Just one call to kinit that doesn't require a password or keytab will get them a ticket they can use to access kerberised services. With a small cron job, that ticket could be perpetually up to date and access to stuff like NFSv4 a no-brainer. I think that would open up whole new ways of deploying puppet itself and systems using puppet. I fully appreciate your reluctance to include a feature that's not directly going to help Puppet do it's job any better. As for the rationale why I'd like to urge you to do so anyway: I am currently doing a project where I'm tasked with providing a Kerberos infrastructure for authentication and general security (on-the-wire encryption). Puppet is already set as the tool of choice for setting up everything else. While arguing whether to do something as security-sensitive as Kerberos using Puppet we had a look around for modules that we could use. We found quite some on Puppetforge, some others on GitHub and then another in the Bigtop Hadoop distribution. Because there's no other way currently, they all basically just pass around passwords for all kinds of things that need to be secured. If you're lucky, they force you to provide them as class parameters so you at least get a hint of what you're doing. But most just silently use an insecure default password to do their work leaving a totally insecure end result waiting for desaster to happen. My experience is that this kind of thing will find its way into production environments no matter how many warnings the README contains. So we wanted to do better and a friend had the idea of trying to use Puppet's already existing trust framework i.e. its X.509 certificates to get Kerberos off the ground. For context: With an extension called PKINIT it's possible to use Kerberos without any passwords or those easily misunderstood keytab files. Instead you authenticate yourself with an X.509 certificate and the corresponding private key to the Kerberos server (KDC). As luck would have it, every Puppet agent already has one of those. Using them completely eliminates the need to use passwords. The machine can even log on to the Kerberos server and configure additional services puppet tells it to run on itself (very meta, I know . Basically, that's secure auto-enrollment or self-provisioning. From a security standpoint all this is at least as secure as the puppet master. And after bootstrapping is done and Kerberos is set up the way it should be, you just need to disable PKINIT and the puppet agent on the KDCs and they're as secure if they were set up manually. Because no passwords were ever used, nothing can linger around in the Hiera database and no insecure default passwords can be exploited. So we tried using csr_attributes.yaml to get where we wanted to be. Immediately we hit a number of problems: Kerberos needs special extendedKeyUsages and Puppet's CA assumes authority over those, refusing to accept any. The Kerberos principals the certificate applies to are encoded in subjectAltNames which the Puppet CA also assumes authority over and the agent already has a comannd line option for.

SELinux was not enable on the Squeeze system I used, so I used the steps on Debian's wiki to enable it. Before enabling it:

Verified in master at SHA=f19fcc9a170800fb565361e260be6b0f6d3dc402. Facter reports Debian's and RHEL7's selinux_config_policy correctly. On RHEL7:

If you instead try to install s3cmd, it works. Also note that for EL7, you need to install the EPEL repository in order to install the python-pip package.
