moin moin,

tomorrow's Installfest will happen. Sorry about the incorrect post this
morning indicating a cancellation. This month's Installfest has NOT been
cancelled. This month's Installfest will be taking place tomorrow.

Alexander will be there.

We also have several people who've registered they'll be there for help.

One has an old laptop and needs help getting GNU/Linux installed. We
probably need the xubuntu alternate CD based on the specs for his machine,
but we might get lucky and be able to do a USB drive install.

Another person will have a *NIX box with samba and an m$ box and needs to
get filesharing working.

10:00 to 16:00 at UAT on Saturday the 27th.

Thanks to those of you who will be there to help!

ciao,

What part of "fully functional" did you assume wasn't referring to
enterprise class applications? Performance even feels faster than Sun's
implementation, and it's lacking very few features from the closed java.

OpenJDK is going to be released as Java7 eventually, so of course it is
designed to be just as solid.

2009-06-26 Thread Lisa Kachold

Match.com Lawsuit Update, And Thoughts

Norah hart lawyer OPW -- June 22 -- OPW had a chat with Norah Hart,
the attorney representing Sean McGinn, the 'cuddly but toned' man who
filed a recent lawsuit against Match.com. This is the lawsuit that
says Match.com misleads consumers about potential matches with
inactive members. It is Hart’s assertion that “Match defrauds the
consumer of their time and personal investment every time a person
pays Match’s subscription fee and writes to a member who won’t have
the ability to read what they wrote or see their profile.”

The one main thing that they seem to be pinning the case on is the
fact that when you look at a profile, you cannot tell if a person is a
subscriber or a free member. You also cannot tell how long its been
since they’ve logged onto the site beyond three weeks. It is this
practice that they want to go after Match.com for. Should they win,
this would have a significant impact on every dating site that doesn’t
list subscriber status or caps activity reporting on their members at
three weeks or so.

Norah Hart contends that, “When a subscriber cancels their
subscription, their profile continues to appear to be that of an
active subscriber. Nothing indicates to the viewer their limited
access to read e-mails or respond to them.”

The problem with this argument is that just because someone cancels
their paid subscription to a site, it does not mean that they are
canceling their membership. They might be paring back their
involvement in the site because they are evaluating a new
relationship. They may just be taking a month off the subscription
because they want to save money. It also does not take into account
winking, which is a free feature on Match for all members, regardless
of paid status.

Internet dating is like fishing. Those with paid memberships just
cast out further and more frequently. Those with idle unpaid
memberships are waiting for the big fish. The question is, should the
dating site identify the pro fishermen from the amateurs? I think the
amateur fisherman would rather keep their hooks in the water. The
fish, meanwhile, would want to see when someone last logged in. That's
the best indicator of activity and the potential to respond. Still, is
3 weeks long enough? How about 3 months? Anyone who hasn't been
active in 3 months would be very unlikely to respond.

Hart goes on to contend that her client is, “The perfect example of a
man who is really attractive, extremely eligible and gainfully
employed. He’s writing to people and hears nothing back from them. Is
that because they’re not interested? That’s highly unlikely.”

What she isn’t taking into account is that there could be numerous
factors contributing to his failure on the dating site. His photo,
profile, what he says in his emails, and even his dating strategy
could be letting him down.

As Hart is seeking a Jury trial, it will all come down to what the
people decide and how strong Sean McGinn’s claims of anguish can sway
them. Of course, the argument may be diluted by the fact that he did
eventually find his girlfriend on match.com according to a recent
report on Fox News.

OT: Client Needs Help

2009-06-26 Thread Eric Cope
Hello all,
I have a client that is having a system issue. When they turn on their
computer, it says, "insert system disc". I can't help them until the middle
of next week and they need their computer sooner than that. They are located
at 31st ave and Thomas. If anyone is interested in providing them support,
please let me know, preferably by phone (602-568-2095) and I will provide
you their phone number. This is a paying gig.

Thank you.

2009-06-26 Thread Lisa Kachold
Match responds with two "support" attempts, but of course the original
screenshot graphic, if actually READ by a competent person would tell
the tale instantly.

Description:
Entered on 06/26/2009 at 07:49:23 by Winifer C.:
Dear Member,

Thank you for contacting Match.com regarding anonymous emailing.

Match.com preserves your privacy by directing your emails through our
double-blind system. Our exclusive technology strips your real email
address and replaces it with your username and the talkmatch domain
(usern...@talkmatch.com). Then the system forwards your messages to
the members you're emailing.

One way to contact members is by clicking the Email Him/Her link in
their profiles.

You can also send email messages from your personal registered email
account to members with whom you have previously corresponded through
the Match.com site. Once logged into your personal email account
(i.e., hotmail, yahoo, etc.), please follow these steps:

1. Compose a new message
2. In the "To" field, type the member's username and add
@talkmatch.com (i.e., jane...@talkmatch.com)
3. Send the message

Before sending the email, please review the following tips protect your privacy:
* Remove any mention of your email address from the body of your message.
* Remove any automatic signature at the end of your email.
* Do not use Cc: or Bcc:
* Note that our double-blind email system strips away your personal
email address and it will NOT appear in the “From” line.

For immediate answers to most common questions, please visit our help
section at: http://www.match.com/matchus/help/helpdtl.aspx?sec=42&lid=108.

For any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us. We
wish you the best of luck in finding your match!

Re: Fedora 11 IcedTea/ javaws errors

2009-06-26 Thread Shawn Badger
I'm trying to run the CommVault "Galaxy Commcell Console" under Fedora 11,
it worked in the beta version but not in the release version under openjdk.
That is just on of the "enterprise" apps that doesn't work.

It sure would Craig, but I reckon you have far more time to discuss
these points than me. :)

I think that would depend upon what one calls serious server-side
'enterprise' applications.

Out of the box, RHEL supports open-jdk and runs tomcat5 with it. It
seems easy enough to switch it to Sun's jdk.

They also have a deal with Sun and Sun's version of java is included on
the group of disks. I would suspect that someone who is running "serious
server-side 'enterprise' applications" is more likely to run a supported
OS with Sun's version of java because it is supported.

Thats good to hear. Im more interested to know if anyone has run
any serious server-side 'enterprise' applications on it. but, Thanks
for the info! -jmz
