The free version is MariaDB. But the easiest thing if your time is worth
anything would be to just set up a virtual server on Amazon Web Services.

Yes. It is $699 for the pro license. You get to build as many solutions for as
many clients as you see fit. Just like the VFP license

It is free to try out. You just need the license when you compile the
executable for deployment

Yes, my bad. I guess I'm more open-source minded than I realized.

The software developer has stated emphatically that they will only
support SQL Server and are encouraging all their users to switch to
Azure eventually. I offered, but they had no interest in my opinion.

Well I could be mistaken on the open-source part but jabber is built on top
of XMPP and you can certainly host your own server or use one of many
publicly available servers. Of course, this may have all changed at some
point since I was really looking at it.

So, when you asked for the free version of MySQL, you meant the "free"
version of SQL Server?

Well, never mind, then.

Slack - they have both free and paid versions. The real limit that we have
seen is that the free version doesn't keep as much history but for most, it
works just fine. You can setup multiple accounts and manage the
communications from within a single client.

What would you do?

2017-12-16 Thread Michael Madigan
A client may be forced to convert his legacy foxpro software to something
commercial and currently commercially supported by the manufacturer.      My
client would prefer to keep it as is, but the decision may be out of his hands.
Open source is probably out too.
There is no software currently on the market that will do what he does the way
he does it.
What would you do?  The system is relatively simple, has to support 100
simultaneous users, has to be at least as secure as Foxpro, and run from a
internal server.  Id love something that works like Foxpro, I.E.   a DBMS
package with a powerful programming language, and is easy to learn.
What would you migrate it to?

M$ marketing wins again!

Nothing against "the Evil Empire" but I just don't like using SQL
Server as much as I do VFP, MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle.
