Last.fm is fed by user-generated tags -- they can either adjust to the
reality of what users generate, or they can fade into irrelevancy
after getting replaced by someone who can adjust to the reality of
what users generate. They may also chose to spend some time anf energy
trying to create and enforce some sort of standard, which is basically
a delaying tactic before succumbing to option two.

Every time I go to my user page and see their complaints about my
kid's audiobooks being tagged JK Rowling instead of J.K. Rowling, I am
further convinced that last.fm is in a headlong rush towards option
two.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] WeatherDateTime vs. Analog VU

I seem to recall this was an FAQ, but I can't find anything, so
apologies in advance

I have the excellent Weather, Date Time plugin set as my Not Playing

when I use the remote, but using the Web UI to transition from Not
Playing to Playing makes Analog VU overlay the last screen that
WeatherDateTime posted.

Is there a way to stop that from happening? Seems Analog VU ought to
wipe the screen before it starts doing anything.

large size).

Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about this in the plugin without

I have never encountered this problem myself...

which means I'm kinda SOL when it comes to adding tracks that aren't

dang, is Slimserver running on the NAS? That's pretty poor performance for a PC.

Anyway, what I'd do in this situation is use an automatic tag editor
to guess at the tags. Even if it's only 80 percent accurate, that
takes your problem set down to 2,000+ files, which should be easier to
manage via Browse Music Folder :)

 Hi Dudes!

 Can you vote on tracks with Last FM and can they be skipped?

 What buttons can you use on the Remote Control with Last.FM and what do
 they do?

yes. While it's playing, press the down arrow and you'll see Skip, Love,
Ban, Record to Profile, Discovery Mode, Change LastFM Station. Press right
to select one of these.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Lastfm Plugin question

2006-02-10 Thread Jack Coates

 Can somebody please tell me if there is a Lastfm plugin that enables
 Slimserver to act as a player that sends statitistics to an account.

Yes -- it's called SlimScrobbler. There's also a Last.FM player plugin.
Both are linked here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginsAudio

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Announcing radio tuner card plugin

2006-01-04 Thread Jack Coates

 If you are at all familiar with C, it should be pretty easy to just
 modify the ivtv-tuner-play code in the src directory to handle this.

 Let me know if you need help.

 I would happily include your changes in the distribution.

I wouldn't say familiar, but I did some experimenting and got some
interesting results. This device is controlled through the USB port, but
it returns audio through the line-in. So I tried this:
/* preliminary hack to read from audio line in -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] */
  if (-1 == (input_fd = open(input_device_name, O_RDONLY))) {
perror(radio);
fprintf(stderr, Cannot open %s for reading, trying audio device
instead\n,
 input_device_name);
sprintf(input_device_name,/dev/audio);
if (-1 == (input_fd = open(input_device_name, O_RDONLY))) {
  perror(radio);
  fprintf(stderr, Cannot open %s for reading either, giving up\n,
input_device_name);
}
close(tuner_fd);
exit(-1);
  }

which causes the radio to start playing through the server's sound card.
However, ivtv-tuner-play is obviously not reading from that source. I
tried a few different approaches as well, such as calling the device
directly via
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c, but all I managed to do was make /dev/radio0 quit
answering tuning requests from ivtv-tuner-play (kradio continues to work
fine, and is in fact necessary to close the radio after each experiment).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] ANNOUNCE: Plugin for much improved searching with the Squeezebox remote

2005-11-06 Thread Jack Coates

hickinbottoms wrote:

I'm pleased to announce that after about a year of development my plugin
that provides a much faster and more convenient form of searching with
the Squeezebox remote is now available. I call this the 'Lazy Search
Music' plugin.

The plugin allows you to search for artists, albums and songs in a
familar way (it can replace the SEARCH button completely), but removes
the need for you to 'multi-tap' each button on the remote control to
get at the letter you want, or to press the RIGHT button between
letters that are on the same button. It also 'searches as you type', so
you can see when you've entered enough characters to narrow your search
sufficiently.

The plugin is compatible with SlimServer 6.2 or later. This includes
the 'stock' 6.2 release as well as current nightly releases of 6.5.
I've tested it on Linux and Windows, and see no reason why it wouldn't
also work on Mac OS X.

The plugin, together with documentation on how to install and use it,
and details of how it works, is available from the here:
http://hickinbottom.demon.co.uk/slimserver/lazy-searching/lazy-searching2.htm

This plugin is one solution to the long-standing enhancement request
filed in bug #386 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=386).

I hope you find this plugin useful. I'd be very pleased to hear any
feedback and if anyone has any suggestions for improvements I'll do my
very best to accommodate them.

-Slim Devices: feel free to link to this plugin page from your
website's plugins page if you like. Even better, move the plugins page
into the wiki and we can edit it ourselves.-

I like it very much, thank you.

I put the file in the plugins directory, and restarted SlimServer, but

I should add that I'm running on Windows XP, if that makes any
difference.

Check the logfile and see if it's even loading. I seem to recall that
using plugins on Windows requires that you use the perl script version
instead of the .exe version...

I'm not sure where it is on Windows -- I'd guess either in your %TEMP%
or in the Program Files location.

What link above? Not sure what you're talking about.

Clearly, I need to learn perl. I used to be OK with C, once upon a

Not nearly as hard as C. I will warn you that the Slim Devices code is
over my head though... I'm reasonably proficient at the average 'connect
to a database and munge some data' type of script, but quickly ran into
trouble trying to work with Slimserver plugins. I figure I'm going to
have to use the CLI to do any extensions I want to do.

I'm keeping an eye on it, and will install it if this bug

Interestingly enough, the bug seems to be gone now that I'm not

accidentally fixed :)
