Hi Brian, I've used the Advanced audio U-87 and it's not bad! As for the real deal the "Neumann U-87" Bill Bradley modified my 87 & its stunning, but so is the price! http://www.micshop.com The Advanced audio Tube microphone CM-12LE Limited Edition Tom Graefe version, sounds almost identical to the infamous AKG C-12 Which 2 of the original AKG C-12 were used in its design mod by my friend Tom Graefe. Its now my Wife's lead vocal mic of choice exclusively!) Great price for the Advanced audio CM-12LE mod version is only $100.00 more and Dave at Advanced audio is very nice to deal with :) I highly recommend that CM-12. Within the last year, always have had imediate responses. Its a small family run company and they did change over some email systems in the last while if I recall, so worth investigating/contacting again. I haven’t used but have their more expensive c12 and its excellent as is their customer service. Sarm audio also makes a u87 clone which has more mixed reviews. Roswell audio are getting a lot of good reviews for their mini k47 microphone which is about 300 US I believe and from samples I’ve heard its a good all rounder. After going through the files in the Sweetwater microphone shootout today, doing a blind test of sorts, I realized that my ears have expensive freaking taste! I chose the U87, Miktech, telafunken, Lauten Audio Clarion, and the manley reference gold. Now back to reality where none of those are going to be in the cards right now. It's got to be five hundred or less. I did find one other microphone that stood out for me though... The Majave MA50. Any thoughts on that one? Cameron. Hello, Of the five, I have experience with two. I much prefer the Blue over the AKG. The Blue is more versatile IMO. When the AKG shines, it does so quite well, but the convers was true as well, when it is not a good fit, it is a dragon to wrestle down to fit in the mix. The Blue has been a good go to mic for both vocals and instruments, just look at the generation, some, like myself swear by the older ones.
