Re: [PLUG] Lenovo laptop [UPDATE]

My X13-1 thinkpad with Ryzen 7 4750U has not crashed in the year I have it
either. I suspend it a lot, have run out battery a few times, rarely reboot
post update

When it was new, it needed newer kernel than in Ubuntu 20.04 at the time
though. One of the point releases upgraded the kernel a few months into it.

I changed ssd/nvme to lower power one, and all hw works from the start
including finger print reader. And I get bios updates through standard
fwupdmgr.

I hope it helps someone,

Ben,

My Ryzen 7/2700 desktop has not crashed; the last reboot (user error, not
hardware) was 121 days ago.

Formally only thinkpad line is supports linux and allows hw upgrades. I am
not sure if that excludes customer electronics models such as idea pad.
There are rumors, not sure if true - I have exclusively enterprise thinkpad
experience, that upgrades may be somewhat restricted in bios for
non-enterprise models.

You can verify the ssd, by putting back the original and installing to
that. Also, new HW requires new kernel, some times bleeding edge. It is
little painful for updates, but reasonably easy to use current kernel in
the likes of Ubuntu and/or Fedora. I cannot recommend openSuse for new HW
with bleeding edge kernel.

That's all I can say from my experience.

The primary problems tend to be closed hardware with no open-source
drivers, and for a laptop that often manifests as Broadcom wifi
radios. If you can make sure that the laptop does not come with a
Broadcom wifi (and maybe Nvidia graphics), the likelihood is that you
won't have trouble.

Then there is the question of whether you are paying the microsoft
tax. My initial reading about the frame.work laptop shows it ships
with Windows, whether you use it or not.

Randy,

The newer hardware is the issue.

fwiw, i would be deeply shocked if a modern lenovo did not run linux.
you might need ubu as opposed to deb, because of lagging drivers.

Bruce,

Thanks for sharing your experiences. There are series newer than the T and X
and I cannot find linux compatability information for them. Since I have not
been traveling on business (local or distant) I've really no reason to
replace the Dell Latitude E5410 or Lenovo X-200, so despite low prices on
some newer portables I'll stick with what I have until they unrepairably
quit.

Stay well,

Newegg's chat person could not find an answer to my question and Lenovo
doesn't have a chat service and every attempt to contact them via
their web

site requires a product serial number.

I don't follow hardware for linux and cannot find whether this laptop
supports the OS so I guess I'll not upgrade my old Dell.

Which boards are they?

I have some older Soekris 48xx boards, and some PC Engines Alix. The
Alix are probably still useful to Personal Telco.
