Have it in a VM. Still completely unconvinced that the Metro overlay
will make any sense for serious desktop users, especially in the
corporate world. Once you get back to the desktop, I can't see any
changes that would compel you to move from Windows 7.

So for me Microsoft realise this and I think their main focus is on the
ARM version, and touch-screen devices.

Notice how the song kept saying in the cloud. They're hammering on

I asked my mgr to get a display for touch. She is thinking about it
when I said that Win8 can use it and we can develop for it with HTML5.

I see a new workflow to get a COA, Certificate of Analysis, for our
products when a truck is going out the door. We will no longer print
a pdf and staple it to a BOL for the receiving customer to keep.

It does seem obvious that the Metro version is not seriously intended
for use by desktop business applications. Combine that with the fact
that their first release was a 'Developer Preview', and I conclude that
the primary reason for Metro was to provide a development environment
for portable devices.

Unfortunately, in the rush to the Cloud/Pad market, it seems several
things got left out of the business-as-usual half of things.

I foresee a long Win 7 period, followed by a leapfrog over Win 8 to
whatever follows it.

In other words, the same as usual pattern of adoption.

The central problem is that Microsoft is trying to create a
touch-centric interface when the majority of devices out there don't support
touch. Apple, in contrast, started pushing trackpads and touch mice a few years
ago, and then started to move OS X to be more like the iOS. I'm running Lion,
and have long ago ditched my mice for trackpads, and I find that I'm now much
faster using gestures because I've had years to get used to the concept. The
gestures that I use on my trackpad in OS X are the same that I use on my iOS
devices; if I were using a mouse with a scroll wheel, it wouldn't be anywhere
near as easy.
