As the postconf(5) man page says, this is system-dependent.

To see what the default is on your system, run 'postconf -d alias_maps'
To see what the current value is on your system, run 'postconf  
alias_maps'

alias_maps (default: see "postconf -d" output)

[root@server ~]# postconf -d | grep alias_maps
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases, nis:mail.aliases

On my server the default is /etc/aliases, even if not defined in main.cf.
