Puppet reports an error when it cannot find any facts.d folder in any module:

Error: /File[/var/lib/puppet/facts.d]: Could not evaluate: Could not retrieve information from environment some_environment source(s) puppet://puppet.master/pluginfacts

the workaround is to create a facts.d folder at $environmentpath/module_name/.
This is a bug, because this happens due to:
puppet/lib/puppet/file_serving/mount/pluginfacts.rb

After talking with @llowder I think this is harmless (there is probably no risk that those hyphens will come back and haunt a 4.0 system after an upgrade), and of great value in helping customers transition to 3x.

https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/transaction.rb#L306-L310
This bug still exists in the master branch as of today and was introduced in 2.7.8 with this commit:
https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/000a2d811c740f4179a0cd4ced38e886858cf01f
The rescue condition means that any exception raised by providers during prefetch gets logged but then swallowed by Puppet. As a result of this, any provider which relies only on prefetch to find all instances will end up running the resource creation regardless of whether the resource exists or not.
In order to negate this behaviour, provider authors would need to create checks for instance existence which run during the creation phase as well, which defeats the point of having prefetch in the first place.

See #17842 for an example of this:
http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/17842#note-5
The problem is that this is invalid in the parser:
 file  { '/tmp/foo': ensure = present, require = [ Mymodule::foo['bar'] ], }
But this works successfully:
 create_resources('file', { '/usr/local/homeaway/api-favorites-ustst1-jdk/java' = { ensure = present, require = Mymodule::foo[bar] }})
However, in PuppetDB we are more strict and the second case fails with an invalid relationship error - we can fix the error message on our end, but this still shouldn't be allowed I believe.
The question is - should this be fixed in the internals so people tapping resource creation (like within create_resources) get an error or something else? Or perhaps fixed in create_resources? Its basically just an inconsistency between that methodology and what the parser enforces.

At present, it sounds like we are planning to pull support for the old web servers in favor of Puppet Server in Puppet 5.0. We should go through and remove all of the settings from puppet.conf that would have been related to the other servers but will no longer be used.

Could we please have a shortcut to Puppet's confdir in the Start Menu folder on Windows? I find myself creating a shortcut for easy access to the directory when I am working on Windows systems, and figured I'd make a formal request for it to be added in. Currently, I have to unhide hidden folders in explorer and navigate there if I were to solely use the GUI to do this. All that in order to, say, edit a configuration setting in puppet.conf.
Currently there is a very useful Puppet Enterprise folder in the Start Menu with items like links to Documentation, shortcuts to run Puppet, Facter etc. A shortcut to the confdir will be a very useful addition.
Thank you!

Ugh, yeah the check for executable? at https://github.com/puppetlabs/facter/blob/2.3.0/lib/facter/core/execution/posix.rb#L18 should perhaps check that it's a file as well.
Peter Huene does cfacter share this behavior?

It does not. cfacter checks that the full path is both a file and executable.

The zpool provider has not been able to manage mirror or raidz virtual devices since Puppet 3 due to a regression introduced in http://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/16157 and commit https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/4a6853e1de083842362dc30d08429b029f64.
The issue is fixed in PUP-3388, but it means the functionality has been broken for over a year and nobody noticed.
We should remove the zpool type and provider from puppet core and into a module.

Mark Schmick A minimal but decent type/provider for the kind of alternative that Dustin J. Mitchell suggested exists at https://github.com/lwf/puppet-remote_file(https://github.com/lwf/puppet-remote_file). I've had a lot of luck with this particular one. It doesn't yet support an equivalent of wget's  {wget --timestamping}
, but the author is receptive to pull requests if that feature is needed.

2014-11-11 Thread Trevor Vaughan
