After an unknown upgrade (attempts to downgrade resulted in kwin being 
unable to be started), vlc only shows the top half of a video window when run
under KDE or xfce.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I tried removing the vdpau libraries with that changing things.

running cvlc when kdm stopped showed the entire video window.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

That seems to be a problem between QtGUI and your WM. VLC is not involved in 
painting or configuring the window decoration of its main GUI.

VLC has been doing that ever since it had PulseAudio support (provided that 
the PulseAudio plugin is installed). That never prevented falling back to 
plain ALSA.

That´s most probably got nothing to do with PulseAudio. Without logs and stack 
trace, it is just impossible to guess what went wrong.

When a program locks up, it locks up. Not much to do about it.

Chromium is dropping support for NPAPI and Firefox is to follow suit. Thus I

the NPAPI plugin when I know full well that it will stop working sooner rather

That´s only because of the package split in Debian. In particular, some of the 
LibVLC plugins that the browser plugin needs are in the "vlc" package.

There are no actual dependencies between the VLC browser plugin and the stand-
alone VLC program.


IMHO, this bug should be closed as wontfix.

When reopening a video file, the promoted feature of a message like
"Do you want to restart the playback where left off?   [Continue] X"
doesn't appear in QT4 interface.


After a search, it seems to be precisely this (resolved) bug:

Just like described in the link, opening a video through "Open file" menu will 
let that particular file to have the "Continue" message and button appearing 
every next time.


It's reproducile with a standard Jessie installation. In Debian Testing the 
feature is working. I understand that it's a minor bug, it would be nice to 
have it in Stable as well.

Are you using PulseAudio or ALSA or ... as output?
Can you please post the logs?

If PulseAudio, this might already be fixed in VLC 2.2.2.

Uhm, renaming the project is normally interpreted as a fork.

If it is not a fork but a major upgrade, I recommend you to not change 
project name but just (as you did) bump the major part of the version, 
and make a big warning in changelog and release notes that it is a major 
change.  If you want to still support older version for some time, you 
can then consider offer that in a separate branch of the git.

But it seems it is not the new version, as it does not have the symbols file.

Anyway, some more comments:

- You might want to keep the epoch so that people installing those
packages can upgrade to this version when it lands in debian.
- Please use the alioth list as the maintainer (check any other team
package [eg, csound] for the name and address). In general please read

If I understand you correctly to recommend adding an epoch to a package 
to ease transistions of *non-Debian* prior installs, then I disagree.

Please do not clutter Debian packages with info to fit unofficial 
packages or packages from derivatives.

Update devede to DevedeNG

Dear sirs:

I'm Sergio Costas, the developer of Devede.

About a year ago I updated Devede to version 4.x, and called it DevedeNG
(because it was ported to Gtk3, Python 3, and sufered a big internal
refactorization). Unfortunately, it seems that all distros still are
using the old 3.x version, which are unsuported and are producing lot of
problems to the users.

Is it possible to update the packages to the last version?

The GIT repository is at https://github.com/rastersoft/devedeng

The setup.py code is ready to generate .deb packages (in fact, I'm using
it to offer them in my homepage), so the work should be quite
straightforward.
