> If you don't set the DESTDIR on make install it will honour the

"The use of DESTDIR does not affect the contents of libqpid-proton.pc." is not
as clear as it might be. I think something like "The paths in libqpid-proton.pc
are not adjusted for DESTDIR, so if that is specified they will not be
accurate."

I'll add a note to the README file saying that DESTDIR doesn't affect the
install prefix or anything that depends on it.

Regarding the dynamic languages, we can always provide an override variable
that sets the path(s) at CMake initialization. If this value is not present,
which would be the default, then CMake would do as it does currently and
interrogate the dynamic language for the install location.

Also, if 'DESTDIR isn't meant to update the paths' in the pkg conf file, that
should probably be noted in the README.

As far as I can see it is still not possible to install both c headers/libs and
bindings to a non-standard location and still rely on pkg-config for dependency
configuration. I would concede that is not the common use case, but it is one
that I would have expected to work. For my own needs I can just disable the
bindings. If you close it mark it as wont fix (rather than not a bug or
resolved) unless you can point describe a solution.

"The dynamic languages are behaving as expected, as they will install to
directories as specified by the dynamic languages themselves."

So is there some other way to change where the bindings get installed, if I as
a user don't want to use the standard location for the given language for
whatever reason?

Looking into this more, the pkg-config file (libqpid-proton.pc) seems to be
setting its values properly. There was a separate bug (PROTON-412) that fixed
issues with that file, where the paths were being misconfigured.

The only issue that'll come up is that the paths within it are based on the
environment as described to CMake prior to the build. Using DESTDIR isn't meant
to update the paths in that file but is used for things like building for a
package distribution; i.e., you wouldn't use it to actually install onto your
system.

The dynamic languages are behaving as expected, as they will install to
directories as specified by the dynamic languages themselves.

Should we then close this issue?

PROTON-342: Added a note about CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX and bindings

Explained how it doesn't affect the location for where the language
bindings are installed. Also a note about how to use DESTDIR to
constrain install locations and how to, from the command line, disable
building some or all of the language bindings.

The problem can be mitigated by specifying -DBUILD_PYTHON=OFF -DBUILD_RUBY=OFF
etc when running cmake. This prevents the building and installation of the
bindings (and thus avoids having to use DESTDIR at all)
