For exemple if you download CustomBrowse, you'll have a .zip with a
CustomBrowse folder inside. Just unzip this folder in the Plugins
directory, so that you have something like -C:\program
files\Squeezecenter\Server\Plugins\CustomBrowse\- with a bunch of files
 inside.

Then you have to restart Squeezecenter (either use stop squeezecenter
then start squeezecenter from the tray icon, or just reboot the whole
server), and your new plug-in should be there.

PS : Maybe you already know that, but a lot of useful plugins can be
downloaded through the Extension Downloader plugin, just by adding the
 adress of the 'repositories'
 (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Repositories) you
want, and selecting the plugins from the list.

I was aware of the repositories, and that sort of installation appears
to work pretty well. I tried to follow through the unzip process. I
put the zip file (invaders.zip) in the C:\program
files\squeezecenter\server\plugins\ (program name) folder and unzipped
it. The file extracted fine, but now I have all the above plus\invaders
plugin\plugins\invaders\jive\invaders.zip\ (and finally the files).
Obviously I am doing something simple wrong!!! Suggestions?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Installation Sticky??

2009-01-27 Thread BlueScreenJunky

I think funkstar didn't mean that the wiki is clear enough as it is, but
that if it is not clear enough (which is the case since you didn't find
the information you wanted, and I also have some difficulties
understanding some of it) the solution is NOT to add stickies on the
forum, but to improve the wiki itself.

The content would be exactly the same, but instead of being a sticky on
the forum it would be an article on the wiki (in the beginner's guides
for exemple), with at least 2 advantages :
-The wiki serves as the main source of documentation, so it's better if
everything is on there, instead of spread between the wiki and the
forum.
-It can be updated later on by anyone, even if the original poster is
not around anymore.

By the way, what's your problem with installing 3rd party plug-ins ?
Maybe we can help you out while we wait for someone to write a guide
;-) (I'd do it but I'm pretty new here so I might get things wrong)

Thanks BlueScreenJunky, thats exactly what I was meaning. Sure have a
sticky in the forums, but just put a link in it to the re-written Wiki
page.

At the moment, the SD card is only used to collecting logs and screen
dumps from the Controller or updating firmware when it can't be done
over the network. It may or may not have other uses in the future,
nothing has been said publicly, thats why there is little documentation
on it. The same goes for the external connector on the base of the
controller. Right now the only use it has is for internal development
and debugging. But who knows for the future.

Point taken!. My problem is that I am not entirely clear about what to
do with downloaded zip files for the controller. I understand that they
need to be un-zipped in a specific folder, although even that isn't
really clear. I think I have followed the directions correctly, but
the Applet Installer on the controller doesn't find the applications
(sigh).

SC plug-ins generally work fine, but I admit it took me a while to
figure out that they were only available if SC was selected as the
music source (duh!)

I appreciate your offer of some help. A previous post about installing
applets went unanswered.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Installation Sticky??

2009-01-27 Thread funkstar

Actual server plugins, or extensions, are now handled by the Extension
Downloader built into the server. I assume this will eventually handle
SqueezeOS applets and extensions as well. There has also been talk of
having walpapers in the wiki which can be browsed from your local
SqueezeCenter and added to your controller from there.

This all takes time to put together though and not everything the
developers want to do with SC can be done right now :)

Rest assured it will all get a lot easier over time. Increased
usability is a major goal and also a mojor project.

OK, so the Extension Downloader also deals with SqueezeOS files.

A sticky is a waste of time. If the information isn't all in the Wiki,
then it can be added and edited by anyone that creates an account. That
is the whole point of wiki's

The best way to hide relevant information is to put it in a forum
sticky :)

I hear you, but disagree. I have written stickeys for other forums
and have been gratified about how many people have expressed
appreciation for my effort. You may be expert enough to do all you
need with the existing documentation, but I am not - in spite of 20
plus years of using computers. Many Duet users could benefit from some
simple educational outreach -- if I knew how to do something why would I
not share that information with someone else? As it exists, much of the
wiki is written by experts for other experts. Logitech needs to make a
serious effort at upgrading their documentation. For example, how can
I use the SD card slot in the controller - if I can -- not to mention
the interface on the bottom of the remote?.
