Re: packing list libs vs libs from packages
On Thu, Sep 22, 2011 at 01:05:15AM +0200, frantisek holop wrote: please forgive my ignorance. today i have stumbled upon the following error while trying to compile and install a certain package, a deed i very rarely do: Error: Libraries in packing-lists in the ports tree and libraries from installed packages don't match this is something a bit more recentish, because i remember doing the same thing in the past and there was no such level of strictness. i think i understand the need to have exact library info at compile time and enforce it like this, but i also always looked at the ports infrastructure as a very nifty flexible compiling aid -- is it really an error when i want to compile for example a particular daemon and link it against my current libraries in /usr/local/lib, libs that might lag a couple of versions behind cvs but still perfectly fulfill their requirement? is it possible to override this? is it totally undesirable? There was some large cleanup of the way dependencies are handled a bit before 5.0. This specific check forces things to be consistent, thus resulting in better binary snapshots. And since our focus is still to provide better releases... Now, for the longer story. Before 5.0, dependencies were evaluated in a very strange way. For a lib depends, there was a line that said where the libraries could come from, and it said something like @depend cat/dir:stem-*:stem-1.0.5 and the library itself would give @wantlib mylib.15.0 Now, it's much better if the stem-1.0.5 and the mylib.15.0 snippet come from the same place, especially since they become a part of the full package signature that's used to decided when to update or not. A long time ago, we decided that stem-1.0.5 would have to come from the ports tree proper. Using the installed package itself would cause issues, as it could be stem-1.0.5, or stem-1.0.5-some_flavor... mind you, it's a *good* thing you could install either or them and build happily, but it's a bad thing to record either of them in the package, because then you don't have consistent signatures, and you don't know how to update. In the past, the library version came only from the *installed* package, and that was a mistake, because you could end up writing a package that would want mylib.14.0 (installed), and that would say that stem-1.0.5 would provide it (whereas stem-1.0.5 would provide mylib.15.0). So, getting that info from the ports tree would match stem-1.0.5... but not necessarily what's been compiled again. In the end, the current code gets the info from both, and verify that they matches. Most people are happy with the check. Heck, it catches actual discrepancies. There is no simple way to make things better, e.g., I don't know how to waive the check and not to run into those bugs and lower the quality of binary packages (or: I don't know how to design things so as not to need the check, as you can see, there's a whole series of design decisions that lead to that code being what it is, and you can't just remove the problem by removing the check). If you really must, you can set PKG_CREATE_NO_CHECKS to Yes, and it will not do the check. But you have to realize you are creating low quality packages that will potentially not install/update correctly over the long term don't come yelling at me if pkg_add -u is semi-functional after that.

Indeed the file .require_paths is not created / installed, and is not present in the binary package from ftp.openbsd.org either. So the PLIST is lying ? My guess is you upgraded your version of rubygems. Updated versions of rubygems no longer produce the .require_paths file. Our ruby 1.8 and 1.9 ports use rubygems 1.3.7, which still produce these files. The jruby and rubinius ports use updated versions of rubygems, but I backported support for .require_paths for those ports so that the same PLIST can be used for all interpreters. When ruby 1.9.3 is released, the .require_paths stuff will probably go away, but for now it is still needed. I did upgrade rubygems (gem update --system), so that makes sense. Thank you for this explanation. Are you sure it isn't present? Without the file, the port won't package, so I doubt that it is missing from the package on ftp.openbsd.org. I just checked and it is definitely there: $ tar ztf ruby-rmagick-2.9.0p3.tgz | fgrep require_paths lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rmagick-2.9.0/.require_paths After you install the package: $ cat /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rmagick-2.9.0/.require_paths lib ext bin Indeed.. Thanks ! -- Thomas de Grivel

Re: UPDATE: texlive 2011
You don't run make plist for texlive. The plist is scripted. Perhaps the diff is busted, it works mega clean here. On Sep 22, 2011 9:04 PM, Amit Kulkarni amitk...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Here is a WIP update of texlive 2011. I say WIP because it is only tested amd64 and the upgrade paths have not been tested. I post it because I know there are a brave few who would like to test. If you would like to help, please reply to the thread with test results and bugs. Can someone try this on PPC? Cheers gzip attached ( 32k lines of diff ). Edd, I think you forgot to do make plist...can you double check? i am on amd64... thanks

minor issues with python-2.7
(redirected here by maintainer) Hi, I've having some minor problems with python-2.7 1. pdb throws an exception at the end of a debugging session: sprawl$ cat debug.py import pdb pdb.set_trace() a = 1 b = 2 sum = a + b sprawl$ python2.7 debug.py /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(4)module() - a = 1 (Pdb) n /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(5)module() - b = 2 (Pdb) n /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(6)module() - sum = a + b (Pdb) n --Return-- /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(6)module()-None - sum = a + b (Pdb) n Exception AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'path' in function _remove at 0x7e6ac0d4 ignored It works fine in 2.5: sprawl$ python2.5 debug.py /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(4)module() - a = 1 (Pdb) n /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(5)module() - b = 2 (Pdb) n /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(6)module() - sum = a + b (Pdb) n --Return-- /home/anders/code/random/debug.py(6)module()-None - sum = a + b (Pdb) n 2. Signal handling doesn't work on my system in CherryPy (3.2.0 but probably others) using py2.7. It works fine using py2.5 on this system, it worked fine on py2.6 before py2.6 was removed, and it works fine for me and many others on py2.7 on other systems (windows and various linux). The same situation holds for both the port (py-cherrypy) and CherryPy installed via easy_install. For testing here I'm using one of the tutorial files included with cherrypy, but the same situation happens with all of my cherrypy applications. I think this is an issue with python and not cherrypy. To replicate: (with py2.5: signals caught fine. here just ^C from keyboard, but using kill also works) sprawl$ cd /usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/cherrypy/tutorial sprawl$ python2.5 tut01_helloworld.py [22/Sep/2011:12:02:07] ENGINE Listening for SIGHUP.
