I found a problem with this approach as well. Suppose if we create public and private keys using Exec resource in puppet.
mi.pub will be available only after the Exec resource is applied on the agent. and mi.pub can be generated any where in the file system of the agent. so the resources will be as below.
Exec {'create ssh keys': --- }
->
ssh_authorized_key {'mi': user => 'root', pubkey => file('local path to pub file') }
If we have a structure like this, but file or inline_template are the parser functions which are evaluated during compilation phase. but during that phase, the pub key is not generated as Exec resources is not applied on the agent during that time.
We have solved this issue by writing custom providers which will serve our purpose.

331778e from PUP-6980 caused hiere hiera to call YAML.load_file('/dev/null') in some situations, which returns `false`, instead of a hash, leading to failures. This e.g. breaks rspec-puppet's setup shenanigans: https://github.com/rodjek/rspec-puppet/issues/434That link also has a stack-trace and travis log showing the problem.

With the introduction of "rich data in catalog" we can instead leave it up to a user to either include a String (which is always UTF-8), or to include a Binary ( PUP-5831 ) and simply send either a String or a Binary in the catalog. That is currently possible by turning on the experimental feature --rich_data on both master and agent. Rich data is however not fully support throughout the eko system (no support in PDB) and the opt in is not easy to use since it requires both agent and server side opt in and cannot be controlled per env. I would much rather finish the support for Rich Data than trying to shoehorn only support secret file content. Removing this from the 5.0.0 release. The original code lives at https://github.com/puppetlabs/puppet/blob/master/lib/puppet/util/windows/file.rb#L51-L69 Note that the current code calls ReplaceFile and specifies REPLACEFILE_WRITE_THROUGH (0x01) as the dwReplaceFlags despite MSDN documentation listing that value as unsupported. The original code dates back to 2012 and probably wasn't sufficiently tested in UNC path scenarios -

A regression introduced in Puppet 4.8.0 caused an attempt to lookup a string containing more than one interpolation that in turn used interpolation function hiera (e.g. %{hiera('some_key')} ) to failed fail when running with trace level set to debug. This regression is now fixed.
