The options should be similar to the compile command, but instead of compiling manifests, it should prompt the user for input, evaluating each line (or multiple lines) as individual statements. Users should be able to finish the REPL session and optionally write out any catalog that would normally have been produced as if the user had typed the REPL session into a manifest file and compiled that. If we do the first paginated query, then vacuum executes, and then we do the second paginated query, the underlying table can be rewritten to have a different natural order. Reading the whole page upfront would have clarified things. However, I just followed the link to the conversion section, thus skipping that juicy part (I was not interested in converting octals or hex anyway). Since I would expect leading zeros not to be a problem when converting decimals, I didn't suspect this (hence this issue). Maybe a note or a link in the conversion section would help, but feel free to ignore the suggestion if it doesn't make sense. '010' would be a valid octal value (that is 8 decimal). The radix (i.e. 8 octal, 16 hex, or 10 decimal) is for string representation only - once converted to a number there is no difference 010 is the same value as 8, and the same value as 0x08. That is because your shell is mangling the string - the parser is not getting the string you think. If you put the same in a file and evaluate it - it works.

Henrik Lindberg your proposed solution didn't work unfortunately:
puppet apply -e 'notify{"result: ${'08'.scanf('%d')}": }'
Error: Could not parse for environment production: Not a valid octal number 08 at line 1:19 on node test.local

I didn't get anywhere in the docs that the conversion of strings to numbers is using octal values only. If that's the case, that needs to be clarified. But then this also works:
puppet apply -e 'notify{"result: ${'10' + 0}": }'

The error is correct, '08' is an illegal octal value since the maximum digit in radix 8 is 7. When you want to interpret a leading 0 as insignificant padding of a decimal value you need to use the scanf function.

I finally was able to solve my problem by removing the exported resources directly from the catalog_resources table. It's ugly but I was not able to find a better way.
