Still good to know installing poppler will save time. I'm evaluating some changes that might give us the best of both worlds. My main concern right now is the potential for errors by divergence between bulk builds and normal builds. The technical issue being solved is that packages built by bulk and by hand must be identical, and the pkgpath used to reach the dependency is recorded in the package. By asking the dependent package its actual true path, I can normalize paths and strip pseudo flavors. So, it's complicated...

ghc-7.0.4 build error on -current

I'm guessing there's no quick and easy way for a bulk build environment variable to be picked up as bulk builders and maintainers are more likely to know to a greater depth, what they are doing? Still good to know installing poppler will save time. To be a bit clearer: this has long been a (small) problem. - if we do make things faster for the casual tinkerer, then ports bulk builds go slower. - ports bulks going slower is a bad thing, as basically less bulks get done, and the main complain in this mail happens: slower = less frequent snapshots. - More flavors = bad. Conflicts may happen, even break bulk builds (dpb is smart, but it can't recover automatically if two thingies want distinct conflicting dependencies to build). There are countless examples of places where we moved flavors into multi-packages, or removed flavors altogether. Flavors are bad for the average user. Don't yell at me ! let me explain first. The average user is supposed to install binary packages. For flavors to make sense, there has to exist a binary package with the corresponding flavor. Thus, more build time. In case of too-many-flavors-disease, the exact flavor combination YOU need will most often not exist as a binary package, as per Murphy's law. Yes/no flavors ARE exponential in nature. If you have 4 flavors, we must provide 16 packages to cover them all (imagine each package taking an hour to build). So, we have multi-packages, AND pseudo-flavors for the tinkerer, so that you can build stuff faster if need be (requires a bit of tinkering). Bottom-line, it's a political choice. We chose long ago to favor binary packages over tinkering. One set of standard tools. Standard binary packages that people can install and update. This is not the problem you're looking for. Making tinkering easier is not the solution. ESPECIALLY if you end up complaining about the lack of snapshots. Streamlining the process even more so we get very frequent snapshots is the solution. And since I'm not consistent: this long nagging issue of not being able to use pseudo-flavors in such a context might come to an end soon. Film at 11.

WIP chicken port
Hi, I just commited my WIP chicken port to openbsd-wip repo. (https://github.com/jasperla/openbsd-wip/tree/master/lang/chicken) The port builds OK but issuing make plist fails with bogus element outside prefix messages. Also, man pages seem to go to /usr/local/share/man and I haven't yet figured how to handle the shared library. Any help and suggestions are welcome. Timo
sysutils/rsyslog fixes
* Remove a hidden build dependency and unsatisfied run dependency on libgcrypt. GnuTLS = 2.12 does not depend on libgcrypt any longer. * Don't add filename defines to CPPFLAGS; there are quoting problems and gcc4 ends up warning, gcc3 aborts. Move the setting to Makefile.in. * The database subpackages shouldn't depend on the exact REVISION of the main package. ok? This still doesn't build on alpha due to undefined atomic ops. On Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 09:11:55AM +0200, Rafael Sadowski wrote: I think the current ghc port has problemes with -current (and the current version of libc and libm). Yes, that's a problem with every port dealing with binary boostrappers. The best rule for dealing with such ports is: do not remove old shared libraries after updating OpenBSD. Of course this doesn't help for fresh installs. I'm planning to prepare new ghc bootstrapping binaries on the weekend after s2k11 (wich i can't attend, unfortunately), i.e. september 24th/25th. I'll also need some fellow developer to do this for i386 (because I only have an amd64 installation here) and a lot of Haskell ports will need pkgname bumps (ghc still suffers from some broken optimizations introducing ABI changes when the bootstrapping compiler gets a different version number or name). Ciao, Kili

Re: Node.js port - v8 compile flag issue
On 2011-09-11, Devin Ceartas nacred...@gmail.com wrote: I've run into the issue discussed in many places online where Node.js addons require symbols in the v8 JavaScript engine to be exposed. There is a description of the solution needed in the FreeBSD ports at http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=157875 What is necessary in our ports system to issue this compile directive in to v8? When I look at the Makefile for /usr/ports/www/node (for a snapshot of current from a couple of weeks ago) I don't see any SCONS directives there; I'm not sure how the handling of dependencies is done in our OpenBSD ports system, i.e. where the SCONS directive should be placed. OpenBSD's node port uses the internal copy of v8, not a separate shared copy as done in FreeBSD. Only mention of visibility in build log is:- /usr/obj/i386/node-0.4.9/bin/python /usr/obj/i386/node-0.4.9/node-v0.4.9/tools/scons/scons.py -j 1 -C /usr/obj/i386/node-0.4.9/node-v0.4.9/build/default/ -Y /usr/obj/i386/node-0.4.9/node-v0.4.9/deps/v8 visibility=default mode=release arch=ia32 toolchain=gcc library=static snapshot=on If anyone is going to look at it, they probably will want some steps to reproduce other than that in the FreeBSD PR (i.e. something that doesn't involve running a random downloaded sh script as root ;-)
