That behaviour renders a path useless, but nevertheless, existing. An option would perhaps be to actually do skip hierarchy entries that contains unresolvable interpolation expressions and print warnings to that respect instead. I think we already have a ticket for the problem you describe. It looks like a merge of arrays is trying to join values (using the unpack_arrays) and one of those values is the boolean true. My guess is that this stems from PUP-7286. What happens is a merge of an array at top level. Hiera 3 would only merge arrays found in hashes. This difference, in combination with your setting unpack_arrays and a literal boolean value, gives you the error above. The deprecation warnings that you get are not the cause of your problems. They are there to inform you that Puppet is planning to remove something in the future. The actual removal will not happen until there is a switch of major version (i.e. Puppet 5 or 6). Not having a fact and having hiera skip that entry is expected behaviour imho and should not change with strict. The "Path" in the explain output should always show a resolved entry. Alex P, as a workaround, could you try and use the Version 3 hiera instead (set your hiera_config to point to the version 3 file)? That way, thing should at least work as before. Henrik Lindberg well, again, as per the documentation, wasn't sure what values the defaults should have: whether it's type or reference to a folder, etc.
defaults — Optional. If the defaults entry is omitted, it does not force each hierarchy level to specify every key; instead, the following defaults take effect for levels that omit keys: datadir: data and data_hash: yaml_data

Sorry. We couldn’t fix some of Hiera’s limitations without a new format, but we couldn’t change classic Hiera’s config format in a minor Puppet agent release, so you’ll be using two different formats for a while.?? Not sure whether per default deb package, Puppetlabs documentation or someone else's blog/post, but it had been two hiera files configured on our system since the initial configuration. It was working. It did stopped after the upgrade with one error; after changing to Hiera v5, receiving the above-mentioned error. Also, the 'classes' lookup that fails, what data file/files contains that key? Another thing that seems wrong here is that you have both a global hiera.yaml version 3 (in /etc/puppetlabs/puppet/hiera.yaml) and a global hiera.yaml version 5 (in /etc/puppetlabs/code/hiera.yaml). Only one of them will be used. Unless you have a custom hiera_config setting, it will be the former. Perhaps you wanted to show that you tested each to no avail? In any case, it's not clear from the description. If I read your hiera.yaml correctly you now seem to specify data. You can try the puppet lookup CLI with --explain to see an explanation of how lookup/hiera arrives at the result of looking up a value. You can try that for "classes" for the node in question - my guess is that you would see paths to non existing files and a result of "not found". Thomas Hallgren As far as spec times; I'm noticing an increase in rspec-puppet (spec/classes) tests, but just in pe_infrastructure, and it's actually only about a 2x increase. I've tried running specs in pe_install and puppet_enterprise (which both depend on pe_infrastructure's Config library), and I don't see a significant difference in time running the rspec-puppet tests in those suites when including pe_infrastructure#next versus pe_infrastructure#issue/pe-18334/switch-meep-to-lookup branch. So it may not be significant.
