Re: Google drive chromebook

2018-09-09 Thread Carl Parrish
I have a Google Pixel Book 2. While I do still carry my MBP around with me
I find I increasingly don't need it. The cloud 9 IDE (
https://aws.amazon.com/cloud9/?p=tile) is pretty good. If you work with VS
Code https://stackblitz.com/ is very close to being all you need. I prefer
Webstorm myself and now can run the Linux version natively on my
pixelbook before I could with Cruton -
https://www.linux.com/learn/how-easily-install-Ubuntu-Chromebook-crouton%20 -
but as long as I have an internet connection and can access AWS or ssh into
my servers there is nothing stopping me from getting real work done from my
Chromebook. I have 64 gb of hard drive space I think if I was going to do
it again I would upgrade to the 128 GB (now that I can run docker on my
Chromebook a bit of hard drive space is nice) but with 3 TB of cloud space
(I think that came with 3 years through Google) I'm not hurting with it as
a laptop at all.

Re: PFA: home computers have no "reasonable expectation of privacy"

2016-07-12 Thread Carl Parrish
Anyone have sources on hardening a pixel? Can you auto encrypt data on Google’s
cloud? is it easy to make S3 a default drive? Have we ever done a workshop
about using Crouton or chrubuntu on a pixel? Since about 85% of all I do is web
work or ssh into a Linux server I really think I can get away with one now as
long as 1) no issues access my git remote server / Heroku / Digital Ocean /
Engine Yard 2) I can run atom / phpStorm / rubymine in the ubuntu area. If I
can verify these things I’m planning on purchasing end of this week. But would
love to find a USB-C storage drive to connect to it and perhaps encrypting it
for any private data.

Re: replacement computer - Yarnell

2013-07-10 Thread Carl Parrish
I feel like we have this conversation often. Perhaps it should be a FAQ. I
still recommend jungle disk for offsite Linux storage. I know there are a few
cheaper options now but I haven't tried them so can't recommend them. I like
how with Jungle Disk I can encrypt with my own key and it works well regardless
of if I'm on Linux, Mac or (well actually I'm *never* on Windows now a days).

Here's something that just occurred to me. I used to know a guy in
Wickenburg who was responsible for the backups where he worked. He told me
that once a week when he came to work, he would take the last set of backups
to the bank where he put them in the firm's safe deposit box. He would bring
the tapes that were in the box back to the office where they would be used
 for the next backup.

I checked with my local bank and found a box big enough to accept a hard
drive would cost $24 a year. I don't recall whether or not Yarnell has a
bank. If it doesn't, a trip to Wickenburg wouldn't take too long. If your
home were to be threatened by fire, your data would be safe. Of course be
sure to encrypt anything you put on that drive.

If you can afford three drives, put a copy of the backup on two, then take
one to the bank. The next time you do a backup, make sure it's on both
drives at home and take one to the bank and leave it there. Also bring home
the one that was there. This way you always have a copy of the most recent
 backup at home.

You can always sign up for one of those online backup services if one will
support linux, but you may need several days to do the first backup. After
that, they only back up what has changed.

Does anyone know if any of those online backup servies that advertize on the
 radio will work with linux?

 Thanks
 Derek

Thanks for the input, I knew the list would be helpful and thoughtful.
So I am revising my chromebook desire since the coverage up there is pretty
 spotty to say the least.
I am thinking I'll get at least one desktop, and one laptop. but may get a
second laptop or the cool looking zo-tac with xbmc.

Thanks der.hans and Joseph; Michael, Carl, Matt, Stephen et al. for the
 thoughtful answers.
I can put this one on the back burner now for a few months til something is
 up there to live in.

Re: Yarnell fire and new computer

2013-07-07 Thread Carl Parrish
I have a few (non technical) friends who have chrome books and *love* them.
I've been thinking of getting a Pixel to replace my MacBookPro in about a year
(hopefully the 2nd Gen Pixels will be out by then). But I have noticed a few
things that you'll want to be sure of before you go with a chromebook. First of
all make sure your printer is cloud ready or at least wirelessly accessible. if
so your chrome book will work with it like magic otherwise it can be a lot of
work to get them to work together. While you can work offline on a chromebook,
my understanding is that you have to download several apps to make them work
that way so you'll want high speed internet access at least for configuring.
Finally there isn't a lot of storage space on the chrome books themselves as
they expect to be able to access the cloud. I have two 2 terabyte hard drives
that are intranet aware so I doubt this would be an issue for me. But something
to keep in mind.

 Hi all;
(I used to be the lady that was 'nice penguin @ webcanine dot com' but had to
change my email so now I have this one.)
We lost our house in Yarnell to the fire last weekend and are staying in
Phoenix. But you guys have always been good for information on computer stuff
in general, so i thought i'd ask here first.

We have good insurance, and it is going to cover replacement cost for our
computers up there. They were old, pentium III's that i had put ubuntu on and
were great desktops. but i am thinking that since we don't do a lot of
computer intense work up there, just surf online and read emails, that maybe
it would be better to just get laptops. Then i was thinking maybe of getting
a chromebook instead of a 'regular' laptop; but my son said that those are
 all 'cloud ' based.

But does that mean that they have no functionality if we're not online?

 What do you guys think?
I have time, since it's going to take about 4 months to get a new
 manufactured home up there :(

also, OT, i did just finish an html class and made my final project a few
webpages with photos of the place and the fire stuff. of course, we haven't
been allowed back up there but we're hoping for early this week.

 well, thanks for any ideas.

Re: Suggestions for a reliable Cloud backup solution

2013-02-20 Thread Carl Parrish
I sort of remember saying this before but I don't see it in the thread. Jungle
Disk (https://www.jungledisk.com/) is cheap and easy. Works on all platforms
and is very reliable. (haven't used crash plan so Can't compare but I've been
using jungle disk for at *least* 5 years with no complaints. )

plunking down my CC. Seems many folks are NOT happy campers over at JC land.
With that exception, and it s a big one when you can't get your stuff that

So, I'm sure someone here has a good solution. One they use either
professionally or privately where they have actually had to get files back
from the cloud and were able to.

 SO... thoughts?
