Stuff
This is very abbreviated: Just got back from a week or so in Austin. Got some good work on the movie done, etc. In particular, I got The Damnations Tx (the TX will drop some day when the 'limitation', or something, runs out on the name Damnation) playing in front of 3000-4000 people. Then, I got them the next night playing in front of a handfull in San Antonio. Lot's of Gourds, Damnations, Prescott Curlywulf, and otherwise magic last week. I regret missing the Bone at the Hole, but seeing The Gourds finally get "Ghosts of Hallelujah" more than half right was probably worth it. Next up is a review of GHOSTS for you guys. I don't think HALF MAD needs my support. Did anybody else see the most recent PEOPLE magazine? --Matt Cook P.S.-Speaking of hype, what is up with Bare Jr.? Knoxville and the Shane Shack
Hey everybody, It's been just over a week and Greta and I are still buzzin' from our visit to the Shane Shack and WDVX's Studio C. We don't have to tell y'all P2ers what a cool guy Mr. Rhyne is, but we did want to let everyone know what fun we had and just how proud we are to put East Tennessee's "littlest mobile broadcast booth" on our resume. What a great treat. Shane treated us like the royalty we ain't! For all you touring/giging slobs like us, Kieth at the Bird's Eye View did way right by us and the room/sound/stage was professional AND very friendly. Again, thanks for all the support Shane, and all the information, inspiration, aggravation, and tarnation we get from P2. Next Sunday, Valentines Day, I'll be out listening to Peter Rowan, Tony Rice and Tennessee Valley Authority, so this is my only chance to do this theme. This's really a yank, as I know better than anybody how many songs about these subjects live in our library. Probably could do ten more shows without repeating anything. Telephones went wild. Need Springsteen sheet music
I'm needing sheet music for Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" from the 1992 "Lucky Town" album for my wedding this summer. My bride's musical tastes are a bit more upscale, and I figured my musical choice needs to be a little rootsier and down-to-earth. (Besides, I've always loved that song.) If you have any ideas where to retrieve any sheet music for it, please let me know off-list. Thanks in advance, Ron Warnick
Re: There must be an answer to this one...
I've been noting Joe Gracey's sterling defence of the Mac (I've got one too), but I wonder if it's the fault of this machine (an LC 520) that I when I get the Digest all Mike Hays' and Buddy Rocket's posts come twice - one in English and one in complete, utter, and total gibberish. The English ones are usually thoughtful and/or amusing; the others are a pain in the butt 'cos you've gotta scroll through them, and they're always MUCH longer than the English version. Is there a computer whiz who can explain, in English, why this is so and what, if anything, I can do about it. Cheers, Richard NP Ian Tyson, Lost Herd. The answer is that there is nothing you can do, the fault lies with the poster of the message. Some mail systems, like Outlook Express, seem to be configured by default to send an html language version of messages in addition to the normal plain text version. This can be reset by selecting "plain text only" somewhere in the configuration. Although a waste of bandwidth, the html version can be easily ignored in a single message as it will appear as an attachment. But with the digest everything gets combined into one long message so we have to scroll past them each time. Phil. -- Phil Dennison ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Re: Mandy Barnett
I'd love to get it but the damn thing has been put back to April thank you very much. They would rush release Mindy mcCready but a talent such as Mandy goes on the backburner. Why is it so? (I'm getting lucky today) If you hate where country has gone to, and you like (or at least don't mind) Owen Bradley production with background singers and strings and you LOVE a big beautiful female voice then get Mandy Barnett's "I've Got A Right To Cry" this is new old-fashioned traditional (whatever that is) country at its best (in aural paradise) Mark M. ~

3/6 Greg Trooper House Concert Now On Sale
WXDU's radio show, Topsoil, is presenting another intimate house concert at Pine Hill Farm in Durham with country singer-songwriter and Koch recording artist, Greg Trooper on Saturday, March 6 at 8pm. These concerts are organized so that we all chip in to pay the artist for the performance. We will be asking for a donation of $10 per person and you can save a spot in advance by writing Steve Gardner at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or by calling 919-304-2693. I will then let you know how to complete the reservation. This concert will probably sell out in a matter of hours, not days. The emails will be time-marked and I will offer the spots on a first-come first-serve basis. Reservations are NOW on sale for this show. == Part One: Who is Greg Trooper? Part Two: What is Pine Hill Farm? Part Three: Where is Pine Hill Farm? Part Four: What is Topsoil? == Part One: Who is Greg Trooper? First a personal note. Greg Trooper's latest CD "Popular Demons" was my #3 CD of the year last year, and that was with very tough competition. The sheer power of this CD, and my love for the songs on it, plus some encouragement from a friend at work, caused me to seek Greg out. Luckily I called just as he was planning a tour through the area. I know this is short notice, but really, you've got to go to this show. I saw Greg recently in Lake Tahoe, CA and he was awesome. If you liked the country singer-songwriters I've had in the past like Slaid Cleaves, Kevin Gordon and Robbie Fulks you'll definitely want to get a spot at this show. And now a short overview taken from the official Greg Trooper website: http://earth.vol.com/~jessi11/index.htm His first three albums, We Won't Dance, Everywhere, and Noises In The Hallway (produced by E-Street Band member Garry Tallent) intrigued such artists as Steve Earle, Vince Gill, and Billy Bragg, all of whom have covered Trooper's songs. Touring extensively with performers such as Joe Ely and Roseanne Cash,Trooper also established a reputation as an exuberant performer whose wit and vigor charmed audiences across the country and throughout Europe. Trooper has built a strong following with fans and other musicians. when it came time to record Popular Demons, Trooper tapped his old friend, alt-country mainstay Buddy Miller to produce. "He's my secret weapon," Trooper says, "not only are his aesthetics in line with mine, he's also a great guy." Trooper mentions Miller's focus, which may explain the overall feel of economy on the record: every guitar riff, every drum fill serves a purpose. Silence is an important part of the aural landscape and each instrument has room to breathe. Recorded at Miller's Dogtown Studio, Popular Demons is a record Greg Trooper always knew he had in him: "the treatment and the elements are something I've always wanted to do, I had no inhibitions - and nobody breathing down my neck asking ,"Who's going to buy this album?" In addition to the core of Trooper's band- guitarist Duane Jarvis, drummer Rick Schell, and bassist Greg Shirley-Popular Demons features appearances by Tammy Rogers on violin, al Perkins on dobro, and Emmylou Harris and Julie Miller on background vocals. Miller contributed lots of guitar work and some backing vocals himself, Steve Earle joins Trooper for a duet on the bonus track, a cover of Dylan's " I'll Keep It With Mine." Part Two: What is Pine Hill Farm? Pine Hill Farm is the name of a ranch house in Durham a few miles north of Chapel Hill. (directions below) I started up these house concerts with one of the members of that household, Bill Tolbert. Together we try to bring the music that we want to see to town. Pine Hill Farm presents shows in a totally acoustic setting, meaning no amplification. The shows are held in the living room and the acoustics are wonderful. There is no better way to see a show. Part Three: Where is Pine Hill Farm? Directions: To get to Pine Hill Farm, take Exit 266 from I-40 onto 86N (a.k.a. Airport Rd). Go right on Mt. Sinai Rd. and after 2.5 miles, take a left onto Murphy School Rd. The house is down the second driveway on the right - park on Murphy School Rd. past the driveway and enjoy. Part Four: What is Topsoil? Topsoil is my radio show on every Sunday from noon to 3pm on WXDU, 88.7FM. I play a century of twang. For more information on the show or my house concerts check out my website, www.topsoil.net. Cheers!! The daughters have formally requested that Wynette's body be exhumed and an autopsy performed, according to Nashville's Channel 5. Wynette's personal physician signed her death certificate and listed a blood clot in her lung as the cause of death. No autopsy was performed and the Nashville Medical Examiner's office didn't investigate the death. Forensic experts say that only an autopsy can confirm a blood clot as a cause of death. Reportedly, the singer was taking prescription drugs at the time of her death. News reports also say that the daughters want to know if the drugs were a factor in her death. Also being questioned are events which may or may not have taken place on the day of Wynette's death last April. Music row was humming last week with the news that Trisha Yearwood has replaced long-time manager Ken Kragen with her long-time publicist, Nancy Russell. Kragen is a high-profile power figure in the entertainment industry- the country music side is just part of his kingdom. Yearwood has a reputation for keeping emotion out of her business decisions. RE: Richard Thompson
-Original Message- I'm happy to see that there are others who rank _Pour Down Like Silver_ above _Shoot Out the Lights_, as I do--not that either record is any too shabby, of course, just that _SOTL_ has always been the consensus critical fave, and _PDLS_ has been unjustly ignored, I think. [Matt Benz] I like Hokey Pokey.
RE: Richard Thompson
It's also worth keeping in mind that RT has denied that any song on _Across a Crowded Room_ is about Linda in any way. He knows best, of course, but anyone who's heard that record can't help thinking that he's not being entirely truthful there (which is his prerogative, of course). "When the Spell Is Broken"? "You Don't Say"? "She Twists the Knife Again"? Sure, he just happened to spin out a string of bitter end-of-love songs shortly after going through a bitter and acrimonious divorce. Right. [Matt Benz] But it *was* Richard who broke up the marriage after meeting another woman, so I'm sure he wasn't the really bitter one.

RE: K.D. Lang
[Matt Benz] I have a hard time swallowing the theory that country music rejected Lang cos she campaigned -briefly, we're talking one ad campaign here- against eating beef. I know there was a uproar among the beef industry, but if a music scene turned on her based on that, well, then who needs said industry? Silly, rilly.
Cold Mountain CD
Jim Nelson said about the Cold Mountain CD that will be packaged with the book: That's a great deal for those of us who've had the book for over a year now... Like I said. You people are crabby. Jim Caliguri said about the CD being sold only with the book (starting in March): Is this right? I received a copy of the record today, but no book. I've heard raves from other sources about it, but has anybody else here read it? Just looking for advice. And while I'm generally not a big Tim O'Brien fan, I think I'm gonna go slip that disc in the player right now. That might be because you are a reviewer or something. The CD is only going to be sold with the book in stores, but you will be able to get it seperately if you see one of those guys in concert (I'm guessin'). I think those of you, like Jim, who aren't big Tim O'Brien fans should really give this CD a listen (when it comes out). If you want an idea of what it sounds like listen to Dirk Powell's CD "If I Should Go 10,000 Miles" on Rounder (specifically, the tracks Tim sings on). Remember too, that this isn't a Tim O'Brien CD. It's a Tim O'Brien, Dirk Powell and John Hermann CD. Those other two shouldn't be overlooked because they kick butt. Disclaimer: This CD has nothing to do with Sugar Hill. I just love it. steve

Playlist: Tennessee Saturday Night 2/6/99
Howdy, I was muchly pleased with this week's rendition of a Tennessee Saturday Night and, quite immodestly, I'd say that the phone calls received during the show indicate that this week's play list was one of the more popular ones I've put together. Quick side note: I stumbled upon a great disc at the Disc Exchange on Saturday morning. "Hillbilly Boogie," from Columbia Legacy ca. 1994. Don says: There ain't a lot of similarities between the two, near as I can tell. Generally true, though there's a similarity of vocal approach - in the high end of their ranges, open-throated, both liked to hold high notes with a sort of wail - that's wotrth noting. RE: Cold Mountain CD
Jim Nelson said about the Cold Mountain CD that will be packaged with the book: That's a great deal for those of us who've had the book for over a year now... Like I said. You people are crabby. [Matt Benz] Really. They're only doing a cd based on the book because the book is popular. If the book sold in p2 amounts, we sure as well wouldn't see a cd. And therefore? FWIW, everyone I know who's heard this CD has gone on about at some length (my minor-weasel copy just arrived this a.m., so I'm just now getting a first listen). I don't understand where the problem is - well, I mean, I guess I do as far as those folks who don't want to buy another copy of the book just to get the CD are concerned (though I will guarandamntee you you'll be able to get it from O'Brien et.al. at PAs), but beyond that, where's the beef? It's great old-time music, at least the first few cuts are, so who cares that they made the album because of a popular book? It should happen more often - you know, like, new people hearing you play the music you want to. What are you complaining about, Matt? On the other hand, Matt's absolutely right to whine about a dearth of Damnations, TX advances; what's going on, some kind of boycott of The Heartland? Right around here is where the real tastemakers, like Mark Wyatt and Dave Purcell, are. Jon Weisberger Kenton County, KY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://home.fuse.net/jonweisberger/

By its very nature, somebody singing your song, I think, is delightful. And in some cases, is musically [revelatory]. Ronstadt's version of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is vastly better than mine. It's much more like the song. And Hank's version of that song was really great. RE: Cold Mountain CD
Um...I don't think *I* was doing the complaining here. I was refering to this: Jim Nelson said about the Cold Mountain CD that will be packaged with the book: That's a great deal for those of us who've had the book for over a year now... [Matt Benz] Them ain't my words. My less than clear point inn reply to the above is that *of course* there wasn't a cd with the first runs of the book: it had to become a runaway best seller to justify new products associated with the book. The cd exists because of the interest created by sales. So those who bought the book way back when should hold their beefs. And get the cd anyway. Right? On the other hand, Matt's absolutely right to whine about a dearth of Damnations, TX advances; what's going on, some kind of boycott of The Heartland? Right around here is where the real tastemakers, like Mark Wyatt and Dave Purcell, are. [Matt Benz] What he said!

[Matt Benz] Ah, I see the misunderstanding: Again, I'm not complaining about this; I agree, it's great to see this kind of interest in offshoots, etc...Just pointing out the obvious marketing issues, not bitching about the way the disc was made. Does any of this make sense?

RE: Cold Mountain CD
By the way, as far as buying the thing goes, a healthy portion of the one-sheet is devoted to how clearances were obtained, etc. in order to put out the CD, including the following passage: "In fact, the terms with MGM-UA stipulate that the CD can only be sold packaged with the novel, so the consumer that purchases Songs From The Mountain will get a free copy of Cold Mountain in paperback" which would seem to suggest that marketing distribution (DNA) will be CD-oriented, not book-orientedl, so instead of buying the book again just to get the CD, you can think of it as just buying the CD and getting an extra copy of the book g. P2 at the NEA- Hillbilly IDOL
Dear Lovers of Fine Music, I just wanted to let all of the nice folks who will be attending or performing at the NEA Extravaganza that Hillbilly IDOL will be there too. We are playing a set at Robert's Western Wear on Sat. at 10:00pm. Looks like a nice lineup for the evening and doggonit we're happy to be a part of it. The Steam Donkeys start out the night followed by Kristi Rose, Hllbilly IDOL, the Billy Goats, and finishing out the evening is Jim Roll. We will also be doing a set at the EXIT INN on the following Tues. as part of Billy Block's Western Beat Roots Revival. Nice lineup on that evening too. The Felsons from Scotland, ( not all of them actually, the Mavericks rhythm section is filling in for Felsons bass and drums) , Suzy Bogguss and somebody else, who unfortunately, I continue to forget. The house band kicks off the evening in Opry style accompanying a number of cameos by select performers. This is a killer band and is loaded with heavy hitters including pedal steeler Mike Daly (Hank Jr., Gibson Miller, Allison Moore's band, etc.) and Redd Volkart( Telewacker with the Hag ). The Roots Revival show is pretty darn cool and if folks are interested in finding out a bit more about it Billy Block has some nice stuff on the web. Sorry, I don't have the address right in front of me. Billy Block's Western Beat Roots Revival should get you close on a decent search . Ladies and gentlemen, if you have the opportunity to catch either of our sets please introduce yourself. We look forward to meeting and drinking with other distinguished, discriminating, musical aficionados such as yourselves. sincerely, Al Moss (the other)

Re: Donald Lindley
Feb. 3 -- here's the obit: Friends remember prowess of drummer Donald Lindley By Rebecca Thatcher American-Statesman Staff Published: Feb. 4, 1999 Donald Lindley, a master drummer who played for Lucinda Williams, Joe Ely and many other musicians, died Wednesday afternoon of lung cancer at Seton Medical Center. He was 47. Friends remembered him Wednesday night as a brilliant drummer who toured relentlessly and yet was a much-sought-after studio musician. "He never forgot a song," said singer Rosie Flores, who performed with Lindley for many years. "He was always willing to try to come up with a part that made you happy." Lindley was born in Phoenix and worked in Detroit, Connecticut and Los Angeles before settling in Austin six years ago. He toured Italy with Joe Ely in October and went to England with Lucinda Williams in November. He was diagnosed with cancer in December, said his wife, Kathy Lindley. "We were just blessed that he was so strong," she said. "He must have been ill for quite some time." Kathy Lindley said they met in Los Angeles and were married during the South by Southwest music festival 11 years ago. Donald Lindley loved to shop and would bring gifts from all of his tours, she said. Lucinda Hinton-Schwan, an Austin actress and stuntwoman who has known Lindley for many years, said Lindley was as entertaining to watch as he was wonderful to listen to. "They called him the clock because he always kept perfect time," she said. "He is one of the greatest . . . and as a person . . . a sweetheart. He was too young for this to happen to." Clifford Antone, whose blues club has played host to Joe Ely's band, said Lindley was especially well-known for his studio work. "He was very versatile," Antone said. "He fit that type of singer-songwriter very well. He understood the feeling that they needed. It's called getting in the pocket." Besides his wife, Lindley leaves his 9-year-old-son, Jesse Brian Lindley. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints at 5201 Convict Hill Road. Another service will be Monday in Phoenix.

New purchases and SV query
I just got some new CDs based on recommendations that I have read here. I particularly want to add to the heap of praise being poured on Cisco's "Wishing You Well from the Pink Motel." This is a very good record... I am listening to Lou Ford's "Sad, but Familiar," about which someone asked recently. I have to say that I am very surprised with it. It is not what I was expecting. Judging from their excellent contribution to Revival II i was expecting something a bit louder and more raw. Even the same song, "So Far Gone," lacks a bit of the power that the RII version has. The album isn't bad, and I expect it to grow on me...just surprised by it. About Son Volt...I am wondering if anyone who may have been at the Raleigh show on Friday was familiar with the song they played in the middle of "Chickamauga," or if anyone knows where I might be able to find setlists for the current tour... Had to use that subject line, now that the King of Bluegrass is in the hospital... Florida music landmarks and musicians
I'm heading to North Florida and perhaps central Florida for work on my book for a four day stint this weekend. I know there aren't a lot of southerners on this list but there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks. I've got a list of sites and stuff to look for but thought others here might have recommendations. I've got things related to Gram Parsons, Gamble Rogers, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynrd, Jim Morrison, Jim Stafford and that's all I can think of without consulting my list. And you all know I have a really bad memory so . . . I'd welcome any Florida sites, Florida musicians past or present (we're not including South Florida) so anything Tampa north. Has anyone ever stayed at Gram's Place? The BB in Tampa that's supposed to have Gram Parson's memorabilia, etc? I appreciate any tips. Thanks, Deb
Cold Mountain CD
Like I said. You people are crabby. [Matt Benz] Really. They're only doing a cd based on the book because the book is popular. If the book sold in p2 amounts, we sure as well wouldn't see a cd. Remember that piece of literary trash "Bridges of Yoknapatawpha County"? There was a cd for that, too (with the "author" singing. Yikes!) when it became huge. When's the Cold Mountain movie coming out? [Me] Um, you're wrong. First of all, Dirk Powell got the idea of this CD over a year ago before the book was a smash. He read it, liked it, and asked me how to get in touch with Charles, a local author. Secondly, the movie is coming out, but when that happens they can no longer sell the CD grouped with the bookso they aren't just jumping on the gravy train. steve

Re: Dylan (long)
If you are someone who doesn't give a rat's ass about Bob Dylan go ahead and delete this. If, on the other hand, you happen to have a few--or a lot--of the old man's recordings in your collection, check it out. I went to see Bob last night in Birmingham, and though I was expectant, I have to admit I was very skeptical. I mean, I first became a fan of the guy about twelve years ago, but this is my first time seeing him in person. With the stories I'd heard and the TV appearances I'd seen, I wasn't exactly filled with confidence on coughing up my dough, you know. But his last few records have been understated gems and recent reports have all been positive, so I figured, what the hell. Well, after last night I am converted anew. His voice was in fine form, but it wasn't just about hitting notes, bub--but, I gotta say, he did do that. No, it was about phrasing and how a real performer can remake the familiar. It was during "The Times They Are A-Changin," in fact, when I realized that he was making absolutely fresh what I had thought I never wanted to hear again. How many times had I heard that song on the radio and turned the channel in familiar boredom?? Well, he did it and did it wonderfully. And "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" was the same. Man!! He would turn corners around words that I didn't know were there and sneak up on me, turning old chestnuts, including his Jimmie Rodgers cover, into something . . . relevant. And that was what impressed me about the old guy. He was relevant again, and I found that to be mesmerizing. Bob Dylan could coast on the ducats of nostalgia--Lord knows he has been accused of that by some folks--but here he was with a stand-up bass player, mandolin/pedal steel player, and a great country picker ripping into "Honky Tonk Blues." This is Hank Williams country, by the way, but last night Bob made that brilliant song his very own. There he was on-stage, smiling, knowing that we were helplessly in his spell, and we--and him, I'd like to think--loved every goddamed second of it. And when he did "Not Fade Away," he was not only paying homage to Buddy, of course--and the increasingly irrelevant Stones--but it was the Garcia/Dead arrangement, so all of us, not just the numerous hippies in the crowd, were spinning in circles. And then he was gone, leaving me, and us, wanting more. "Not fade away." A brilliant choice to end the show with. It was as though he was letting all of us know that not even death is gonna kick his ass. He's going to make damn well sure he sticks around for awhile, and we just better get used to it. But, folks, he isn't. He will fade away. Last year's death scare seems to have lit a fire under his ass, and guess what? We get to benefit. But Bob ain't getting any younger. And, given the guy's eccentric career, there is no telling when he may become filled with rock 'n' roll ennui and start mailin 'em in again. So, for those of you who count yourselves among his fans, do yourselves a favor. Go see him. He is truly at the top of his game and who knows how long it will last. Last night was one of the most impressive nights of music I've ever experienced (Setzer was a ball, I should add), and I wanted it to keep on going. But, it won't. Someday there won't be anymore Bob shows, just like there ain't anymore Monroe shows and Townes' shows. Don't miss him. Lance . . .
RE: Florida music landmarks and musicians
I'm not sure what the go is with Gram's place - a friend of mine went there and said it seemed "a little weird" and has since refused to elaborate - I could ask her again - I have heard that the place is promoted as being "gay-safe and friendly" and is modelled on Amsterdam-style holiday resorts. I'm not trying to suggest any kind of anti-gay bias at all - there's a website for it somewhere if you wanted to check it out for yourself - i think it's linked to Larry Klug's Gram homepage. Howdy, I don't have a lot of time to play reindeer games right now... I'm on my way to WDVX to fill in at the last minute for another DJ, but I felt compelled to comment about the following... Ranger Wyatt warns East Tennesseans: THURSDAY FEBRUARY 11 - Bird's Eye View Pub and Coffee House, Knoxville, TN (www.birdseyeviewpc.com) - 9 PM And I feel like it ought to be noted that I'm going to pull myself away from "Must See TV" to be a part of this historic event-- the first live One Riot One Ranger show in the Volunteer State. Heck, I may even have to add a new historic marker to the "Cradle of Country Music" walking tour. "On this spot on February 11, 1999, worldwide fears of the predicted Y2K disaster were realized 10 months ahead of schedule. It will be noted that the end came not with a bang or a whimper, but with a bluegrass band armed with an accordion and Jim Jesse lyric sheets." Of course, it'll also be nice to have the Ranger boys on the air with us at WDVX that afternoon. We're non-commercial radio, so it's not like ratings really ever mattered to us, anyway. Yours in Ranger love, Shane Rhyne Knoxville, TN [EMAIL PROTECTED] NP: Johnny Hicks His Troubadors, Hamburger Hop FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12 - Station Inn, Nashville, TN (www.extravaganza.org) - 12 midnight I view the latter show, which places the Rangers in the epicenter of bluegrass in Music City, to be a sign that the Last Days are truly nigh. Deal with it. P.S. Did anyone else see Riders in the Sky on Penn and Teller this past week? Meshel says: and I'll plug some coolness in P2 music happening at my place, the House of Twang, on Saturday. Definately some One Riot, Hayseed has been promised... Those One Riot guys were nowhere to be seen - now that they've hit the Americana chart, it's "see you later, bluegrass suckers, don't call me, I'll call you" - but I did run into and introduce myself to Hayseed at SPBGMA this weekend, and he mentioned this. GrooveGrass
All right, I finally got a chance to hear the GrooveGrass album (which is now being released by Warner Bros), and I have to say I'm underwhelmed. I'm open to odd musical fusions, but this attempt to fuse bluegrass and funk falls mostly flat. It just sounds like two disparate kinds of music were rammed together with no apparent purpose in mind. I've heard Chili Peppers ripoffs that were more funky, and it sure doesn't make for satisfying bluegrass either. Unimaginative beats, and a fella singin' (GrooveGrass creator Scott Rouse) who sounds like he should be frontin' some earnest '70s boogie-rock band. He's about as far from funky *and* high lonesome as you can get. Compare this album to Greg Garing's Alone, and you'll see how unimaginative and just plain lame this album is. Garing has the musical and vocal chops to get away with his audacious fusion of electronic dance music with country, bluegrass and rock. Despite the big names helping him out, Rouse just doesn't seem to have what it takes to pull it off.--don

Many apologies for this mispost - it flew seemingly of its own will out of my Drafts folder and onto the Internet, and while I stood screaming at my computer and jabbed furiously at the keys, nothing would bring it back. I try never to send goobers and graphic doodads in my posts; particular apologies for those. Kelly

Sounds bad enough to me, being no big fan of fusion stuff usually, but I'm not listening to Parlor James, Old Dreams, which I just picked up. This is the future of alt. country. Well, maybe not. But it is a very very interesting disc. Electronica (which normally I loathe) mixed with banjer? And more weird shit. But it works. At least so far.

Have they been raked over the P2 coals yet? For those who havent heard of them, it consists of Amy Allison (Mose's daughter), who has a, um, unusual voice, and Ryan Hedgecock, late of Lone Justice. Don Heffington (also Lone Justice) does nice drum work on this too. Very intriguing stuff.

Hadacol questions comments
So I picked up that new Hadacol CD on the recommendations of several around here who are often to be much trusted, and I'm pretty much impressed. This is pretty straightahead alt.country in the sense most people mean it most of the time whatever that is, played and sung pretty well. As maybe befits an album produced by the Skeleton's Lou Whitney, the sound crosses lines in a sort of encyclopedia of styles liked around here. The sound influences are fairly obvious--Steve Earle (but of course; nice duo with Cisco)..John Prine, Alejandro Escovedo, somea Green on Red I think, some rockabilly, even post-Like a Rolling Stone style La Bamba changes...it all comes together pretty effectively, though it would be hard to say something clearly their own has turned up in the process. Now I'm wondering--what were these guys playing befoire. I understand is a successor band to one some of our members from the Missouri/Kansas metroplex area referred to now and then--Big Iron. (Guess they dropped that name cause Heavay Metal is one thing they're not, and they're not on the Old 97s first label either!) So what'd that ol' band sound like--and is any part of that some part of this? Barry M. (Gotta use the last initial since I noticved another Barry on the premises today!)

This is the Fear Whiskey playlist for this week's show. Fear and Whiskey can be heard every Monday from 7-10pm ET on 88.3fm in Pittsburgh and on AudioActive, Winamp and pretty much every mp3-based program via http://www.wrct.org. Past playlists are available at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~cz28.fear.html. As this was my last show before Valentine's Day, the theme tonight was love songs. I threw in a couple of curveballs here and there, but for the most part, what you got were sweet, pretty love songs. Just wanted to point out that the latest issue of Flipside contains a really good Flat Duo Jets interview. Also in the issue is a hilarious interview with Loverboy singer Mike Reno, in which he reveals the fate of those "cool" red leather pants (I know at least one person on this list had a memorable brush of greatness with the headbanded one back in the 1980s).
