[PLUG] [OT]: MSRTC Volvo online reservation
Folks, I travel from Pune to Mumbai and back regularly. I don't reserve tickets usually, but I thought of doing so this time. I booked my tickets through the MSRTC Volvo online reservation center at Parihar Chowk, Aundh. To my surprise, I was in for a shock. They were using Mozilla Firefox as the browser and the application was made in PHP. Wow! I was initially assuming that the Firefox was used on Windows, but when I went close, I realized, it was Fedora Linux. Wow! Amazing Superb! I'm so happy to see something like this! Have you had any such experiences in the past? Is MSRTC using Linux distros at all its booking centers? -- http://www.gnu.org.in See the Web#39;s breaking stories, chosen by people like you. The word Free in english is ambiguous (as even suggested by RMS), and that need not be continued in other languages. The fact that Sanskrit is fundamental to hindi, marathi is one reason why the word swatantra suits better. Swatantra itself is composed of two words swa + tantra - where /swa/ indicates self and /tantra/ is ideology. Roughly speaking, our technology (and your technology) (in KDE's case). Re: [PLUG] Free Softwares for School
--- Devendra Laulkar wrote: Lets just step back see what happened. A person is asking for freely distributable software for schools on the Pune *GNU/Linux* Users Mailing List. People are recommending free software alternatives to proprietary software. I would request the OP to clear things out. Instead of recommending free software, you are doing exactly opposite - finding proprietary replacements for free software. Piracy is a term that many are familiar with, especially people in Indian cities. I need not tell you the causes and the problems caused from it. There are two ways to it. Either use free software or Free Software. Note the distinction I use. It is not difficult for people to migrate to a Free OS completely. But there are a lot of factors that one has to consider. Apart from that, not all hardware that a user buys has open specification or drivers whose source code is available. Somewhere or the other, there are blocks of non-free code. Perhaps, the BIOS that one uses (if in a EEPROM) in a laptop, is non-free and an alternative called Linux BIOS is on its way to be tested under few motherboards. And then you claim to believe in Free Software associated with FSF. This is sacrilege !! The reason I believe in Free Software is precisely because of the four freedoms offered. As far as I can recall, I have been able to follow only Freedom 0 and Freedom 2. The point that I'm trying to make is, there's still a long way to go. There are several steps that has to be taken in order to ensure a smooth transition. [OT] If I sound rude, please forgive me. I don't intend to. --- Devendra Laulkar wrote: I don't understand the connection to piracy at all. At the risk of sounding like a zealot I am going to say this :- We have already deviated a lot on the actual topic. Perhaps, we have a choice to stop here or take it off-list. There is no difference between free software Free Software (esp in a LUG mailing list) You may have missed out an email on this. I referred to free as that relating to no cost and Free Software as defined by FSF. All I am saying is that you are an FSF fellow, you believe in their goals, you have read about what Free Software means. Don't promote proprietary software unnecessarily. Agreed. I'll stop this discussion on the list, though it may be carried off-list. The interpretation has lost the original orientation.
