[PLUG] Google Datacenter Positions open in The Dalles

2009-12-29 Thread John pdx
I'm not sure if it is appropriate to post this here or not, but given the
current job shortages and that this is linux related I thought I would throw
it on the list.

http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?answer=171451

The temp to hire is normal, everyone here went through it.

The posting pertains to OTA positions available but they are looking for a
OT2 aswell, which is a more technical (linux/scripting/hardware) position,
it's just not posted.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have and no I am not a recruiter,
I am long time lurker and technician at the DC :)

John

I'm trying to create a new kernel to boot from.  The old kernel has ACPI
support and it is locking up on boot.  I'm trying to compile a 2.6.27.39
kernel and the bzImage file is too big.  I need it to be 1.4 megs or
smaller where I'm 200k too big.  Is there any way around this limitation
 that etherboot seems to impose?

There is a section in the general to build for memory limited systems. This
should cut down on the size.

If you are doing nfsroot you could also boot this off the network.

[PLUG] Fan probs on Thinkpad T60?

2009-12-29 Thread Mike Connors
I've read some threads on this, but just wondering if anyone locally has
run into any of these problems?

1. Fan continuously runs
- I did download some ibm-acpi fan util, but the fan continues to
run all the time.

2. The fan has become annoyingly loud.
- Has anyone replaced the fan or taken apart the laptop to clean it
out, etc?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't know, has anyone? ;)

Ok, more seriously, from a small sample of laptop repairs of various
makes I have to give IBM/Lenovo mad props for freakin' awesome repair
manuals available to everyone. Give it a search and you should easily
find it online.

Good luck!

[PLUG] Alsa problems...

2009-12-29 Thread Michael Robinson
I can't select my sound card in alsaconf because alsaconf doesn't
list it even though I know I have a module for it.

I have a DR sound ISA sound card or I guess an OPTi931 sound card.

ad...@condor:~$ ls alsa/
alsa-driver-1.0.9rc4a/ alsa-lib-1.0.9rc4.tar.bz2
alsa-driver-1.0.9rc4a.tar.bz2 alsa-utils-1.0.9rc4a/
alsa-lib-1.0.9rc4/ alsa-utils-1.0.9rc4a.tar.bz2

As you can see, I grabbed recent source code for ALSA.

I'm running a 2.6.10 kernel, have to because later kernels
don't work with my Quickcam color camera, the cheap one.

(CONFIGURE OPT0931/-1 (LD 0

As you can, the above piece of my isapnp.conf file suggests that
the card is an OPTi931 as well.

Is the driver for this sound card simply not functional or is there
a trick to get alsaconf to try it?

I'm also having trouble with alsamixer not working as the following
shows:

ad...@condor:~$ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
ad...@condor:~$

I have another similar computer that sports Monorail 3D audio which also
identifies as an OPTi931.
