Most modules will probably only use a single level common - if they have defaults that vary, it is probably per operating system (osfamily).
Thomas, can you add an example to pre-docs with a two level hiera.yaml; os/%{::osfamily}} and common ?

1. You interpretation of what I was trying to convey in that sentence is correct. 2. Yes, names must be unique within a hiera.yaml. A duplicate will yield an error based on this template (path is the full path of the hiera.yaml where error is found):

A name is never interpolated but when it represents a path (in case no path is specified), the path is interpolated.
It sounds like you're saying that if you set
:name: "virtual/%{::virtual}"
...then the name of the hierarchy level will be "virtual/%{::virtual}", not "virtual_vmware" or whatever — but the path will be interpolated when finding the actual file to read?
Do :names have to be unique for every hierarchy level?

Custom Customer has an internal, custom self service Portal and regularly creates and destroys nodes and node names are reused. Today if they destroy a node and remove it from PE (deactivate, revoke and clean cert) then create a node with the same name reports which still fall within the PDB TTL setting remain associated with the now new node. As part of node deprovisioning, it would be useful to have a way to remove reports associated with this node (either from the CLI, API, GUI or all). The following is a workaround{code}sudo -u pe-puppetdb /opt/puppetlabs/server/bin/psql pe-puppetdb -c "delete from reports where certname='certname.mycorp.net';"{code}

But I don't find the new error message to be more helpful than the original one. For example, as an end-user (pretending to not know the internals of Puppet), I find "Name" confusing, and why is it capitalized? Did I write "Name" in the manifest, when I should have done typed "name"?

To address https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/15559, https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/commit/b578ed48ac9585edb86b296e99f8aeeecc02fb4e was added so that in the cases where an owner / group / mode were specified that did not include {{SYSTEM}}, Puppet would re-add {{SYSTEM}} permissions. Since there is generally no reason to remove {{SYSTEM}} permissions, the previous behavior was problematic as it could prevent services (like Puppet itself) from accessing files and directories.This was handled by setting {{NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)}} on files and directories.However, this approach was subtly flawed, when files or directories are written to a directory that had {{SYSTEM}} permissions re-added by Puppet. Since inheritance is not set with the re-added permissions, these new children would no longer have an ACE for {{NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)}}. The solution here is to ensure that the {{SYSTEM}} ace is instead set like {{NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(F)(CI)(OI)}}. This allows the {{SYSTEM}} permission to propagate to any newly created files or directories within the parent managed directory, by turning on container inheritance (for directories) and object inheritance (for files).As it turns out, Puppet itself is affected by this flaw on the first run that it writes an agent's private key, public key and the ca cert when the agent is not run as {{SYSTEM}} (which is the case during acceptance tests that run as {{cygsrv}} or {{Administrator}}). With debug logging on, the settings catalog, which explicitly sets permissions on these files (viahttps://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/defaults.rb#L709-L759), can be observed making changes to re-add missing {{SYSTEM}} permissions on the next Puppet run like:{code}[Debug: /File[C:/ProgramData/PuppetLabs/puppet/etc/ssl/private_keys/lmugyz1yds193au.delivery.puppetlabs.net.pem]/mode: mode changed '4000640' to '0640'[Debug: /File[C:/ProgramData/PuppetLabs/puppet/etc/ssl/public_keys/lmugyz1yds193au.delivery.puppetlabs.net.pem]/mode: mode changed '4000640' to '0644'[Debug: /File[C:/ProgramData/PuppetLabs/puppet/etc/ssl/certs/ca.pem]/mode: mode changed '4000640' to '0644'{code}Another affected area is the {{cache/client_data/catalog dir}} (client_datadir). Heavy-handed approaches have been employed like the one at https://github.com/puppetlabs/marionette-collective/blob/master/acceptance/tests/mco_puppet_powershell.rb#L77-L94 that remove the unmanaged directory written by {{cygsrv}} (and lacking {{SYSTEM}} permissions), so that a subsequent service run may recreate directories with appropriate permissions.

Since the checks that warn about this is done when parsing not when evaluating then in this case you get warnings like: You cannot collect exported resources without storeconfigs being set; the collection will be ignored at even though the collection might not actually happen due to the statement triggering the warning beeing in a conditional block that will not be used. It would be great if in addition to --disable_warnings deprecation you could disable these messages with --disable_warnings storeconfigs and I have a patch ready that implements this. Add Comment
