Re: Slack for PLUG

2020-01-03 Thread Donald Mac McCarthy
I know slack is not F/OSS, but it is nearly ubiquitous. Many of my
clients use it and as such, I use it to communicate with their team as
well. As much as I hate to admit it, I have 9 slacks open right now. It
can sometimes seem like too much, but it is nice to be able to check
messages in one interface and not 20.

https://slack.com/pricing

The users are not limited in the slack free plan, but it only stores the
last 10k messages. I believe the non-profit license comes with some
support which is why it gets limited. None of the data is stored
encrypted, although the client does use TLS for transport to and from
the server.

I would prefer that everyone use IRC or jabber since you can tie those
into the same client and even use PKI over jabber, but alas, they don't.
Slack is the new way of the world for the time being.

It could also help grow and expand the group by making it more
accessible to those who are not "if it isn't IRC or ICQ, get of my lawn"
type folks.

I would toss my vote for slack for none other than how I have seen it
help other users' groups grow.

Someday - I'll jump on the freenode IRC - I just have to remember which
server and which screen my irssi client live on.

Re: Slack for PLUG

2020-01-03 Thread Jill Rouleau
https://www.irccloud.com/

It's a cloud-based irc client/bouncer with a modern web UI and mobile apps. (A
bouncer is like an irc connection proxy that stores channel and chat logs for
you when your client isn't connected.) For folks who don't want to or can't run
their own bouncer or just want an easier interface to irc it's a really great
option. So if you like things like Slack because they're more user-friendly
this is a good client-based alternative that won't lock you into a proprietary
chat solution. This is usually my go-to client for introducing new f/oss
contributors to irc and I'd definitely feature it prominently in any intro to
irc talk.

Re: Slack for PLUG

2020-01-03 Thread Thomas Scott
I also vote for Slack - I love having things self hosted (as i type this
ironically in gmail), but having too many "app(s) [services] for that" also
clashes with my ability to practice the Unix philosophy of "do one thing
well".

I still use google-voice for sms as well. Until mint was definitively the
cheapest pre-purchased mobile service, I could hop whenever it was cheaper
to a new data plan (provider agnostic) and keep my number without any
porting hassles. I also use it to avoid picking up my phone using my
browsers single website mode, coincidentally my texts get a little long
winded .

Existing: Three node mesh VPN between three locations. Been in-place since
2012. Recently upgraded VPN devices (Linksys LRT-224's) as a part of the next
step. However, the VPN device at one node is not the default gateway for that
LAN segment - the old device is as it is bound to a public IP address that the
customer's customers access by IP address and not name. Added static routes to
LAN devices to route traffic to the other two nodes via the VPN device. This
has been working since September. This doesn't mean we can't reconfigure if we
have to.

Next Step: Customer wants two ISP connections using different media. Old ISP
is Cox Business. New ISP is CenturyLink. Have installed new devices at office
and data center and created second VPN tunnel between these two nodes. Unable
to get traffic to reliably use second VPN. I can get the traffic to go down
the CenturyLink VPN, but only by configuring the CenturyLink devices with the
same IP addresses as the Cox devices. This is OK for an emergency, but not the
desired end result.

Final step: Get traffic to fail-over from one tunnel to the other when the
primary VPN fails. Cox has already notified customer that the cable needs to
be replaced and there will be several days of downtime, so this is a certainty.

Lots more details to share. Need to show topology. If you're with me at this point,
saying "Uh-huh, George, easy stuff" then please email me. I'm willing to pay,
so this will get you some fine craft beer, not that free beer. I anticipate a
preliminary meeting to discuss requirements, then some on-site working sessions.

Re: Slack for PLUG

I've had so many services over the past 25 years or so, at this point I
don't do any more than I have to. I like slack because it's business
partners and customers mostly so professional, and it's pretty universal.
I ran discord for a bit last year for a game I was playing, but that's
about it. I still use gvoice/hangouts for all my sms, signal atop that,
and that's about it.

As Hans said, Plug does have IRC, but of all things IRC is one thing I've
never gotten into using after all these years, or more never had a reason
to continue using. Perhaps less is more and should though.
