And sorry other PLUG members for the spam below: The email was sent directly to you and not on the PLUG list. I joined the list, so that I can continue learning what is happening in PLUG, even if I am unable to attend the PLUG meetings. And anything which doesn't talk about PLUG on PLUG mailing list is a spam for me. Correct me if I am wrong. In one of the earlier emails, when Arun Bhat asked permission to attend the meeting, and Manjusha replied it is open to all, I think everybody got her point. I personally don't think it was necessary to give english gyan to all the people in PLUG mailing list. At least, IMO, that's spam! Reporting successful upgrade following these steps (eating my own manfood for the list) There were couple of places where I felt that these instructions could be better... I followed command line and for some reason GUI kicked me out after about 10 minutes... when I did CTL-ALT-F1 it was showing something like restarting initrd (or something similar ...) that I have forgotten to note down. So I rebooted shorting after starting the upgrade process. (I basically switched the computer on-off 4 times (for my own reasons that it traveled with me) and completed the process.) To ensure no (or minimal) hiccups from the second boot (first reboot after upgrade started), i entered linux single user mode and run init 3 There by reducing the (imaginary) problems of unbalanced update... {This was done after noticing a problem of new kernel and old modules not working together in the upgrade process. So I rebooted the old kernel and went ahead as reported above.} I think kernel should have been upgraded way later in the process which is not the case (may be I am not technically qualified to make such a statement but hey, I am the sufferer :-) Overall these instructions helped a lot in understanding and planning the complete upgrade process. [PLUG] BIOS update under Linux...
Over the last weekend i was trying to update bios of IBM Thinkpad R52 (that originally has Windows XP license which I erased and installed Mandriva 2010 :-) http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade was very helpful in understanding this difficult issue. The only way for me now to update bios was take help of GRUB :-) Which turned out to be a great educational exercise on grub for me as I was completely oblivious to it and it's issues... till now. (Luckily :-) I had EXT4 on that laptop which made my life even more fun... After spending about a day I could manage to load run the .IMG file of new bios but despite that could not update the bios. With a tonnes of worries and a pinch of salt I had to switch off (a well advised NO NO) the PC since no activity happened for 15 minutes even after navigating inside the bios update program and hitting the final ENTER DO NOT SWITCH OFF button. Beware, those who have dealt with bios update may have horror stories to tell! however from the same piece of software I could later try the third option. { Option 1. Read the documetation Option 2. Update BIOS Option 3. Update model no. etc. } upon executing it the machine would promptly switch off correctly. To make the long story short has anybody recently or in the past updated the IBM R52 bios this way under Linux... Because else I am left with no option but to reload windows on it just to upgrade bios... :-( The Silver lining is Mandriva 2010 Grub as boot loader worked well with EXT4 against some reported issues elsewhere with other distros. Any suggestions are welcome on subject of updating IBM bios using GRUB. The similar documentation of using LILO for the same purpose would add more meat to the Linux Documentation Project :-) -- The bottomine: Machine still boot and runs Mandriva 2010, though the same behaviour is not guaranteed anywhere ___ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List

This mail is to share of my few thoughts... so if you can easily get bored by somebody else's thoughts kindly disregard... else feel free to cross-criticize and share your thoughts if applicable! So far in the past I have done full version upgrade of Mandriva (more than twice) and have clean installed openSUSE, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Mandriva on more than one occasions. So never had a chance to really witness the process of major version upgrade, e.g. from kubuntu 9.10 to kubuntu 10.4 (which I am doing right now), for any other distro. On couple of occasions I tried to shift distros and found few problem with openSUSE at the time which I reported. This entire perspective with new insights make me feel that Mandriva has still few more places where it can improve. One such example is, let say I have 3 network interfaces on my lappy and i am downloading from the best connection, suddenly the best connection is broken, then if I am right Mandriva will not renegotiate the new route to its download repository while as I see kbuntu does this... I find that openSUSE is very good in restarting from last known upgrade point (sudden power outage with no UPS backup to installation machine) which probably others are not easily able to. I see that major version upgrade process of kubuntu looks cleaner than Mandriva although I am yet to complete it fully for the first time. However for sure, Default KDE Mandriva theme is more intuitive for *the initiated as well as uninitiated* Linux User. ___ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List

If auto_da_alloc is enabled, ext4 will detect the replace-via-rename and replace-via-truncate patterns and force that any delayed allocation blocks are allocated such that at the next journal commit, in the default data=ordered mode, the data blocks of the new file are forced to disk before the rename() operation is committed. This provides roughly the same level of guarantees as ext3, and avoids the zero-length problem that can happen when a system crashes before the delayed allocation blocks are forced to disk. -- १.
