I was surprised there's currently no way to specify a directory and/or includes. I'm just getting restarted with Puppet and am new to Hiera, but I can foresee some data files, such as 'common.yaml', becoming fairly large and unwieldy. I'd really like to isolate the settings for each module/service/etc. to its own file. Currently, it's not possible to query for a subhash in a structured fact value. For example given a fact and a value of: hashfact = { 'hash1': { 'subkey': 'value' }
}, it's not possible to write a query that isolates and returns just the value of 'hash1'.

I believe that you can now achieve removals by using a lookup_options, and an array merge with knockout, but I have not tried. It will require changes that may be unacceptable. Earlier, if you wanted to be able to set an undef value - the only way was to use something like $x = undef, and then bind nil in hiera data, or give as an undef value in a resource _expression_. That was deemed problematic because of its inconsistency (as you say, it is more correct now). The real culprit in this mix is the fact that puppet treats a given undef as "use the default" and there is nothing we can do about that. The new behavior in pupet 4.9.0 (hiera 5/lookup) behaves as hiera 3.2.1, so the chance of this being changed (again) is close to none. I am therefore Closing this ticket as "Won't Do". If your use case is one that requires some other (new) mechanism to override data with "antimatter" and this cannot be achieved some other way, then I think we are more willing to add that instead of changing the meaning of undef/nil in hiera data. `puppet lookup` subcommand can't take multiple keys as arguments
While it is tempting to just change the documentation I think it is convenient to be able to look up more than one value at the time.

If that group name was the same as a built-in group, all the built-in facts in that group would get cached along with the custom fact. If it was unique, only the custom fact(s) with that group would be cached. In older versions of Hiera you could use a nil in the backend to force the Hiera default to be selected.For example, given the simple Hierarchy:{code}---:hierarchy: - 'data/host' - 'data/common'{code}And data/common with:{{my_var: 'global val'}}You could use in data/host :{{my_var: ~}}And Hiera would return the specified default value back to Puppet. This would allow the intentional "unsetting" of a particular key in Hiera for a small set of hosts that otherwise received more global Hiera-based settings.This used to work in Hiera and was usable from Puppet with {{hiera('my_key', 'a default')}}Now, Hiera (arguably more correctly) returns the found value nil, but Puppet doesn't fall back to the default, it instead raises an error and aborts the catalog compilation.This breaks a small but important bit of flexibility in Hiera.

I'd typically think we shouldn't acceptance test this at all, it's a deprecated feature, but this is more about migration and upgrades, so maybe it deserves a bit of coverage. thoughts? also, can one put a v3 config file in an environment/module and use it? or is v3 only supported/deprecated for global lookups? On some people's systems, some of the built-in facts are quite slow, and caching them was straightforward, which is why we started there. One part of this that is particularly troublesome is that the "expired certificate" message is logged at info warning — which won't appear by default in daemon output.
