I have a related question to Douglas L Noble's question on " TLD Spike Sample
Vendor"

1) I would like to know the users of a contractor dosimeter DLRs who
perform blind spikes and if there is a particular frequency (e.g., on all
personnel DLRs returned for processing)? STP requires at least 15 blind spikes
to be sent semi-annually with the personnel DLRs. We also require blind spikes
with neutron exposure to be sent once every two years.

2) What radiation types/ANSI 13.11 categories are used for the spikes and
is there a particular delivered dose range tested? Blinds are irradiated to an
exposure level of 300-600 mrem beta/gamma. There is no neutron standard range,
but the exposure is calculated and documented at the time of the exposure.
These values are what we compare as part of our quality checks.

3) Is there a particular number of spikes per range and category? We send
15 beta/gamma blinds semi-annually, and we calculate a representative number of
neutron blinds that are sent every two years.

4) INPO 05-008 Rev2 had indicated a processor's requirements, but Rev 3
doesn't indicate these requirement. What guidance or requirement drives the
performance of blind spikes at your facility? Most of our DLR requirements are
listed in our Quality Control procedure for DLR processing. Those requirements
generally match the recommendations of ANI for validating vendor performance.

There are other approved Calibration Labs by NVLAP, look under Calibration
Facilities. You can also use A2LA spike, as well as other approved facilities.

There is a NIST Bulletin that describes approved requirements (I am away and
can provide later).
