The NAS where is running the SBS have to low power to do this, but my joggler have enough power to do it. Or my EEE Box or my EEE PC. Joggler is allways online in the kitchen but have if i am sitting in Living room nothing to do or special during the night he can do the Job. At a later point Logitech can do some developement also to let this job doing the Touch or the radio like a etrayz i own or a synology. My suggestion is from beginning to find a way that this app needs not absolute to be stored and working on the same machine like the SBS is located. If you realy think about server client application think about a shared user modell. Like a cluster that the maschines are able to share their power what is necessary like in a cluster. If this application runs as a server the place where the server should be located should be independant. Logitech runs the way to support that 2 radios you can buy are able for stereo. If you have such a combination inside the Network of several squeezeboxes let them realy but together their RAM and CPU Power to help like inside a cluster to do this work together. Something like this in all of honor your developement Erland is a escape from your power consumting plugins. I do not use them like the Ignaz plugin on normal use. if i need i put on my EEEBox that take the Data from my NAS. But to find a way of shared CPU and RAM Power is demonstrate in several projects. SMD consists of multiple parts and each part can execute on a separate machine on the network already today: The user interface parts: - Rich client (Which typically will run on the laptop/desktop/tablet you are sitting beside) - SBS plugin (which needs to run on same machine as SBS, this is purely perl based, no java in the plugin, so it won't use much resources) And the server parts: - The SMD server with all the browsing and storage logic (does not have to run on same machine as SBS) - The SMD database which contains the data (does not have to run on same machine as SBS) It's the SMD server and SMD database that currently use most CPU. The SMD server and SMD database needs to be on the same hardware if you are using the embedded database that's the default, but it's perfectly fine to use one of the other standalone databases supported, for example MySQL, and then it can run on a different machine than the SMD server. However, for the system to work, you need at least the following somewhere in the network: - The SMD plugin - The SMD server - The SMD database - SBS The rich client is optional and not required for the system to work but you probably want to have it installed on your laptop/desktop/tablet for data management. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). The first time you browse after SMD server has been started is a bit slow, 5-10 seconds in my setup, the reason is that the plugin in SBS doesn't establish contact with the SMD server. Also, I think some of the menu contents are cached on the perl side so if you access the same menu twice without accessing a lot of other menus in-between, the second time is going to be faster. Finally, some things are also cached on the SMD server side, so this can also speed up a menu when it's accessed the second time. And that's a dual core MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM. Do you have anything special in your tagging ? What file types ? Like a lot of extra metadata which isn't scanned by the normal SBS scanner ? It might also be good to know that SMD import is a lot slower if you do a full import using the Full Import button in the SBS Settings/Advanced/Social Music Discovery page, compared to if you just let it be triggered by the SBS scan. The performance is the same the first time but the second time it's triggered by the SBS scanner it's faster because it only stores meta data for new files. It still calculates the SMD identity checksum for all files, so it's not a fully incremental scanning, but the first SMD import phase will be faster since it doesn't have to store and parse the meta data of most of the files. Also, for FLAC files the SMD identity checksum calculation is really fast as it just read the checksum already available in the FLAC format while it for other file formats need to calculate the checksum each time it imports a file. If you run it again, take a look at the CPU usage and check if most of the CPU usage is in the perl process or the java process. SMD identity calculation and tag reading happens in the perl process while the java process interprets the metadata and stores it in the database. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). It's my test library on the Mac. I don't think there are a lot of special tags but it's almost exclusively mp3 and AAC (at least 90% mp3), only one or two FLAC albums. Some SXSW stuff so a LOT of artists compared to the number of tracks (a few 1.000 artists). I suspect this difference is believable for a primarily non flac library. It will be dependant on the io performance of the server hardware. In normal SBS scanning and SMD operating on flac files, the scan process only requires the portion of each file containing the tags to be read from disk. Often if you rerun the scan it is significantly faster as the sectors required are all cached by the os even for quite a large library. However as SMD wants a hash of the audio portion of the file, for non flac files it has to read all the audio data and this is essentially io bound and will be much slower. Flac computes a crc at creation time and hence we have it for free. I don't see any easy way round this, but it does mean that if the library is primarily flac then the scan performance will be significantly better. (and you can get away with a lower performance server) -- Triode Triode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90278 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

(and you can get away with a lower performance server) It definitely needs to be calculated once, what we can do is to cache it so we don't have to calculate it the next time as long as the file name is exactly the same as before. Caching can be done either in database or in tags (written by puddletag or something similar). However, I don't think we should worry too much about this yet, I still believe that most SMD users will run a full rescan once and then maintain the data in the SMD database and then it doesn't matter much if a full rescan takes a bit of time. It's more important that we can make incremental rescan quick because that's going to be used every time you add new music files to your library. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland).
