The closer to actual release we get the more accurate that field is for the pending release. If code has been merged you can pretty much count on that it will be released in the next release. We do not mark something as fixed/closed until we actually release. The state Resolved is the highest state of being done that we use until it has been released. I can see two use cases: 1) For YAML, ability to go directly from existing puppet resources to YAML entries I can put into hiera to feed into create_resource 2) for JSON, as an extension point to use puppet in the context of shell scripts, python fabric scripts, etc. For example, using the puppetlabs-aws module, you could loop over the output of a puppet resource command listing all ec2_instances, use jq in bash (or python json parsing, etc) to select instances that lack appropriate tags, modify the JSON to add the appropriate tags, then feed that back into puppet apply to update the resources. Ideally, I'd like some ability to pipe JSON into a puppet resource to set parameters, as well, but that's less important because I can use puppet functions in a puppet apply. Add Comment

Perhaps we should update the title of the ticket to reflect a more general scope of evaluating Puppet 4 error messages? Also, now that there's a great doc in place (thanks Thomas Hallgren) that lists all the error messages, I think our best course of action might be to review the messages internally with tech pubs (Nicholas Fagerlund?), UX, and anyone else that might be interested. We can probably hammer out some high value refinements in a short time and then return to other 3.8-4.0 work for now. These update their respective 'timestamp' fields. Since this timestamp is used to determine if a node is stale (should be automatically deactivated), it ensures GC won't happen until `node-ttl` after sync. This is compounded by cases where GC happens at different times on each node and a sync happens in between, which may cause a previously deactivated node to be re-activated with a long ttl. 1. Require NTP to run on puppet master + pdb 2. Change GC query (scf.storage/stale-nodes) to use producer_timestamp 3. Audit code to find other usages of factset.timestamp, catalog.timestamp in logic 4. Title: Message Title David Lutterkort created an issue Puppet / PUP-4193 Add pattern matching to the Puppet DSL Issue Type: New Feature Assignee: Unassigned Created: 2015/03/12 3:47 PM Priority: Normal Reporter: David Lutterkort ML-like languages have a language feature called 'pattern matching' (which has nothing to do with regular expressions) - they provide a very powerful control structure to make decisions based on multiple criteria; at their simplest they are a convenient shorthand for nested switch statements. They can also be used to make decisions based on the shape of data structures, and to pull values out of them, though I am not sure how much of that would be useful for Puppet. A lot of Puppet code does exactly that: nest a switch statement on one variable inside the branches of a switch statement on another variable, and a shorthand for this could simplify quite a few Puppet manifests. As an example, I attach a version of apt::params from the puppetlabs/apt module that shows what this construct would look like. It cuts the size of params.pp almost in half, and more importantly makes it much clearer what values decisions are based on, and what variables get set because of those decisions. This is a problem because once puppetserver is installed, it cannot start the service because it cannot traverse through /var/log/puppetlabs into /var/log/puppetlabs/puppetserver. Other information: :rundir is 0755 in defaults.rb which is why we don't see this here. We also don't see this in our testing because we don't run puppet in the space between installing puppet-agent and puppetserver.

An easier way to do this would be {{puppet apply -e notice(defined('$osfamily')). Inverse the quotes, Prevents the variable interpolation to begin with and avoids the escaping.
