The second implied that I'm a dummy for not using ctrl-x which the writer reminded me dates back to WordStar days. Of course, ctrl-x cuts highlighted text and does not delete the un-highlighted next character to the right. Rather amazing that there is apparently no way to mimic the Del key action using ctrl-d.
