
public, would you be willing to talk about it to me privately via
email if I agree to not give out any information about the problem
without discussing it with you beforehand?

probably yes. Feel free to ask specific questions privately.

Re: Releasing lives 1.1.8-2

Seeing as 1.1.8-2 contains a fix to a pretty serious bug
 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=564665) does anyone
have any issues with releasing 1.1.8-2 tomorrow after some testing?

While doing I some cosmetics on the package, I noticed
debian/removepy.diff. this is a 500kb huge patch that essentially does
some renames.

Can't this be also accomplished by some extra lines in debian/rules?
This would be more easy to adapt than updating this patch.

Btw, the same applies to some degree to cdda2wav_to_icedax.diff. I
wouldn't have touched the .po files, TBH.
