I go with this, a 3.5" will need both 12v and 5v supply to function correctly (aiui ) ronnie Man in a van's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43627 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116148 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Here's the spec on max power the pi can supply to the drive controller: https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/raspberry-pi.html#maximum-power-output . So, just insure that your drive/controller is less than, say 80% of this. I think your (OP) reference to size is you currently have a 2.5 controller enclosure and you want to use a 3.5? If so, get a different controller, they are inexpensive (Ive used Vantec) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116148 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

A 3.5" external drive will probably need a dedicated power supply whereas most 2.5" do not. An HDD's an HDD so far as the RPi is concerned. > Also is there any benefit to doing this.? Depends on: - what RPi you have ie, whether it supports USB 3.0 (RPi 4) or not (other RPis) - the spec of the external drive you're currently using (ie, is it USB 3.0?). - If your RPi only supports USB 2.0, then there won't really be any benefit, as that will be the limiting factor, regardless of the HDD or enclosure specs. If your RPi supports USB 3.0 (ie, it's an RPi 4) and you get an enclosure with UASP SATA 3-to-USB 3.0 , then it will achieve faster data rates than an external HDD that's just USB 3.0. > Also dont I need a adaptor to use it due to its size.? Not quite sure what you mean. You just put the HDD in the enclosure and there'll be a USB cable that comes out of it which goes into your RPi Duet x 3, via various hi-fi.
