Sometimes it is hard to guess, why a certain modification was intoduced.
Anyway, it is not the point here. And, on the othe side, the developer which
introduces changes, may not know all the cases, where certain functions are
used (like in this case). Therefore, we must discuss it.
Ii have noticed, that after recent modifications i rc-scripts, some services
do not start any more. My example was mldonkey, in which the original line
starting the service was:
daemon --fork --user $USER "cd ~$USER && exec $MLDONKEY_PATH >
${LOG:-/dev/null} 2>&1"
The "cd..." part should be easy to fix since now we have the --chdir parameter
to the daemon call. "Should be" but is not, for the daemon function does not
properly expand exprssions like ~mldonkey (by default, it is
/home/services/mldonkey). But - OK, I can put the whole path by hand.
The most important problem here is the "exec" part in the command. And it
cannot be fixed just like this, for exec is a shell command. Unfortunately,
mlnetd has no switch, which makes it fork into background (it was removed for
some reasons). And therefore the script hangs here. It's probably the same in
other cases reported today (svscan from daemontools and git-daemon from git-
core-daemon-standalone).

I agree, that in some cases SysVInit is needed. I need it. Therefore I'm
trying to find out, why some things stopped working. But I don't want to start
fixing things if I don't understand the reasons, for which some changes were
made (for "fixing" may turn into "spoiling").

Chromum-browser 30.0.1599.101-1 doesn't want to start

I've added -disable-setuid-sandbox to my Chromium Flags file in config directory, but it s just a workaround (yes, I know that this is from the TH/test, but someone has to test all of it). i noticed too, that on some older amd64 machine with nvidia-legacy3
video driver i can not run any 27.x series.
In my case, it was on i686 with nvidia driver (latest). But I've experienced
the same behavior with 27.0.1453.93-1 on my laptop with intel graphics.
for me it looked that it just stopped, even the usual dbus error about
org.chromium.Mtpd did not appear.
i don't recall it crashing there, but i did not check either.
It did not crash ina visible way. Only processes stopped working becouse
they were waiting for messages from another (sandbox), which has died - ps
reported chromium-sandbox defunct, strace shown that one of the forked
processes was trying to receive a message using msgrecv.
OK. So I'm staying with 24.* and waiting for the better version :-)

What's the matter with the current chromium-browser?
I cannot run the last 2 versions (27.0.1453.{93,110}-1). Both behave in the
same way - one of the subprocesses dies somewhere in the meantime, while
others do not notice it and wait forever for response (msgrecv(), in strace).
Furthermore, in dmesg I can find general protection errors:

Also versions higher than 24.0.1312.56-1 cannot login to my Chrome account
(26.0.1410.63-1 works, but reports problems with logging into google account
and advices to reauthenticate, but then it is exactly the same). Only the
already mentioned old version 24.0.1312.56-1 works fine for me.
I have i686 architecture, fresh packages from Th+ready+test.
What else can I check to make chromium run properly?

But before you do that, one question - do you have /dev/console,
/dev/null and /dev/zero on this filesystem? Normal nodes, directly on
fs. See recent thread about new install for gory details.
OK. Solved. I had udev_root=/dev/ defined in my udev.conf (from the
ancient times) an that caused this problem. Now it's clean.
And - yes, I have static /dev/{console,null,zero} in my system (even without
udev).

Which direction do I need to go to work around whatever bug (timing?) is being triggered here? Do I need use nvidia drivers directly from the binary install packages rather than PLD's compiled ones? Do I need a different kernel or older glibc for now? I can't make out which piece is even broken so I don't know if this is a glibc bug or an nvidia nightmare or a PLD compile issue. I have reported this problem long time ago on a polish devel list. There was no solution given (only we must wait for the next nvidia release) and I've switched to nv. Then pluto suggested to try: valgrind --tool=helgrind glxinfo but I had no time to try this.
