I run a Plex server for video (files stored on same NAS as my music) and
access it on my TV using Plex app on Amazon Fire TV. I can of course
also watch on my phone, tablet or PC

Your NAS needs to be running a media server:
https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/packages/MediaServer

Which NAS do you have?

My current video player is a 2019 Nvidia Shield, but prior to that I
used LibreELEC on a pi 1 model B Rev2. This was an amazing, highly
optimized player for its time. It supported raw blu-ray rips and was
able to decode TrueHD and DTS-HD audio to PCM. The only thing it was
missing in that generation of media was Dolby Atmos. If you don't have
4K media files it would probably work just fine. I don't know if the
current generation of Pis is better at 4K playback.

+1 for Kodi.

Try using Kodi on top of this OS - LibreElec - as it's deliberately
lightweight for a Pi3 or better Pi4:

Not sure about its HD audio capabilities though, but it will get you
going to try it out.

if you want the solution to cope with passing through DTS HD or Dolby
True HD or Atmos Audio it gets much more awkward as not many apps pass
through the signal in my experience.

Kodi or Plex on a dedicated NUC (or similar) are the only ways I've
found to get full HD audio passthrough. Of the buy a box and it works
pretty much only the NVIDIA Shield will do HD Audio Passthrough

Kodi would do it, but my experience is that even the Pi4 is underpowered
for 180p full bit rate blu ray rips, and the interface is not as slick
as it could be

Kodi on a Firestick / Roku / google TV box would be slicker

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Is there some Video Player Software similar to PiCorePlayer ?

2022-12-28 Thread Apesbrain

If your NAS has an available media server plugin, an inexpensive Roku
player will render video via DLNA/UPnP to any TV having an available
HDMI input using its "Roku Media Player" app. If you have a smart TV,
you might find it has a DLNA/UPnP player available in its app store.

I'm not aware of any Raspberry Pi video server solution as "turnkey" as
piCorePlayer is for audio.

You might check out OSMC for Raspberry Pi:
https://osmc.tv/

OSMC is based on Kodi which is a well-established media server that also
supports DLNA/UPnP. If your smart TV has a DLNA/UPnP media player app,
you should be good. Or, use a Roku as above.

If you like Plex as a media server, installing it to a RPi is not that
difficult:
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/raspberry-pi-plex-media-server/

Many smart TVs have a Plex player available in their app store. Roku
has one also.

I'd recommend you use a RPi 4 for this as serving video generally takes
more horsepower than does audio.
