Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: PlayHLS Plugin - plugin to play Apple HLS m3u8 stream

2015-02-28 Thread kingswindsor

It has been failing after 30 secs or 5 mins or some other random
interval so the 10 hours was a surprise. I have been using the latest
menu.opml so I suppose that is the iplayer url

URL=iplayer://live?aac=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_three.m3u8icon=http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/imda/logos/radio3_logomobile1-1.pngradiovis=fm/ce1/c203/09100;

How would I tell if the m3u8 stream had failed and it was trying other
formats?

Hey guys,

all this is really cool.

However I still wonder whether anybody is trying to get it working on
Windows, too?

I am already thinking about converting my whole Squeezebox setup to a
Raspberry PI to get it working.

Google Music by the way has just increased the song limit from 20k to
50k!

Thanks for the great job!

Cheers

Over in the BBC blog, Andrew Scott has said that the RTMP streams will

not published a timeline for that. If you are using a device which
consumes those streams you should expect them to stop as well.

The significance of this is that the RTMP/AAC streams that we're
accessing presently for Listen Again are at risk. But is Andrew Scott
correct in saying that they have only ever been expected to be used for
the BBC's own applications? Does anyone have a full history of how it is
that we've ended-up using the RTMP/AAC streams on this basis? I suspect
 he's plain wrong!

Sorry but Andrew Scott is right. When BBC started using Flash there was
only Adobe players and so only legal way of playing flash was using an
Adobe authorised system. The RTMP protocol was Adobe confidential and
proprietary and not published. It was reverse engineered but any non
Adobe source code for RTMP based in the US had take down notices issued
and IIRC legal proceedings were started. Reverse engineered players were
still available outside the US. I'm not sure of the timing but possibly
a year or two after BBC started using Flash , Adobe changed their minds
(possibly because of Apple and iPhone not allowing Flash) published the
RTMP protocol so 3rd party players could be made available legally.
However , breaking Adobe encrypted RTMP (RTMPE) was/is still illegal.

Again IIRC, once the RTMP protocol was in the public domain and no
threat of law suits, it became feasible to do a Flash based plugin.

In summary, when BBC designed and then implemented their Flash based
Iplayer, they did not think there could be 3rd party players as Adobe
was actively protecting their protocols.

From a BBC point of view, Flash is heavyweight protocol whereas
chunked/HTTP (HLS/HDS,DASH) is lightweight and requires less server
processing (and more modern encryption support) and so longer term Flash
needed to be phased out.

hey there,
i bought your app and im really satisfied with it and use it every day.
I only miss one thing: to synchronize a playlist and not just download
it. So if i add a song to the playlist in LMS, Squeeze Ctrl
automatically downloads it as soon as its connected to the server and if
i delete a song from the playlist, it gets deleted from the phone or
tablet storage to.
Another thing that would be nice is to use the app to play downloaded
songs without the need of being connected to LMS, but thats not that
important.

Triodes applet on our Logitech UE Squeezebox Wi Fi Radio was finally
turned off yesterday. The listen again feature was probably the most
used piece of software in our house.

I have already worked how to get live streams on the radio and can sort
listen again via our Mac/smart phones BBC iplayer and a Bluetooth
speaker.

However it would be even better if there was a work around on Triodes
applet. It would be very helpful to know if this is technically
possible before looking around for other Wi Fi radio alternatives.

Since it stops erratically the all I can ssume it is network / server
issue.

The iplayer URL you are using will always play Akaimai High stream.
There is a second CDN Limelight and it might be better serving your

you could try the med stream with akaimai and also high/med with

Since the BBCIplayer still works playing for the moment, it is likely
that Applet needs an update to change the mediaselector version.

1. If you are playing to a player that can play AAC (e.g. Squeezelite,

however this should only be used with AAC (i.e.BBC) streams.
2. Flac compression level of ffmpeg can be reduced and other users have

If all PlayHLS file type options are greyed out, your system cannot find
the programs used for the conversions. Take a look at the files in
folder /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/Plugins/PlayHLS
.

Are they all accessible to your squeezebox user?

If they are, what does your custom-convert.conf file contain? If it
refers to the ffmpeg program, then that program is not accessible to the
squeezebox user. If it refers to playhls.sh then look in the next Bin
directory at the playhls.sh file and see what program it is trying to
run.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Batch / Mass rating?

2015-02-28 Thread Robbyell

Guess I’m not alone in congratulating Erland for these fantastic

answer is too! Can I “batch rate” a number of songs, either directly or
via a Playlist? I’ve changed how I want to rate songs, so effectively
need to “add one” to the majority of my ratings (3-star songs become
4-star etc).

Hope someone can help!

DSM4
Softsqueeze via headphones or one of 2 SB Classics and a Boom

When I entered the command above patch -b sigpipe.batch the cursor

to make a cup of coffee and when I came back nothing had changed. So I
closed Putty and rebooted the server.

The problem was apparently fixed as the rebuffering problems largely
stopped. However I have no idea whether the patch fixed the problem or
simply rebooting the server did the job. I was still getting the odd
rebuffering problem at the start of a stream which usually disappeared
after 30 seconds, so I upped the radio buffer to 15 seconds and have not
had a problem since.

I will report back if I start to get problems again.

Unless you have a small processor - patch should have only taken
seconds. I wonder if you system is overloaded.

The patch should not affect buffering per se unless rebuffering was
caused by having many ffmpegs still running in the background or
something else was taken up CPU.

When you get rebuffering - did you check CPU usage ?

 * a Joggler running SqueezeOS, also, I think, Debian under the bonnet

I have tried to follow the bpa/triode instructions to install the helper
plugin and ffmpeg, but things aren't working for me. I feel the
problems mainly lie in knowing exactly where to stash things like
ffmpeg, and whether or not I have done enough to enable it. Bear in mind
I'm not clueless, but at the same time I'm no expert, particularly at
Linux, and I really don't *want* to be, although I'm picking stuff up as
 I go along.

I used 'apt-get install ffmpeg' to get a binary downloaded, it appears
to be quite a small file but regardless, I don't know where to put it so
that the plugin works, nor do I know if it needs a chmod or similar to
make it work from the context of the LMS process. I had a good old
tootle around the Internet... Nowhere could I find where a Squeezeplug
 installation stashes its executables.

I have the bpa plugin installed (I think). It *looks* like I do when
 examining the LMS web interface.

Several people have reported that Sheevaplug with Arm5 doesn't have the
'grunt' to transcode the HLS stream to FLAC. After a bit of a struggle,
our Sheevaplug is streaming HLS more-or-less perfectly. I say
more-or-less; I have noticed one or two short drop-outs (a second or so)
over the last hour. I have even run three players simultaneously, all
streaming HLS-FLAC. CPU averages about 40-50% with one player although
it does hit 100% momentarily at times.

Sheevaplug is running Debian 7.1.

I'm using the standard Debian 7.1 ffmpeg (sudo apt-get install ffmpeg).
It announces itself thus:
ffmpeg version 0.8.16-6:0.8.16-1, Copyright (c) 2000-2014 the
Libav developers
built on Sep 17 2014 14:08:50 with gcc 4.6.3

Chaoticmike, you don't need to know where to install ffmpeg if you are
installing it with apt-get. It will be placed in /usr/bin and made
executable.

As everyone has noted, the standard ffmpeg does not die when you stop
playing the stream. Hence I needed Parky's playhls.pl wrapper (#2459 in
this thread) to keep the ffmpeg processes from proliferating. Actually,
I edited that to call ffmpeg instead of avconv. Not sure which is the
better choice.

The toughest problem to find, short bursts of playback followed by long
gaps, (also reported by @monxton), was nothing to do with arm5 or
'grunt'. It turned out that the first named DNS in resolv.conf had
failed. This had gone unnoticed because I guess most networking
applications will retry with a second DNS after a short timeout. It
appears that ffmpeg does not do so, or only does so after a long
timeout. Once I had eliminated the faulty DNS from resolv.conf, it
worked fine.

One other oddity. I tested HLS-PCM (disabling HLS-FLAC and HLS-MP3
from Settings, Advanced, File Types). It streamed successfully but the
playback seemed to be lowered in pitch by a few tones! Some kind of
sampling rate artefact??

Very pleased with the outcome of this story, thanks for all the help,
our Sheevaplug is back in service, and the Raspberry Pi 2 I bought in
expectation I needed more 'grunt' will be put to good use elsewhere :-)

2015-02-28 Thread Budge74

Big thanks to Man In A Van for this clear and concise guide to getting
this working again for me, and to Bonze for the effort of creating the
replacement opml files.

A couple of quick questions.

Is this a temporary fix? Are the BBC likely to shut down these streams
as well, in the near future?

Do you know which version of ffmpeg it is that you've linked to? It
appears to be based on 0.8, and the other thread suggests there may be
problems with this version.

I'm presuming the UK streams bonze created will enable me to listen to
live sport on 5 and sports extra?

Does ffmpeg transcode these streams all the time, or only when I choose
to listen to them? I'm a little concerned about the load on my rubbishy
server.

As I said at the start, big thanks to you guys, and very little thanks
to BBC and Logitech. Without people like yourselves, i'd have some very
expensive and very redundant hardware. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Batch / Mass rating?

2015-02-28 Thread DJanGo

Hi,

as Roland mentioned you need another Way.
I would take this route:
Make for each rating a simple textfile with the url/ place from
filesystem where the track is stored.

Code:

sqlite3 /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/persist.db
  .mode csv
  .output 010.csv
  select url from tracks_persistent where rating where rating=10;
  .output 020.csv
  select url from tracks_persistent where rating where rating=20;
  etc

After that you have to must use a mp3 tagger that can be handle via
commandline.
Cause of the ratings are stored into the mp3 tag itself. Oterwise a
clean and wipe/movin the tracks to another place would destroy the
rating.

 UserTextFrame: [Description: ALBUM RATING]
 4

Big question is batch blows or *ux?

Gruss

It seems not. The reason is that the BBC didn't realise that we use RTMP
streams, thinking they were for the BBC's own use. This emerged
yesterday in Andrew Scott's blog on the BBC website. He said that the
RTMP streams will be shut down, but they have not published a timeline.
So, it appears that we have some breathing space during which,

Like Owen Smith, Listen Again is working fine for me, so your situation
is rather puzzling. If you use the latest version of Triode's BBCiPlayer
plugin for LMS, it will route you via mediaselector/5 listings to the
RTMP streams that are still working. The Applet won't work because it's
routings are out of date.

Thanks guys. The BBC does indeed work in mysterious ways. It's a pity we
can't have the metadata for all the stations. I mean, how hard can it be
for the BBC to add it?

It's news to them that the RTMP streams are going to be killed off.

I’ve changed how I want to rate songs, so effectively need to “add one”
to the majority of my ratings (3-star songs become 4-star etc).

afaik, you can't do this with the standard LMS functionality.
If you are comfortable using SQL, you can directly manipulate the
persist DB (something like update tracks_persistent set rating=100 where
rating=80 etc.)
If not, with extgui4lms this should be fairly simple (do a custom search
for tracks with a specific rating, and rate the result of the search)
If you use TrackStat (which I don't, so this is just a theory), maybe
you could do a backup / searchreplace on the xml / restore

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)

2015-02-28 Thread PasTim

I think we have to assume Triode may not be back any time soon, if at
all. It would anyway be unwise to expect someone who has given enormous
amounts of his time to our collective benefit being willing to continue
doing so forever. Why should he (or indeed she)?

So the question becomes how can we help ourselves?

I don't know the answer, but I thought someone should pose the question
sooner rather than later.

There are still some, how can I put this, LMS 'elder statesmen' around
who might be able to indicate what skill sets are needed so that between
us we can work out how to fill the gaps in our knowledge regarding the
iPlayer (let alone many other invaluable plugins, squeezelite and so
on). I note that get_iplayer already seems to be able to use HLS (via
ffmpeg or avconv) even for 'listen again', according to
https://squarepenguin.co.uk/wiki/releasenotes/release291/ .
Unfortunately my coding skills predate much of what is in use now
(including OO) and I find myself unable to understand most of the LMS
code, so I am sorely lacking as a hacker. I am, however, happy to
contribute in any other ways, including performing alpha testing,
whenever I can.

Now it may be that I am being daft. It would not be the first time, and
won't be the last. So if others know better than I, just say so and
I'll keep quiet. :)

To be sure: I'm using a fairly recent version of LMS 7.9 and the latest

Sorry I didn't notice this thread until now.

It kind of feels like Apple have changed something so the added time is
no longer part of the iTunes Library xml file. If this is the case I'll
have to do an adjustment in the import logic in TrackStat so it defaults
to something else if the time isn't available in the iTunes Library xml
file.

I'll try to take a look at it during next couple of weeks.

So, it appears that we have some breathing space during which,
hopefully, Triode will appear with a solution for the HLS streams. Ah, I
hadn't realised that. Well, long may it (RTMP) continue. But lets
assume not and get something built for HLS.

I'm in a similar boat to you: I can code, but may not have the right

we do find that Triode is no more and need pool resources to make an HLS

EDIT: And, of course, SB Player used to work on this Fire TV box. Last
time I used it successfully was maybe two or three weeks ago.

Did you try uninstalling and re-installing SB Player? The changes
between the previous version and the current version is just about what
happens when the connection breaks and the player has to reconnect. It
shouldn't affect the actual connection itself.
