I have an 80gb PATA disk and I see sdX, I believe newer distro
versions use some libata stack which made the change in naming...

I wonder what is the major/minor device number. IIRC that is what
really makes the difference.

Anyways. Sorry to all for little misunderstanding.

time it shows no device found '/dev/root'.
root can not be mount stops.

At boot time, I boot Fedora giving same commands to grub and it starts.
Please Note, No changes in commands as they are given in boot.

please suggest where do I need to change?

2008-02-19 Thread pankaj patil

Have you tried modifying /boot/grub/menu.lst to do permanent change of Grub
 boot line?

I did that no change.

 OR
You have to find which is your mount point e.g. /dev/hda1 is your /
 partition
then create a symbolic link as below
 ln -s /dev/hda1 /dev/root

try this may this will help you

True... but incase you need to work on disk hda1 and by mistake type
sda1, you are re-directed to a different disk in the system or an error
message will be displayed to you!

so the s or h does make a difference!

post the relevant lines from your /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

Also, as someone pointed out, FC9 is still in alpha stage. It could
well be a distro problem.

Why not try FC8?

[PLUG] grub-install error

2008-02-19 Thread Ranjit Bhonsle
Hello all,
I had to reinstall WinXP due to software problem.
After install I tried to reinstall grub to mbr.
While mounting to /mnt/sysimage it says
error occured only part of system mounted.
I cannot find /sbin/grub-install.
Only method of repair I know of would be
upgrade reinstall but all installed progs
and customisations would go me guess.
Another thing is I have Suse10.3 also
installed but I don't like its grub, maybe
I can try grub install from there.
I am not very comfortable with Suse though.
suggestions would be welcome.
regards,
Ranjit.
