Re: [PLUG] Any suggestions for linux distros

2012-04-03 Thread Roshan

Myself newbie to linux and looking for distro which can fit completely after
installation on 2 GB pata hd.

Are you using a very old x86 PC? 2 GB PATA HD? Rejuvenating it?

Can anyone suggest any flavour . ?

Puppy Linux -as suggested by another member or DamnSmallLinux should be good to
try.

I do not know of any start-ups but I know there's one company that does has its

to you to include it in your interview/story.

Hi,

We are planning a series of stories and interviews of open source start-ups
from India (Linus' interview triggered the need). So, if you know any such
start-up please let me know.

You can contact me at Muktware.com.

[PLUG] [OT]: MSRTC Volvo online reservation

2009-08-26 Thread Roshan
Folks,

I travel from Pune to Mumbai and back regularly. I don't reserve tickets
usually, but I thought of doing so this time.

I booked my tickets through the MSRTC Volvo online reservation center at
Parihar Chowk, Aundh.

To my surprise, I was in for a shock. They were using Mozilla Firefox as the
browser and the application was made in PHP. Wow! I was initially assuming that
the Firefox was used on Windows, but when I went close, I realized, it was
Fedora Linux. Wow! Amazing

Superb! I'm so happy to see something like this!

Have you had any such experiences in the past? Is MSRTC using Linux distros at
all its booking centers?

There are two of them that come to my mind:

1. Revolution OS - Order the DVD!
2. The Code Linux - Finnish movie (with english and (finnish?) languages)

Note, you have to take prior permission from the director of the movie to
showcase Revolution OS to a 'public' audience. Revolution OS doesn't fall under
a Open / GPL-like license for that media. Or for that matter, it even doesn't
come under a Creative Commons license.
You can drop in an email to the director and he approves for any non-commerical
events (LUG meet, College seminar etc.)

I don't know much about the licensing of the second movie.

Can you suggest me any url to download ?
If any one had it, please share with me.

I would request you to avoid downloading and distributing this moive(s) as you
would do for Free and Open Source Software.

[PLUG] [X-post]: Our Next FreeIndian: Runa B.

2008-05-11 Thread Roshan
List,

Our current interview features a contributor to
various l10n projects who started work as early as
2001-2002. Internet was a unsolved mystery and emails
were something that this contributor was afraid of in
her early days of computing, but now is able to meet
people across the globe from her small little room
as she describes it. Co-incidently, she also happens
to be the first lady featured in FreeIndian. Read the
interview to know more.

Our current interview features the Gujarati Geek (alliteration

Not really, if one is /taught/ as to how the IDE is working in
background to complete the tasks of compiling / debugging etc. Note,
I'm not supporting the notion of *using* an IDE, just that, it must not
be ruled out. I support the view, of *not starting* with an IDE,

I realized this after talking to some engg. students who had
never used the command line to compile their programs. The downside
of not using an IDE will be - the instructor/supervisor might have to
answer more queries about the development process rather than the
 code written :-s

Well, there is some lack of /transfer/ of knowledge, I guess. Theory
classes / session must point out the tools and explain as to what they
do actually. Later, this must be extended to sessions in the lab, where
the reality is seen!

Hmm, may be we have digressed too much. Could the OP get a copy of
Knoppix to try out simple C programs?

The Hindi translation looks great. If there are translators working on

By no means, I'm trying to act as a fanboy or enforcing something.
However, I *strongly* recommend the use of the word *swatantra*
instead of the word muft. (I'm not sure, if there have been flames on
any of the l10n lists -- there was one in GLUG-BOM sometime ago).

The word Free in english is ambiguous (as even suggested by RMS), and
that need not be continued in other languages. The fact that Sanskrit
is fundamental to hindi, marathi is one reason why the word swatantra
suits better. Swatantra itself is composed of two words swa
+ tantra - where /swa/ indicates self and /tantra/ is ideology.
Roughly speaking, our technology (and your technology) (in KDE's
case).

I would also recommend, stating that KDE is free of cost could be
indicated by the word /'muft'/. This could be added to translation,
wherever applicable.

By no means, it is just philosophy, philosophy , philosophy. No!
Just that the *same* idea is conveyed, regardless of the language.

Kudos! Great work! Translators. :)

(I hope, this thread doesn't start burning into flames. If it does, I'll
probably just forget about it.)

Well, if 7-zip has improved its support, great. I'm

Well, I'm generalizing based on experiences, though it
may be wrong to do so. However, it has been true most
of the times, that such softwares are mis-used.

--- Devendra Laulkar wrote:

Lets just step back see what happened. A person is

on the Pune *GNU/Linux* Users Mailing List.
People are recommending free software alternatives
 to proprietary software.

I would request the OP to clear things out.

Instead of recommending free software, you are doing
exactly opposite - finding proprietary replacements
 for free software.

Piracy is a term that many are familiar with,
especially people in Indian cities. I need not tell
you the causes and the problems caused from it. There
are two ways to it. Either use free software or Free
Software. Note the distinction I use.

It is not difficult for people to migrate to a Free OS
completely. But there are a lot of factors that one
has to consider. Apart from that, not all hardware
that a user buys has open specification or drivers
whose source code is available. Somewhere or the
other, there are blocks of non-free code. Perhaps, the
BIOS that one uses (if in a EEPROM) in a laptop, is
non-free and an alternative called Linux BIOS is on
its way to be tested under few motherboards.

And then you claim to believe in Free Software
associated with FSF. This is sacrilege !!

The reason I believe in Free Software is precisely
because of the four freedoms offered. As far as I can
recall, I have been able to follow only Freedom 0 and
Freedom 2.

The point that I'm trying to make is, there's still a
long way to go. There are several steps that has to be
taken in order to ensure a smooth transition.
