Stumbled across the following post on Python list:

After watching Bret Victor's talk[1], I want **much** better tools for
programming (and all of the other stuff I do on the computer).
John Resig, creator of jQuery, claims[2] that Victor's presentation inspired
the new platform for learning javascript at Khan Academy[3]. I plan to try it
out.

I recommend the vimeo video (Inventing on Principal) which demonstrates some
really cool (experimental) programming tools.

[OT] 10 Things Most Americans Don't Know About America

2012-08-31 Thread Ed Leafe
If you're one of those people who think that the USA is better than
every other country at everything, stop reading and click 'Delete' now. This
will offend you greatly.

For the rest of us, it is a sobering look at America from the point of
view of an American who has lived in many parts of the world.

Imagine you have a brother and he’s an alcoholic. He has his moments,
but you keep your distance from him. You don’t mind him for the occasional
family gathering or holiday. You still love him. But you don’t want to be
around him. This is how I lovingly describe my current relationship with the
United States. The United States is my alcoholic brother. And although I will
always love him, I don’t want to be near him at the moment.

Patriotism has it place Mike, but not false pride. I listened to much
of the Republican National Convention and got a ear full of the need for
America to remain a world leader with strong preemptive military powers,
and the need for America to be a Democratic, Economic, and Moral role
model for the rest of the world. Condi Rice especially spoke to the
need for America to enlightenment the rest of the world by example or
force if needed. Condi also spoke about, as a young girl growing up in
the segregated south, that she could aspire to becoming the President of
the USA.

What do you think, Mike. Will Condi Rick run for president in 2016, or
perhaps we will have a Jeb Bush, Condi Rice neoconservative bid. LOL
The point I'm making is this approach has already been tried from 2000
to 2008, and proved to be prohibitively costly in terms of loss of
international esteem, loss of life, loss of national treasure and loss
of property, and resulted in almost no return in term of achieving the
desired results. It's also interesting to note that neoconservative,
who register as Republicans, claim to be conservatives, but really spend
more and create more government, than liberals. LOL

It's hard to sell the USA to the rest of the world, as a shinning
example of success, when so many other countries have living standard
much better than ours.

#
Excerpt:
Neoconservatism is a variant of the political ideology of conservatism
which combines features of traditional (paleo) conservatism, military
interventionism, social conservatism, nationalism, and a qualified
endorsement of free markets.[1] Neoconservatism (or new conservatism) is
rooted in a group of former liberals, who in the late 1960s, began to
embrace nationalism and interventionism in opposition the rise of the
USSR and moved significantly to the right of the spectrum.

Re: [OT] 10 Things Most Americans Don't Know About America

2012-08-31 Thread Nicholas Geti
I have no problem with listing things that need fixing but when these people
don't want to come back to visit our country, that's when I am turned off
and think they are just plain jerks.

If your brother is an alcoholic, you try to do something, not roll him out
of the closet on special occasions. As I was reading this article I realized
that every point applies to some other country as well. Anybody can come up
with anecdotal themes to explain one's point but so what?

E.g. go to any country and ask someone where Iowa is. I'll bet 100% of them
wouldn't know. That proves nothing about whether our citizens know what's
going on in the world.

Another one: We are consumed by our success attitude which is caused by
massive corruption. Every country in the world has the same problem with
corruption. India, Afghanistan, and many more are constantly in the news
about their vast culture of corruption. So the author is full of b.s. Every
country's citizens are striving for material success not just here.

If you're one of those people who think that the USA is better than every
other country at everything, stop reading and click 'Delete' now. This
 will offend you greatly.

For the rest of us, it is a sobering look at America from the point of
view of an American who has lived in many parts of the world.

Imagine you have a brother and he’s an alcoholic. He has his moments, but
you keep your distance from him. You don’t mind him for the occasional
family gathering or holiday. You still love him. But you don’t want to be
around him. This is how I lovingly describe my current relationship with
the United States. The United States is my alcoholic brother. And although
I will always love him, I don’t want to be near him at the moment.
