When those values are strings they are automatically subject to interpolation using the existing hiera style. This will continue to work for the data returned by the data_hash function. There is the need to turn off interpolation for certain keys because it is very painful to escape strings that need to have hiera interpolation look alike content (this is not uncommon). To support this without requiring the user to switch to key_lookup style (where interpolation is done by the function) there should be a lookup_option controlling if a value should be used verbatim. Note that it is the data provider function kind / and its configuration that determines hw values are interpolation (the syntax for interpolation etc.) and the lookup option can override that such interpolation takes place. The verbatim option cannot be used to turn off any interpolation performed by the function itself. Add Comment

All hiera_xxx functions should be deprecated under the control of {{\--strict}} where for puppet 4.8.0 both strict=error and strict=warning should issue a deprecation warning (not error).This may change to an error in a later release.The deprecation should state that the lookup function should be used instead with a suitable example per hiera function, or offer a link to documentation/ticket ([~nick.fagerlund] what is the recommended way of doing this now - still the google links?).

I don't think it quite works that way anymore. AFAIK, everything goes through Puppet lookup, which delegates to Hiera for the first (global) layer of lookups. Should we remove this setting? Should we replace it with something else? UPDATEThe data_binding_terminus setting should be deprecated as the goal is to have not singleton/global data configured. It should all be defined per environment and use lookup.To not drive people crazy the deprecation should use the {{\--strict}} option to issue a deprecation warning in Puppet 4.8.0 at warning level for both strict=error and strict=warning. We do not want to make it an error quite yet as it requires having switched to lookup in all used environments.

Therefore puppet will run dnf install -y which fails to update an already installed package when there is a new version available. Is this already fixed? This got me wondering how local variables are generated from parameters and specifically how this intertwines with meta parameters. I was able to follow a path in the Puppet source that seemed to validate that all parameters of a resource are added to parameter scope[2] and that parameter scope will eventually make it into local scope by virtual of traveling through ephemeral scope[3]. Combine this with the specification that meta parameters are available in parameter scope[4] and it seems that you have an implicit behavior that one should expect that all meta parameters and their values are available in local scope.
