Let us disect the problem as if we are solving some code (may be a psedo code)
and help all understand if there is actually a problem, and if so where that
could be...

Observations:
1. Darth did not suggest kill filters, he just advised to use filters.
2. Arun added the work kill, as his own work of art.
3. Arun Khan email id is knura9.
4. महासागर's email if o.s.h.o
5. In o.s.h.o, the first and forth characters are same.
6. In arun Khan's email id, last character is 9 while his email ID is a crypt
of his own name.

7. Whos is fault for issuing the word KILL? This is not an answer, but a
question based on all the observation one to six...!!!

8. And there could be more of such which others can see by careful scrutiny of
mailing list communications.

When replying personally to an address (harvested) from public mailing list, a
customary permission to speak, i.e. communicate personally, is sought before
advising anything in private.

This is what they don't teach you as a mailing list etiquette, neither it is
(probably) part of netiquette.

That was a real big mistake. The rest is found by reading the signature at

Hi,

I am sorry if you (Mahasagar?) are offended by my email. And sorry other PLUG
members for the spam below:

The email was sent directly to you and not on the PLUG list. I joined the
list, so that I can continue learning what is happening in PLUG, even if I am
unable to attend the PLUG meetings. And anything which doesn't talk about PLUG
on PLUG mailing list is a spam for me. Correct me if I am wrong.

In one of the earlier emails, when Arun Bhat asked permission to attend the
meeting, and Manjusha replied it is open to all, I think everybody got her
point. I personally don't think it was necessary to give english gyan to all
the people in PLUG mailing list. At least, IMO, that's spam!

I apologize if you think I offended you, but I used my freedom to express my
feelings, and I did NOT use PLUG mailing list for it earlier.

With regards,
Shirish Padalkar

If any of you felt offended, you may accept his apology, I was not offended so
there is no need for me to accept his apology.

Now on Slackware 13.1 after a gap of 14++ years.

Got it running in first go except the LILO...

Hmm... still remember few things and have managed to forget most of
 the important ones...

Fixed LILO problem and few other hiccups that came with my choice of things.

Faced with difficulties of getting few things up and running as the
way self is used to experience in Mandriva...

1. Networking and network profiles
2. Openoffice

and possibly few other things that I have quickly forgotten to
remember, I switch back to Mandriva thereafter in next 2 days.

With this clean install of Mandriva, the problems I was facing with
upgrade of Mandriva also went away.

So Mandriva upgrade is still not as clean as it should be (I am
tempted to use the name(s) of some other OS)

One interesting clean upgrade process I have had a chance to observe
was that of CentOS (Actually SME server).

Overall Slackware is much much improved than the way I used it years
ago but there is still a lot of margin for improvement when I compare
it with the user experience of Mandriva :-)

Maybe, maybe I am too old and really attuned to the way of thinking of
Mandriva habits to quickly accept Slackware's way of working...
however I have for now kept my option of switching to Slackware open
with the fingers crossed, though I have switched back to Mandiva.

Reporting successful upgrade following these steps (eating my own
manfood for the list)

There were couple of places where I felt that these instructions could
be better...

I followed command line and for some reason GUI kicked me out after
about 10 minutes... when I did CTL-ALT-F1 it was showing something
like restarting initrd (or something similar ...) that I have
forgotten to note down. So I rebooted shorting after starting the
upgrade process.

(I basically switched the computer on-off 4 times (for my own reasons
that it traveled with me) and completed the process.)

To ensure no (or minimal) hiccups from the second boot (first reboot
after upgrade started), i entered linux single user mode and run
init 3 There by reducing the (imaginary) problems of unbalanced
update...
{This was done after noticing a problem of new kernel and old modules
not working together in the upgrade process. So I rebooted the old
kernel and went ahead as reported above.}

I think kernel should have been upgraded way later in the process
which is not the case (may be I am not technically qualified to make
such a statement but hey, I am the sufferer :-)

Overall these instructions helped a lot in understanding and
planning the complete upgrade process.

Wish to thank the (person or) team responsible for these detailed steps...

[PLUG] BIOS update under Linux...

2010-07-13 Thread . हा . सा . .
Over the last weekend i was trying to update bios of IBM Thinkpad R52
(that originally has Windows XP license which
I erased and installed Mandriva 2010 :-)

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade

was very helpful in understanding this difficult issue.

The only way for me now to update bios was take help of GRUB :-)

Which turned out to be a great educational exercise on grub for me as
I was completely oblivious to it and it's issues... till now.

(Luckily :-) I had EXT4 on that laptop which made my life even more fun...

After spending about a day I could manage to load run the .IMG file
of new bios but despite that could not update the bios.

With a tonnes of worries and a pinch of salt I had to switch off (a
well advised NO NO) the PC since no activity happened for 15 minutes
even after navigating inside the bios update program and hitting the
final ENTER DO NOT SWITCH OFF button. Beware, those who have
dealt with bios update may have horror stories to tell!

however from the same piece of software I could later try the third option.
{
Option 1. Read the documetation
Option 2. Update BIOS
Option 3. Update model no. etc.
}
upon executing it the machine would promptly switch off correctly.

To make the long story short has anybody recently or in the past
updated the IBM R52 bios this way under Linux...
Because else I am left with no option but to reload windows on it just
to upgrade bios... :-(

The Silver lining is Mandriva 2010 Grub as boot loader worked well
with EXT4 against some reported issues elsewhere with other distros.

Any suggestions are welcome on subject of updating IBM bios using GRUB.

The similar documentation of using LILO for the same purpose would add
more meat to the Linux Documentation Project :-)

The bottomine: Machine still boot and runs Mandriva 2010, though the

After 2-3 days of struggle and fruitless efforts I reattached 15 LCD

productive use of one's eye by 19 LCD...

that is exactly when I started wondering if under the disguise of
simplicity the usability is actually getting impeded...

The answer is as simple as it would be if I say, I want to have an LIC policy...

From that perspective it is not clear what do you want to do in Linux.

But knowing more about Linux, enough to manage your own computer could
be a good first step in right direction..

Mind you, yours switching career to Linux is a long journey and it
depends on where you want to reach, how far you want to study..

Perhaps you can start by getting more people like you involved, and

[PLUG] Upgrading Comments

2010-05-04 Thread . हा . सा . .
This mail is to share of my few thoughts... so if you can easily get
bored by somebody else's thoughts kindly disregard... else feel free
to cross-criticize and share your thoughts if applicable!

So far in the past I have done full version upgrade of Mandriva (more
than twice) and have clean installed openSUSE, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and
Mandriva on more than one occasions. So never had a chance to really
witness the process of major version upgrade, e.g. from kubuntu 9.10
to kubuntu 10.4 (which I am doing right now), for any other distro.
On couple of occasions I tried to shift distros and found few problem
with openSUSE at the time which I reported.

This entire perspective with new insights make me feel that Mandriva
has still few more places where it can improve.

One such example is, let say I have 3 network interfaces on my lappy
and i am downloading from the best connection, suddenly the best
connection is broken, then if I am right Mandriva will not renegotiate
the new route to its download repository while as I see kbuntu does
this...

I find that openSUSE is very good in restarting from last known
upgrade point (sudden power outage with no UPS backup to installation
machine) which probably others are not easily able to.

I see that major version upgrade process of kubuntu looks cleaner than
Mandriva although I am yet to complete it fully for the first time.

However for sure, Default KDE Mandriva theme is more intuitive for
*the initiated as well as uninitiated* Linux User.

You have two major options:

1. learn how to fix grub configuration etc. everytime it messes up.

For # 1, (without prejudice) suggest you to read the documentation

Remember there are (at least I have faced such) problems with US based

Level of support for most US based hosting is good enough. Otherwise there
would not be such large number of sites hosted from all over the world.

Very true. I have some of my own sites which are charitable
information exchange where i do not care much as to what state they

As I remember, tally is available on Linux. But most of the vendors do
not know about it. Also, support is poor.

If you are looking for FOSS accounting/billing applications, there are not
 many.
GNUCash, GNUkhata are some of the choices.

What are the non-foss alternatives?

It seems tally is so tightly integrated with M$O that OO.o installed
machine can not be used in conjunction with Tally for certain
functionality. So generally speaking it would be wise to start
thinking of Tally alternatives right now..

non-foss Linux alternatives exploration may also allow little bit

auto_da_alloc(*)Many broken applications don't use fsync() when
noauto_da_alloc replacing existing files via patterns such as
fd = open(foo.new)/write(fd,..)/close(fd)/
rename(foo.new, foo), or worse yet,
fd = open(foo,
O_TRUNC)/write(fd,..)/close(fd).
If auto_da_alloc is enabled, ext4 will detect
the replace-via-rename and replace-via-truncate
patterns and force that any delayed allocation
blocks are allocated such that at the next
journal commit, in the default data=ordered
mode, the data blocks of the new file are forced
to disk before the rename() operation is
committed. This provides roughly the same level
of guarantees as ext3, and avoids the
zero-length problem that can happen when a
system crashes before the delayed allocation
blocks are forced to disk.

If someone is against some term/entity, another alternative should
also be given. Otherwise, the efforts go waste.

If you run a for-profit organization, and this question stems from
your need to use some GPL software in your marketed one, then I'd
recommend getting a legal opinion, since you may run into *serious*
trouble if you make a mistake on the licensing front.

And who else can be the best lawyer for you but for yourself?

As long as your intent conscious; is clear and transparent, you will
be able to defend yourself through the most admantine walls of legal
lunacy...

setting
vga=extended
before label and
vga=788
after the label in lilo.conf and also putting in the boot cd and
reconfiguring the X by going into upgrade seems to have solved the
problem for me atleast for now.

on my Vista laptop working on same broadband connection. Does anyone
know why this happens, and moreover how can it be fixed?

Change the MTU in your broadband connection settings to 1492 or 1472
and all sites will work the way they should.

Good to know that. Its one feature that bolts me to arch :)

Just in case somebody was actually thinking of this path to travel..
here is an update...

Couple of things got disabled during upgraded and they are yet to be
back in shape but overall i could defer a clean install for next time
(or till i can learn more of how i can switch to ext-4 without clean
install of some sort..)

Hopefully new batch of updates which are being applied should fix
at-least one of the two glitches that happened with upgrade from
2009.1 to 2010.

Overall satisfaction level is above 88% :-)

If you are using Ext3 currently, refer to

 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ext4_in_Fedora_11#How_do_I_migrate_from_Ext3_to_Ext4.3F

How to achieve that for all existing partitions without need for clean
install is going to be interesting with exception of /home. Because i
do not know of anybody backing up partitions other than /home :-)

Trivial if you use a Live or rescue cd. Mount, chroot, run tune2fs and
 bingo.

Not so easy as it may look...

One does need to update /etc/fstab after following your hints so next
normal boot will have *less* trouble :-)

If you think editing fstab is such a big deal, don't bother changing
 filesystems.

Editing fstab is not a big deal, but i was just trying to visualize
that average user FTM (For That Matter, me 2 included concluded :-)
have to look at all possible angles before taking up such a task.
This is a definite question for me to test future candidates for MCE
(Mandriva Certified Engineer). I will learn a lot from that :-)

And it definitely will not be trivial exercise if things get messed up
midway somewhere...

And your responses instilled in my mind (confidence ) the definite
need for that care to be taken!

Re: [PLUG] Mandriva 2010

2009-12-07 Thread . हा . सा . .
There is a problem with Mandriva 2010 and Fedora 12 too (i have a
fresh report on that) that is to be aware of.

After upgrade many times login manager (X) doesnot correctly kick in.

Meaning machine is rendered non-responsive to any key combination. So
only choice is to hardboot it by pressing on-off switch.

Sometimes this has to be done 2-3 times before X can correctly get
started and machine does not give that stare or gaze to the user.

Hope people will have patient to be patient to such behavior
because everything looks fine.

The choice maybe to hibernate (suspend to ram अथवा disk) the laptop
(which i have not tried) but this does look like a spanner in the
wheel!
