I've been hitting up against some of the issues that motivated PDB-2783 today, and I'm starting to think that whatever the resolution is there, we may get a big reduction in testing complexity just by using wire formats instead of query responses as the reference example data for reports. This problem is unique to reports – catalogs and facts do it already.
We have a good mechanism for converting wire formats to query responses (PuppetDB), but going the other way is outside the purview of the application, so we've hacked up a bunch of test-only plumbing to convert from whatever the current report response format is to every single report wire format we support. If instead we just had a static copy of data in each wire format, I think the only remaining case for a query->wire conversion would be in export.clj:
https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppetdb/blob/master/src/puppetlabs/puppetdb/export.clj#L64-64
and we would only need to keep that up to spec with the currently supported wire format. I believe this would allow us to delete all the conversion code in reports.clj.

We need the ability to mark resource properties as sensitive during catalog compilation, but we don't have a good way of passing the planned data type all the way through Puppet. There are two issues - we can't serialize catalogs with rich data types to JSON and the Puppet RAL doesn't know how to unpack sensitive data types.
The current PSON catalog serialization format is restricted to basic JSON types. There's no readily available way to attach metadata to values in a JSON document or extend information on some object directly; the structure of the document itself must be changed to incorporate metadata. This means that in order to serialize this sensitive context for properties we need to include this on resources that have sensitive properties.
As an interim solution to this, we can add a per-resource field to contain this information; either an implementation specific sensitive key or a general metadata key that can include such information as sensitive. This information would be serialized for each resource when the catalog is serialized, would be transported within Puppet::Resource objects, and that information would be carried along when a Puppet::Resource object was converted to a Puppet::Type object.

In order to convey to the Puppet agent that certain resource properties may be sensitive, the Puppet DSL needs the concept of sensitive information. This is best represented as a wrapper data type that will initially mark the wrapped information as sensitive, and will ultimately guard the information from leaking out of the current context in plaintext.
This type needs to behave correctly when compiled and used in the same Ruby process via puppet apply. It also needs to be serializable in a manner that stores the wrapped value in the catalog in a backwards compatible manner while retaining the sensitive context in a manner that the agent can use.

When Puppet is applying resources during catalog application, it logs a large amount of information about how the system was changed, what the original state of the resource was, and what it was changed to. This is valuable for helping users understand what changes Puppet is enforcing and why those changes were made, but this is problematic when sensitive information is added to the mix. Puppet doesn't yet have a concept of sensitive information so all resource changes are logged regardless of whether the logged information needs to be protected or redacted.
In order to mitigate the exposure of sensitive information that Puppet is already managing, we need to build a concept of sensitive information and use this new information to redact sensitive information wherever possible. Our initial focus will be on the events that Puppet generates when synchronizing resources properties with sensitive information. Redacting these events will cut out sensitive information in the majority (but not necessarily all) of the Puppet runtime logs as well as the transaction report.

The naming and description of that parameter is horrible, eg. DOCUMENT-356. But yes you're absolutely right, auth_membership => true will remove any current member that isn't specified in the manifest. If false it will only add members to the group.
I agree the bug is as you say.

Ok, I had no idea group even had an auth_membership attribute. I've never set it before.
If I add auth_membership => true to a group resource, it clears unwanted members correctly.
So the bug, I guess?, is that without auth_membership there's a spurious notice of an attempted change.

Following up that patching the stock pkg provider to include install_options doesn't appear very difficult. I just added this to a custom module and set the 'provider' attribute on package resources to point to it instead of pkg. Now, invocation like the following works as expected:

package { 'openssl':

  ensure => latest,

  provider => 'custom_pkg',

  install_options => ['--no-backup-be', '--deny-new-be'].

}

Here is the diff against stock pkg provider:

Jira (PUP-5287) install_options capability on Solaris provider "sun" & "pkg" - clone

  Re: install_options capability on Solaris provider "sun" & "pkg" - clone

Following up here that the word 'option' no longer appears in the current version of the SunOS/Solaris pkg provider, and puppet agent now states install_options is not supported at all:

Debug: /Package[openssl]: Provider pkg does not support features install_options; not managing attribute install_options

At lease for my case, the desired use case for install_options would be to invoke options like '-

no-backup-be' and '
-deny-new-be.' That is, it would very handy to disable pkg tool's behavior of quietly creating and activating new boot environments for certain packages, causing any subsequent filesystem changes to become orphaned on next reboot.

Jürgen Thomann oh, I didn't realize we shipped our default auth.conf in a way where that was disabled. Not sure if we did that intentionally.
No way to trigger that action w/o hitting the HTTP endpoint, unfortunately.

Also relates to MODULES-3275 - the Chocolatey test suite is currently performing some Unicode related workarounds by using chcp 65001 prior to running commands that depend on Unicode. That tech debt should be cleaned up once this ticket is addressed.

Chris Price Sadly I don't have the admin api enabled... I have a heap dump from monday with around 1GB and heap is set to -Xmx7500m. What is the best way to provide you with the heap? I have a server where I can put it but I wouldn't put a link to it here for the world to download. Email address would be fine.
I will restart my puppet server with the change tomorrow to get it enabled and hope that it will somehow happen again...
