Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Loading music from SS to iPod/Shuffle

However, I'm a little stuck as to the best way to do this? I see an
iTunes Plug-in, but if I understand correctly, iTunes and SllimServer
must run on the same machine... that's not the case for me.

You could install Samba on the linux box, then mount your music directory
read-only to the Windows machines that need it for use with iTunes. Then
just tell iTunes that your music library is on the $M drive or whatever.
This is a _bit_ of a pain in the ass since iTunes doesn't add new music
automatically, you must manually rescan/import after you've added new music,
or use a tool like the iTunes Library Updater to do this for you.

I do something slightly different, as my music is on a raid5 filesystem on
my Windows box, which I network mount to my Linux box to run Slimserver on.
Same concept. I still mount the music drive to other clients for use with
iTunes.

iTunes is available for Windows and Mac OS X... Isn't OS X Unix-like?
Would that version run on Linux?

No.

OK... thanks for the info... I've been meaning to get samba working
eventually anyway maybe I'll take the opportunity to create a new
directory on my Linux/SS machine and make it r/w access to one or two
PCs running Windows/iTunes... then use iTunes to manage the music, and
SS to play it through my SB/Transporter etc.

And to think.. I used to listen to records with a sewing needle pushed
through a milk carton... :-)

I see iTunes has a WAV encoder, and an Apple Lossless... I'm assuming
that's proprietary... I'll stick with WAV...

Thanks,
Don
