 1. OK, I'll uninstall the plugin and try to install it again form the
LMS plugin tab (although it looks like everything except the actual
 streaming works).
If it looks ok and you can see that the aplay is running - then leave
it.
 2. I don't think I need to use PulseAudio, especially if that's what's
hindering me form using this... I'll look into how I remove PulseAudio
 (if that's going to help).
Slow down.
Are you experienced with Linux ? Did you make a conscious choice to
have Pulse audio or did you stick with defaults. On some system
Pulseaudio is tied into other applications and so may break your
system.
If not experienced and are using defaults - then there are a few things
you can try to get the plugin to work with Pulseaudio.

The most likely reason for failing is permissions.
Is LMS running as a service under its own userid or is it running in
foreground under your own id ?
If LMS is running as a service, then you are trying to copy audio
(managed bny Pulseaudio server) belonging to one user (i.e you) and get
it copied to another user (i.e. LMS). This won't work if Pulseaudio is
being run on a per-user mode and it needs to be set up to run as a
system mode. IIRC Then you have to add you own user id and LMS user
id to the user group pulse-access. Then reboot to have all the changes
take effect.

This looks like just what I need (a way to remotely restart LMS when

Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to wait for this to be
updated for 7.8? Thanks!Nope. It works fine with 7.8. When you say 'won't
 install', what do
you mean? Are you following the instructions from the head of this
thread? That said, it's been a while since I've done anything but a
manual install. I'll test this today.

 HTH
I installed and run etherwake on my linux debian system to wake my
vortexbox appliance from my laptop when not in the same room as my
Logitech Touch (which wakes it automatically when it tries to connect).
There are several similar tools for Windows (I have used Fusion WOL in
the past).

Running this obviously requires extra user input, but it's not exactly
onerous once you have a command set up ready to run with a single
click.

I seem to recall that when I used squeezeplay it also sent wake packets
(I now use squeezelite which doesn't do so).

LMS 7.8 on VortexBox Midi, FLACs 16 or 24 bit. Touch on Ethernet (in
another room), digital out to a Musical Fidelity M1 CLiC. Old wireless
laptop running Linux Mint Debian controls server using Chromium.
Squeezelite on Ubuntu Windows desktops plus the laptop. Meridian
Explorer USB DAC to listen directly to Vortexbox other PCs as
required. Spare Touch in loft!

I am not experienced. I made no conscious decisions..! I've read that
running Pulseaudio as system-wide is very wrong
(http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/WhatIsWrongWithSystemWide/),
so I tried to change the permissions in hopes that that would help: I've
added myself and squeezeboxserver to the pulse-access group and
squeezeboxserver to the audio group (with: sudo usermod -g pulse-access
yakir, and sudo usermod -g pulse-access squeezeboxserver, and sudo
usermod -g audio squeezeboxserver). It didn't help... Any ideas?

2013-08-05 Thread kidstypike

I've just installed Vortexbox on a netbook, installation seems fine.
Can I use a USB attached hard drive as my library?
If yes, what path do I put here: (from a windows PC: I have no Linux
