 thanks all for your inputs.

finally, for about rs. 700 more (processor+mobo) over celeron, i got an
athlon x2 dual core!! 'coolquiet' and pretty fast with 1gb ram.

64-bit processor, isn't it ? So in case you are going for slackware, get
slamd64.
OpenSuse has 64-bit variant I believe.

Enjoy !!

with similar cooling facilities provided AMD CPUs are found to be
cooler (temperature wise)... by some people who seriously invest time
doing such measurements. I am sure people would be glad to be proved
otherwise in such cases :-)

I *had* celeron once( looong time back) and it really is not even good for
browsing a flash laden site. Get pentium for anything serious.

My laptop is celeron 1.5 with 256 MB ram. Its fine for whatever I do (visual
studio, interdev, ms sql and some java thrown sometimes).

So I advise you to save money on the chip and buy more RAM with it.

Why not check for Sempron too? I have never used
either Celeron or Sempron but from what I've heard
and read Semprons come cheaper and offer better
performance than Celerons.

I have used Athlon XP 2000 running on (1.6 GHz), Sempron 2400 (1.6 GHz)
these machines i have used for almost for 3 years and are still working
fine. I would suggest that you go in for a good motherboard with these
processors, mine were ASUS with nivida chipset.
(BTW if you are going for AMD processor don't get confused with the numbers
like XP 2000 or 2400 there are the model numbers and not the processors
speed. Look at the process-box, somewhere in corner in small letters they
have given the actual speed!! ;) )

Other latest purchase is a AMD turion 64 bit laptop. And i am happy with its
performance also and have also not observed and severe heating problems
though i have used the laptop for more than 6 hours at a stretch.

Get athlon XP X2 or whatever latest. Last time I got a quote in April, I could
get CPU+mobo(7500/-) for less than price of P4 CPU(8500/-). *YMMV*.
