Here's a song I co-wrote some years ago entitled "If Every day Were Christmas."
Some will remember the big version I produced back in 2005. This is my own, solo
version, as originally intended—mellower and, let's face it, what's a holiday tune
without a little schmaltz?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cckXxjCkLxU&feature=youtu.be

For what it's worth (and that would happen to be around 99 cents), it's
available in the iTunes store as well:

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Re: Christmas tune

2014-12-25 Thread Rui Vilarinho

Do you mean Rui ? me? grin .
well I must say that this specific Xmas song recording was made in my
mother in law house, actually in a normal bedroom ! grin .
Is that, I am on Xmas season holiday's on Brazil, my wifes native country,
although we live in Portugal.

Anyway, the aim was to make it some kind of raw garage recording I suppose.
Well, my laptop, my audio interface, my condenser mic plus headphones cab
cables and so on must travel with me. if not I go crazy! grin .

Back home recording room is better treated for sure.

Take care mate,
Rui Vilarinho

Well, it's really me playing a real Hohner Marine-Band Harp model tuned
in A. I have some Hohner blues harp's but stil prefer the Marine-band's,
better for bending notes technique.

Wasrecorded using my suntronic condenser mic. I only insert some 100
hertz high pass filter, and a bit of compressor, since the masterband
compressor plus Boost 11 limiter glue the rest.

Of course easch instrment has got some rever acordingly.
real fun!

Firstly Chris,
I have only heard "Oh come all ye faithful" and I think the main problem
with this track is that, you are not a rock singer.

I have heard you do other things a lot better.
You don't sound at all as if you are enjoying it, it sounds like your
trying too hard.

Stick to the country music and stay in your comfort zone.
You do have a lot of talent and you shouldn't keep beating yourself up.

OK. you all asked for it. I'm telling you now, this isn't any good
though.

Like I say, I can think of at least 100 things in the first verse I did
really badly.

I won't list near all of them here, but for one, I dragged the tempo, my
chords were way way off in a few places, my base guitar pattern line
sucked,
my mandolin track was way way too loud, my vocals were way over
compressed,

I was extremely flat in places, I strained quite a bit on a lot of the
higher notes, my backing harmoney was way off, not to mention not in sync,
I

cut wayyy too much low ends out of my lead vocal while e queueing most
likely, etc.

I'll send you two of them. If you write back and say, eek, yikes! then
yeah, I know, dont' say it, I already know it's not! good! But, alas, as
you said, Christmas is about sharing, so I'll definitely do it. I'm very
very very very very! hesitant to do so, but, I will.

So, two tracks. First: Silver Bells:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16962268/silver-bells.wav

Then, one I think is even worse!... Oh Come all Ye Faithful:

I'll give the book a look. It looks like, unless I am reading this web site

Chris,
You don't have to spend money to learn to mix, if that is a goal you have.
Go to www.cambridge-mt.com. Pick up the book Mixing Secrets for the Small
Studio. On that site is a huge free multitrack library. Download,
practice, upload your mix somewhere, and post to the message forum - also
on that site - looking for feedback.

OK. you all asked for it. I'm telling you now, this isn't any good though.
Like I say, I can think of at least 100 things in the first verse I did really
badly.

I won't list near all of them here, but for one, I dragged the tempo, my chords
were way way off in a few places, my base guitar pattern line sucked, my
mandolin track was way way too loud, my vocals were way over compressed, I was
extremely flat in places, I strained quite a bit on a lot of the higher notes,
my backing harmoney was way off, not to mention not in sync, I cut wayyy too
much low ends out of my lead vocal while e queueing most likely, etc.

I'll send you two of them. If you write back and say, eek, yikes! then yeah, I
know, dont' say it, I already know it's not! good! But, alas, as you said,
Christmas is about sharing, so I'll definitely do it. I'm very very very very
very! hesitant to do so, but, I will.

So, two tracks. First: Silver Bells:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16962268/silver-bells.wav

Then, one I think is even worse!... Oh Come all Ye Faithful:

I was just waiting to make sure there was a YouTube version available,
lest I was accused of pimping the tune…

Here's a song I co-wrote some years ago entitled "If Every day Were
Christmas." Some will remember the big version I produced back in 2005.
This is my own, solo version, as originally intended—mellower and, let's
face it, what's a holiday tune without a little schmaltz?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cckXxjCkLxU&feature=youtu.be

For what it's worth (and that would happen to be around 99 cents), it's
available in the iTunes store as well:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/if-every-day-were-christmas/id946585587?i=946585588

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Re: Christmas tune

2014-12-20 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK. you all asked for it. I'm telling you now, this isn't any good though.
Like I say, I can think of at least 100 things in the first verse I did
really badly.

I won't list near all of them here, but for one, I dragged the tempo, my
chords were way way off in a few places, my base guitar pattern line sucked,
my mandolin track was way way too loud, my vocals were way over compressed,
I was extremely flat in places, I strained quite a bit on a lot of the
higher notes, my backing harmoney was way off, not to mention not in sync, I
cut wayyy too much low ends out of my lead vocal while e queueing most
likely, etc.

I'll send you two of them. If you write back and say, eek, yikes! then
yeah, I know, dont' say it, I already know it's not! good! But, alas, as
you said, Christmas is about sharing, so I'll definitely do it. I'm very
very very very very! hesitant to do so, but, I will.

So, two tracks. First: Silver Bells:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16962268/silver-bells.wav

Then, one I think is even worse!... Oh Come all Ye Faithful:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16962268/Chris%20Gilland%20-%20Oh%20Come%20all%20Ye%20Faithful.wav

The Roland Integra7 is a rack-mount module. It's one of the only remaining

Like I say, if anyone wants to hear my version of Silver Bells, write me off
list. I'm way too embarrassed to publicly put it up here. Honestly, I think
it's terrible, but if you all really? and I do mean really? wanna hear it, let
me know.

I'm probably just setting way too high expectations for myself, but Just within
the first verse alone, even before getting to the first chorus, I can probably
name you over 100 things that could use a lot of work. Problem is, no matter
how hard I try to polish them, I just can't get the sound I'm needing. I know
mainly the things which seem to need fixing, and I can hear in my head what I
should a done differently, but I just can't audibly do it.

I'm not sure if it's my voice that just isn't suited for vocals, or if it is my
arrangements that flat out suck, or what... Further, you'd think after
listenning to Matt's tutorial, and working with it for over 3 months almost
nonstop, I'd at least have a bit more of a grasp on what I'm doing, but I still
just cannot get PT to do what I want it to. I confess, there are times that I
wonder why I even botherred getting into trying to record my music. I just
don't know if I have what it's cut out to be. I listen to all you all, and
wonder how you all do it! I'm not going to say I can't carry a tune at all,
but I certainly am not recording material, face it.

I just wonder if the potential is there for me to even become really good.
People have said, Chris, so you're not a professional as you'd like to be.
Do it because you love doing it. Do it for the glory of god's ministry!
Don't worry what other's think. It's not so much what they think. It's what
I! think. I just don't think I've got what it takes.

If you all really wanna hear this, and make suggestions, ok, but if you're
gonna recommend things, be sure to be very specific. If you could point out
particular parts of the song that you think I could a done better, then that
would help, rather than jsut saying over all, it needs a lotta work. Duh!
I know that already.

Anyway, it's on Dropbox, so if anyone wants it, just say the word and I'll
shoot you over the link to the wave file.

Chris.

I did a version of Silver Bells, if you all really wanna hear it, but trust me,

really insist hearing it, I'll upload it to Dropbox, as I don't know how to get
stuff like that on Youtube, but believe me, I'm telling you now, it's not that
great in my opinion. I also did Oh Come all Ye Faithful, but again, it's not
that great. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get it to a point where
either sound worth anything to be distributed.

I'm probably being way way too hard on myself, but face it! I'm never gonna be
a Brian Howerton, I'm never gonna be Slau nor Kevin, and I highly doubt I'll
ever be as good as Matt either.

Chris.

Here's a song I co-wrote some years ago entitled "If Every day Were

was accused of pimping the tune…

Here's a song I co-wrote some years ago entitled "If Every day Were Christmas."
Some will remember the big version I produced back in 2005. This is my own,
solo version, as originally intended—mellower and, let's face it, what's a
holiday tune without a little schmaltz?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cckXxjCkLxU
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cckXxjCkLxU&feature=youtu.be> &feature=youtu.be

For what it's worth (and that would happen to be around 99 cents), it's
available in the iTunes store as well:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/if-every-day-were-christmas/id946585587?i=946585588

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Slau, that was excellent! The piano was gorgeous. In the spirit of sharing

Thanks. Yes, it's a Yamaha C3 although I wouldn't have hesitated to use Ivory
for this one. I happened to have the piano tuned and ready to go from a
previous session, all miked up and waiting so I played the real one this time.

Yep, arranged the strings, called in some players and supplemented with patches
from the Roland Integra7. George Hrab on drums and I did everything else except
strings which were a number of women from Julliard and Manhattan school of

Cheers,
