Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC and Mac instructions

2008-01-19 Thread Braidy

I'm having problems getting Alien BBC working with Slimserver 6.5 and OS
10.3.

I've followed the instructions regarding installation of mplayer and
lame at the beginning of this thread and the almost identical
instructions at the Alien site (x2systems.com/AlienBBC/installation)

I've tried downloading LAME from the Blacktree site and also the
thalictrum.com site. (The iTunes-lame download I really didn't know
what to do with so I'm not sure now whether that is now loaded or not.
But I've also tried the the LAME 3.97 package both before and after
trying that one.)

Alien appears on the Squeezebox and tries to connect but then stops.
I've increased the time that it tries to get a radio stream.

I've followed the instructions a few times now without success and I'm
certain I've been downloading the correct files for my system. Are
there any easy things to check? I love this plugin and am desperate to
get it working.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC and Mac instructions

You may need to get a version of mplayer that runs on OSX 10.3.

Usually the mplayer link in the instructions does not work on OSX
10.3.x . so you should do a standalone test - Open a terminal window
and try to run your mplayer.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Headphone safety plugin? (extend Volume Lock??)

2008-01-19 Thread peterw

bossanova808;260346 Wrote:
Hmm why would you want to ignore ReplayGain?

1. Because it makes the plugin much easier. Currently VolumeLock code
is only executed when a user tries to change the volume. To take RG
into account, it would have to do some work every time a new song
started. And that's not very clean or easy -- there's a new song even
that plugins can register for, but the event fires a few seconds before
the song changes. In SyncOptions, I have the plugin start looking every
few fractions of a second after the new song event fires. It's not very
pretty, and not something I'd want taking server CPU around every song
change.

2. Because, upon further thought, I don't think it makes sense. RG is
applied by the physical device (Squeezebox/Transporter -- I think
Squeezebox 1 and SliMP3 don't support RG). If you have two copies of a
song, one with RG of -2dB and another with RG of -5dB and play them in
order on a player that's using RG, the second song will play 3 dB
quieter even though the player volume doesn't change. What you want is
to cap the volume for a typical track --whether with software like
VolumeLock, or hardware as described below-- and use RG to keep loud
tracks from being played louder, and to keep quiet tracks from being
lost.

3. If you're using analog outputs (including the headphone jacks), you
should also look at the Preamp Volume Control setting (in the Player
Audio setting page), too. It applies some specific dB of gain/loss to
all analog output, so you could use this now --without VolumeLock at
all-- to reduce the analog output across the board, allowing you to use
the full range of the regular volume control -- you could even turn it
all the way up to 11 with the web UI. I'd also recommend to you the
wiki articles on line level matching, e.g.
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectToPowerAmp. Using such
physical matching along with analog outs is probably your best way to
be *sure* not to play anything too loud. Remember, VolumeLock and
SlimServer/SqueezeCenter are GPL software, with no warranty. :-)

I do think a jive/sb interface would be useful but could certainly also
live with a web only version myself.

I'm happy to help if I can - I may not be useful with perl/development
unless I get into it a bit, but I can certainly help with testing etc,
and/or am willing to take on anything else useful you can think of!!

I've already started improving the player UI in 6.5.x (switching to the
normal radio button interface and adding the new maximum volume
choice) since I haven't moved my main system to SC7 yet, but I probably
won't bother with a web UI except in the SC7 release -- and I might skip
the web UI if I can easily make a Jive/Controller choice list menu.

I don't have a Mac so I'm not sure of the exact details and I am not
sure what you mean by dropping mplayer into Terminal.

Just open a Terminal and then execute mplayer by changing directory to
where you have stored mplayer and then typing in ./mplayer.

If it works you should get an mplayer banner with help message.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Request for a new plugin

2008-01-19 Thread tonyptony

I'm not suggesting I'd do this - I don't know the first thing about
creating a plugin - but am throwing this idea out there for anyone
who'd like to give it a try...

I've been using digital equalization with my SB3, and one of the areas
of great importance is making sure there is no clipping with the EQ in
the loop. I was thinking a great utility would be something that can
scan all the songs in one's library, and provide a breakdown of signal
amplitude for each track. Maybe even a way to determine the amplitude
by both peak and across a designated band. So that you could identify a
track that has the highest amplitude, but maybe it does it at only one
frequency, versus another that has the highest overall amplitude from
20Hz - 20KHz. Then it would be clear which tracks to use for testing
with EQ in the loop to insure there's no clipping.

Anyone else think this may be useful?

It looks like that mplayer is trying to use libraries that are not on
your system. Also the BPT/Trap error is also a comon error with some
CPU or OS (altivec ?) mismatch.

Getting a version of mplayer suitable for OSX 10.3 users has been a
frequent problem - the user usually ends up having to build their own.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC and Mac instructions

2008-01-19 Thread bpa

It looks like you didn't get the mplayer binary when installing it.

I think you'll need some more specific instruction to get the right
mplayer binary from the distribution.

FRom an old post

As I remarked earlier, the actual mplayer file is deeply hidden inside
 MPlayer OSX.

 Control-click to Show Package Contents.

Go to Contents Resources External_Binaries, and you will see an
 item called mplayer.

This still isn't what we want.

Control-click again and once more Show Package Contents. Contents
contains a folder called MacOS, which in turn contains two Unix files,
 mplayer and mplayer_noaltivec

Try using the mplayer_noaltive version on your system but rename it to
mplayer when you install it into /usr/local/bin and then try to run it
from Terminal.
