Relax. I was referencing a science fiction novel in response to the fact that
Richard appeared to get my reference. The message wasn't even intended for you
in the first place.

I will restate my original point in plain english.

The initial email in this thread is not well formed. The user *appears* to be
asking a question, but does so in a way that makes it difficult for us to
understand exactly what he wants to know. This results in people providing
answers to different questions.

Make sense?

Many of your answers are too elaborate to be comprehended by average human.
Especially those of us with strongly developed selective hearing/reading
skills.

See if you can focus longer:

The point is the question and the answer should fit these realities.
If the do not, than one is probably wasting time asking or answering.

Regardless of it's age it conveys a point that is very relevant to your
"question".

A technologically advanced society built a supercomputer to answer the ultimate
question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. A question so broad in scope
that even the most power AI ever built needed to spend millions of years
processing all variables.

In the end, it determined that "42" was the answer to the question the people
asked. There was just one small problem

"Life, The Universe, and Everything" is not a question. It's not even a well
formed sentence. It's just 3 abstract concepts placed next to each other with
no purpose or direction. The Ultimate Answer made no sense because the Ultimate
Question didn't make any sense.

With that in mind I go back to your original "question" in this email thread...
You have expressed an interest in making sure that your questions are responded
to with functional and/or useful answers and yet I can't seem to find a
meaningful question anywhere in your email. How will you understand my answer
if you never understood the question?

After spending some time researching your question, I have determined that the
answer is 42.

Ben,

That's a given since 42 is the answer to everything in the Universe.

My primary suggestion is to say: "this is my problem and these are my
constraints" rather than "tell me how to execute my half-assed
solution"

Understand that a work-free or easy solution might not exist or might
not be known by the people you are asking. Understand that all
suggestions are offered in good faith, and will help you explore the
solution space. Some of them are things you've already thought of and
others might be novel to you. We have no way of knowing for sure which
is which. It is up to you to pick the direction to try and then to
execute that attempt, and you might pick the wrong one. Also,
generally, when people ask questions about your question or about the
context of your question, do your best to answer them. There is
nothing quite so demotivating as trying to help someone, but doing so
in the dark without effective feedback, for example: Suggestion, "try
A". Response: "I tried B and IT DID NOT WORK", where A and B are
non-intersecting. Try to say *how* it didn't work, and also, *TRY A*
and say what happened.

A lot of your questions, to the degree I have engaged with them, are
often along the lines of: "I am not so convinced this 21st Century was
such a good idea, I want to solve this problem with 1960s technology."
Understand that a lot of us have moved on to at least the 1990s.

Regards,

Russell

Get the idea I've been around a while.

The essays on "How to ask a question" focus on "defining the question".

I'm more interested in triggering functional/useful responses.
